I'm Back by digitalrn

I'm Back

Well its been a long few days, and I finally have my new computer up and running, but I am far from comfortable with it. This new model came equipped with Windows 8, and wow, is that something to get used to. I was able to finally transfer some photos onto the computer, but then I lost them, and had to look all over the place to find out where they were saved. I'm going to go back to the store this weekend and get some Windows 8 training. In the transfer of all my information, I inadvertently lost all the writing I did on my family history. I still have the information, but as far as all the editing I did, and the layout, it is gone. Six months of work, wow, I about pulled my hair out, oh now wait, I don't have any hair left to pull out, thank goodness. Well I guess it could be worse. Anyway, I'm back.
I was going to say "HOORAY for a new computer!" but sounds like you have had a time of it! I am so sorry about your loss of data. That stinks. I have VISTA still and it crashes alot. But I am never sure if it is totally the Vista or that I have clogged my computer up with thousands of photos. That monitor is so amazing! I know you will like it once you get familiar with it all!

Welcome back , with a little practice you will learn to love your new computer :)

Awesome shot

I feel your frustration. Hang in there, Rick! It looks like a great set up!

Oh Rick that is devastating! But honestly I don't think your writing is lost, it's probably in there somewhere or still in what you were pulling it from. Ask the store people to help you recover it! There are programs that can do that. I hope things pick up for you as you get used to the new computer.

Congrats on the new computer! My husband just got a new laptop equipped with Windows 8 and he is NOT a fan. Good luck getting comfortable with it.

Sue
I'm not sure I like the windows 8 layout...sorry you lost all that work..good luck with the lessons Rick.

I am so far behind the times in technology. This looks great!

YAY to your being back. Not so good that you lost all your edited files. They tell me that they are "never really lost" and that a good technician can retrieve them. Perhaps there's someone at the store where you purchased this that does tech support? It would be worth it for the time you've taken with that project.

Wow, what a piece of crap for that to happen. This will make me backup photos and writings an extra time before any computer upgrade occurs. We all need to do more frequent backups, but to back up all of my photos onto an external HD, it takes over 3 hrs, so it does not occur as often as would be optimal: like weekly. Best wishes.

Rick, it should be there somewhere! We had the same problem and took the computer to the Apple computer shop and a guy there retrieved all the information for us!
March 5th, 2013
so sorry about the hair.......! ;) "New and improved" is so frustrating, isn't it? Good luck is learning it and working through it!!
March 5th, 2013
@olivetreeann Well actually everything was on my old computer that dies. I thought I saved it, but apparently I had to upload it to the site in order to have it saved, and I didn't.
March 5th, 2013
Ooh that makes me so nervous about changing my computer which I will need to do soon.....Windows 8 !!!!!!
March 5th, 2013
Is it a touch screen? Windows 8 is best for tablets I think, when you can just swipe the aps from one side to the other with your finger. You seem to be going through a bit of computer hell, Rick.
March 5th, 2013
Haha, Rick, love the joke about your hair. Hope you get everything settled in no time. The monitor looks sharp and clear. Good luck with the new equipment.

@sabresun I could have gotten touch screen, but I chose not to. I kept my old monitor, just bought the new tower, saved a bundle. I do not do well with computer problems. If I can't resolve them quickly, I soon lose my cool and want to take them out back and take the sledge hammer to them. In the past I've had two Gateways, a Dell which I did not like at all, and this time I bought an HP. Fell into a bargain too with the new printer, an Epson Artisan, wireless copier, scanner and fax, a one year old clearance model for $59. Couldn't pass it up. The whole new set up only cost me about $700 with a 2 year warranty and 24/7 support.

@digitalrn It sounds like you didn't get too bad a deal there, Rick. I think there is an option to make Windows 8 look like the regular desktop we all are familiar with from previous versions. You might try that if the format is a bit irritating to begin with.
March 5th, 2013
I do agree with Ann, there has to be a way to find it. we always go into the program and go back a few days and usually what we lose shows up again..if that doesn't helpI think someone in the the store or a computer expert should be able to find it for you. so glad you're back.

sorry about the frustration and loss of info. i'm not sure if/how it would work for a non-mac but with my mac computer i have a "time machine" external hard drive backup that updates automatically and continually. i can just plug in to a new computer [or my own computer that's just been fixed] and everything, including software, is set up exactly as it was. well worth the $100 or so for a terabyte drive. hope you get your computer things back to "normal" as painlessly as possible.

I'll bet there's a big learning curve before you get comfortable with it. Also, it just bit you in the butt. I'm sure you can find a knowledgeable computer geek and get it all back. It has to be there somewhere, right?
March 5th, 2013
@digitalrn I still think someone could retrieve that- several of my friends have children who have gone into computer forensics- and that's what they do.
March 5th, 2013
Great colours, really vibrant!
March 5th, 2013
Rick, please don't worry so much! Take the tower to the dealer and he will find your files in 2 seconds flat. Nothing is worth pulling your hair out (whether you have any or not). So now I've decided I don't like your picture today. Let's do tomorrow instead.
March 5th, 2013
Sorry to hear of your woes Rick! My computer works when it wants to. I really should invest in one of those external harddrives. Tech stuff is definitely not my thing. Wishing you good luck with the lessons.
March 6th, 2013
Great to see you back. Oh @*!**!! technology, put on this earth to drive us insane and it is doing a wonderful job!! Hang in there Rick you will adjust and I hope you recover all of your lost hard work.
March 6th, 2013
@carmichaelbev Thank you for your honesty Beverly, I didn't like it either. I quit. I am never coming back. I am gone forever. It's just not worth it! Ok I'm over it now.
March 6th, 2013
It's great to see that you are back online. I understand having computer problems. I lost tons of data years ago when I was working on my family history. I hope you the learning curve isn't long for you and you can master this new computer soon.
March 6th, 2013
Welcome back. Good to see it wasn't too bad, although losing that family history is rough.
March 6th, 2013
Good luck with your windows technology. I am a Mac person. Easier to understand for me. Sorry about all the work on your family history....
March 6th, 2013
Wow, I can see that being difficult to learn and get used to! How sad about losing the information though :(
