Imagine shooting thousands of rolls of film over your lifetime yet not showing them to anyone, hardly printing them or even having the films developed. Why did she do it?
i studied her work a few classes ago.....such an amazing story. somewhere in there you'll find that she was once Phil Donahue's nanny, and his kids thought she was a weirdo, always taking pictures of trash and rubbish. I envision her as Mary Poppins with a Rolli. :)
@grecican he will love it, she captured so so many aspects of just general street scenes and life in New York. and you MUST read the story...especially the part about how these photos were found, and the man who made it his business to identify the photographer. :) it was a mystery!
By the way, what a job! The only thing that frustrated me about printing was the limitations of my own negatives. Imagine having something like this to work with, I'd have never seen the sun...
Wow, just looking over the self portraits...pretty amazing & inspiring! Completely fascinated that she just kept taking pictures and not even looking at them.
@grecican yeah inspirational and amazing stuff, actually stopped me watching Art Race for a short while! Remember @robinwarner running a artist theme on her last year. Thanks for the links Dieter
These days you just expect to see someone walking around the streets with a camera of some sort in their hands, snapping pictures, but in those days it wouldn't have been so and especially a woman...!
These are really beautiful and each one tells a story:)

I love her story and her work is phenomenal. I was lucky enough to see the first gallery display of her work and some of her stuff in Chicago last year. It was amazing.

Thank you for sharing!
I love the work, and also the story of her sheltered life. Thanks for bringing it to the Community's attention. I bookmarked it months ago.
