Brand new to photography, need followers and feedback!

January 12th, 2013
Hi all, my name is Rachael and I have recently bought a Canon 600D - mainly for capturing my two sons' early years.

Anyway I was suggested to join this site and so far I'm really enjoying it :) I could really use tips and tricks and helpful/constructive feedback on my photos though, I would love to get the hang of my camera (honestly I haven't even figured out the manual settings on it yet, or what each aspect controls in a picture) and the only way I will do that is practice practice practice!

I would really enjoy meeting some of you, following some of your journeys with your 365 projects and learning some things along the way :)

Hi Rachael - I'm new to this too - have been taking photos on Auto forever but felt a bit jaded that the camera was doing all the work! So now I'm happily experimenting with my manual settings. I'm really enjoying the site too - so much diversity and imagination.

One tip to get the really nice shallow depth of field with the background nice and soft is to zoom your lens right in to 55. Im assuming you have the standard 18-55 lens that comes with it...also using small f numbers. Try shooting in av mode, but...the more you zoom the more compression between the foreground and background so it enhances that effects . Also the more zoomed in you are, on that lens, the more flattering it is for portraits. Hope that is of some use....

Sorry I dont know if thats too simplified or not. Im not sure whre you are at and what you have tried.

welcome Rachael... all of us have started with that first step.. I just completed my first year. People are very encouraging on this site. When I started I viewed other people's photos, I commented of what I liked about it, I looked through the new faces tag to meet new friends and joined the themes and challenges. the most important thing is to have fun with it.

Hi Rachael, I too am pretty new to this or at least certainly this project. I love taking photos but have an awful lot to learn just like yourself. Bought myself the Dummies guide to my camera and have decided that each day I must read a bit from it. It was recommended to me and perhaps worth getting. I have started following you and perhaps you would like to do the same with me and we can maybe help each other.

Good luck and have fun

Two other places to go for some of the best photos on the site - "Post your own Fav and why for the week of..." and "Post your favorite fav of someone else for the week of..." Both of these sites are continuing, and you can find links in Discussions, or to the right of your home.

Look and see what you like, click on them and you get to the person's project. Check out a few of their recent postings and see if you consistently like them, and then you follow them. Then, especially, COMMENT back with a nice short sentence. Don't be stingy with the "fav " either if you really like a shot. Also, people really love getting asked about stuff, so never hesitate to ask the hows of what people did. "Scratch my back, and I will scratch yours" works here especially.

@ayrinthelife If you would like me to impartially critique your stuff, share my views on what is great and what is just mediocre, and suggest a few things, perhaps one a week, I would be more than happy to do that. Just reply back. I hope I can be constructive. I am new enough at this so I know your anxiety, but I have learned so much in the past few months, perhaps I can help you out. Good shooting.
