Model Release

November 18th, 2010
Someone asked me for what I use as a model release... this is what is printed on the back of my business card... not iron clad... but better than nothing.

It is VERY pro photog... use only for good and NEVER for evil!

Model Release
For valuable consideration received, I hereby grant to JORDAN ANDERSON
(“photographer”), and his legal representatives and assigns, the
irrevocable and unrestricted right to use and publish photographs of
me, or in which I may be included, for editorial trade, advertising,
and any other purpose and in any manner and medium; and to alter the
same without restriction. I hereby release photographer and his legal
representatives and assigns from all claims and liability relating to
said photographs.

Mine's very similar, but I'd never thought to put it on the back of a business card! That is pure awesome! I think I'll be getting some new business cards soon. :)

@icywarm Is something like that necessary for shots posted here, or just for shots that might be sold? Also, do you know how rigorous it has to be?
Just for an example, would this shot need a release:

@samuel find someone with 5 years law schooling, 20 years experience in copyright and privacy law and multiply by a million lawyers and you will still not have a final answer to that for each country...

generally if it is in public and you are not making money the worst they can due is threaten legal... even with children... That's right...

I could pull up to a public park with a giant lens and camera and take all the kiddie photos I want and post them all over the internet and there is really nothing that could be done....

but then the social contract kicks in... why would you want to? Look at what the press is allowed to do and well mostly not illegal it is kinda seedy (not legit press, more the pops)

Now a Site like this could have a policy that says it will not publish anything without consent and that would make it offside on the site policy.

Even if you take something illegal... and you sell it for profit... the legal action would be against the publisher and not the photog...

let the can of worms begin :)

Great info Jordan! Thanks! What site do you use to share the photos where you can create a separate p/w for each person? Love the idea of using their email and phone number, easy for them to remember!

picasa's web albums will do it...(no password but you can set so they need to log in with their email addie), and you can mange it from your PC... I am using it right now with blogger for http://www.icywarm.com

i log them in with a their email account and set it to their phone number, unless they are fairly tech savvy and they can do it themselves..

but I will be using

Smug mug pro does it... and does it better... but costs $20/month or $160 per year... there is some cash...

are two easy to use ones... message me if you need help with either...

@icywarm Thanks for your help. I was mainly thinking about public settings where its not possible to get release from everyone, or reenactments, etc. where I might have a dozen people in one shot, so that pretty much answers my question.
