On the streets of York there are actually many homeless people. I took this last weekend. The weather then was sunny but cold. Today in York I know it is freezing and has been snowing. This is the time to really spare a thought for those who are homeless. Hopefully they will keep each other warm
They say everyone is only one step away from being in that position. There but for the grace of God go I
Sobering. I took a shot of a man just lying on the pavement in Winchester once - maybe it was an act to get funds - but still very sad. I gave him a note which would not go far.
A super street shot! You have to remember though that there are two types of homeless in York - there are some genuine needy homeless, but there are also a number of professional beggars, and it can be hard at times to distinguish between them. There was at one time a busker with an autoharp who commuted to York by train because there were richer pickings here than where he normally lived. He was obviously well known to the station staff, since they would meet his train and help him get his gear off the train!
@fishers The same here in Crawley Ian but I know the genuine ones. I once bought a cup of tea and sandwich to one man and he told me he didn’t want it he just wanted money!
I also know that some of them spend it on drink or drugs …… who knows what we would do eh? Thank you for your comments Ian, always appreciated.

No, I rarely do for street photography . Most people don’t notice but if they do I show them and explain what I am doing it for. Most people are fine with it but I will delete it if they are unhappy.
It is perfectly legal to photograph people and things outside without their permission .
Just go for it the more you do the easier it gets.
I did actually ask permission to take that shot as the man was looking directly at me - and I like to treat everyone with respect as I am sure you do too.
It’s hard to know the genuine ones from the imposters. I one offered a sandwich to a gut in Manchester & he said thank you but he wasn’t hungry. I spent a good ten minutes talking to a really genuine homeless man in Blackpool recently & I think of him in weather like this…. Good he’s got his dog fir company, the worst must be the loneliness! Lovely capture of this all to often sight.
A sad photo and lots of interesting comments. I have bought a meal and coffee for homeless people but I wouldn't give them money because having worked with drug and alcohol counselling for years invariably they will only spend the money on their addiction. They aren't bad people, just people in a bad situation.
