Photo project about domestic violence

May 1st, 2014
I just read an article about the winner of the Sony world photography awards - she wanted to shoot a series about ex-prisoners and ended up witnessing and documenting domestic violence. Very, very disturbing but I thought I'd share it anyway to see what you think about it.
The article is in German - http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/gesellschaft/fotografin-sara-naomi-lewkowicz-dokumentiert-haeusliche-gewalt-a-923944.html

But here is the series on the photographer's website - http://saranaomiphoto.com/Shane-and-Maggie/1/

PS: This is seriously strong stuff - not for children and not for the faint-hearted.

Very strong stuff indeed. The image with the tiny little girl trying to get between her parents is the most heart-breaking of all to me.

Wow, very powerful. I wish I could read the article. The one in the kitchen with the naked child was very strong. Thanks for sharing.

I saw the one of the child running to its mothers defence in the Sunday Times Spectrum shots. I could not believe that people would do this in front of someone, or that someone would stand and capture this, especially where children are involved.

sad especially since statistically she'll never leave him and the kids are going to repeat the cycle

Very disturbing pictures and article. unfortunately the fellow will get out of prison again and if it's not her, someone else will get hurt again.

@callymazoo @bruni : In the article it says that the mother left the guy and went back to her ex in Alaska (far away from that guy who hit her) so she and the children might be safe. But who knows who will be thte next victim, you're right.

Very evocative & moving, strong & effective. Domestic violence is such a tragic thing, it leaves such scars to the victim and to the children involved. I do some volunteer work working on this subject, so I know that these things are never easy and that b/w as they seam to be looking from outside alone, itĀ“s easy to look at this as a outsider and think that she should just leave -she should, I agree - but from her point of view thereĀ“s so much more things involved there than just the violence, thereĀ“s still feelings involved, fear, financial mathers, self esteem, lack empowerment, lack of strenght, shame etc and the decision about leaving always have to be her own decision.

You can use the google tool bar to automatically translate foreign languages into English.
Works pretty well.
