Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS

Hey All,

I was just wondering if anyone owns this lens. I have an opportunity to buy this lens second hand for $400 cash with a canon lens hood and Hoya filter.

I do know this is a great deal just by looking at the overall price. Does anyone have any experience with this lens?

I have it! It's my zoom. I bought it two years ago new for $150. I used it for most of the shots of my kids and many nature shots. I love it, although I know it's a cheaper one.

i thought it was $800?

I have this lens, I have been having a lot of fun with it. I don't think I spent more than $400 on it new on Amazon, but I didn't get the hood and the filter w/it so it sounds like a good deal. I find myself using it more often than I thought I would, I initially bought it to take bright day action sports shots (which it worked great for) but I find myself grabbing it for just about anything.

That's quite high priced. Maybe compare it with ebay or amazon first. Someone here was selling a second hand 70-300mm for just 100 euros but was purchased 3 years ago, I still didn't buy, because in the Philippines, a new one is just 100 euros or 130 USD. I don't know, but that is still high priced. Don't take my advice seriously though, as you maybe talking about a different lens. Good luck! :)

Shop around for sure! It is not a fast lens, so you won't be able to shoot low light with it. If it's close to what a new one is, I'd go for the new one to have the warranty.

As to the lower prices quoted by some here, they may be referring to the NON IS (Image Stabilization) version. Amazon US is offering the IS version for $495. The lens hood comes with. The image stabilized version is well worth the price difference, in my opinion.

I started a thread about this exact lens the other day. It's on amazon for £145.

@lluniau That would be the non IS version. The IS version is about 2.5 times that.

@lluniau That is the 55-250 not the 70-300. Not stating either us better or worse, just different.

@lilbudhha o, ye. Sorry!

I have the 55-250IS and the 70-300 (non-IS). The Image Stabilization is great especially if your shooting in lower light (indoors, evening lighting, etc). Personally, I am shocked at how LITTLE difference there really was between a photo at 250mm and one at 300mm. If I'm taking a photo of the moon, I use my 70-300 on a tripod. Anything else, I use my 55-250IS.

I know this isn't the lens you were asking about, but point being that the 'IS' is worth the money for a telephoto lens and the 55-250IS is a good/cheaper alternative.
