The cows were in the meadow across the roadway, and it's obvious here that they were all ready to return to their favorite grazing spot across the street. Here they are all gathered together waiting. They all make their way up that pathway to prepare for the crossing and then wait.
This sort of reminds me of people waiting in a lobby before the doors are opened to the theater! Great shot Rick and the b/w makes it even more perfect.
