Help with variation!

January 5th, 2011
Ok, I'm only on my fourth day, but 3/4 of my pictures are like macro and I only have one portrait! It's just that I don't go very many places since I can't drive myself, and besides, where I live isn't very interesting..can anyone help me with getting some new ideas?! I mean, I've got ideas but I can just never get them to come out right! And how do I get good lighting without a studio or any special flashes or anything?

Hi Sarah, I'm new as well and I am finding myself in the same predicament. Although, i do live in a beautiful place, so i can't complain about that. I'm defnitely looking out for any good advice from the more knowledgeable three-six-fivers.

Thanks for posting!

For inspiration, the weekly theme or www.dailyshoot.com are a good help. For lighting, depending on what you want to do, but I use most of the time a simple desk lamp, that you can direct where you want (you know, like the Pixar lamp). Natural light is always good to.

First of all, I'd say don't stress out over it. I saw a link on here one time about someone who shot the same tree every day- sometimes at different times of the day, or from a different angle. Each photo was more beautiful than the one before, and each one very different. Shoot what inspires you that day and don't worry about it. Both of you @angievega and @sarahbear9995 already have some fantastic photos posted. Keep reading the threads on here, including one on here now titled "fun 365 theme"- people are continuously posting wonderful ideas on there. Good Luck to both of you, you're off to a great start!

I must not have read that we had to vary our shots.. lol thought it was up to the individual.
I checked out the http://www.dailyshoot.com/
gives you a theme to look at which helps when shooting, which you could accomplish around the home. Thanks for the link Cynthia.

The nice thing about this project is that it gives you a constraint, one picture a day. But at the same time it gives you 365 tries. Give yourself permission to have some bad shots. Sometimes you just have to get through the bad or medoicre, in order to excel.

And by the way I agree with Terri you have nothing to be worried about. I love your macro shots and am also happy to see you doing portraits. You, like a lot of artists, probably just have high standards. Getting frustrated shows that you care and want to do well.

Just keep going. By the way there is a great book called Art and Fear. Helped me a lot. If you are interested look it up. Small, quick read, very supportive.

I'm anbit macro focused, too! I just want each pic to reflect something meaningful on the day it was taken. If they're all close shots for a while I'm sure they'll vary eventually...I'm using the project as a journal of sorts for the year? Your shots are lovely!

you could still go on with macro but try to shoot them from different angles and experiment with lighting :)
