Which is best?

May 21st, 2011
I've got a long way to go, but I'm thinking of sending one of the following two photos to a local competition. Since it was pointed out to me that the lighthouse is not quite vertical my eye kept being drawn to it and I've straightened the original version, so ignore that particular fault!

I'd appreciate feedback, criticism, and which of the two you think is best. Thanks!

@lluniau i really like the first one. all of the shades of grey seem to work, and I love the reflections of the clouds.

I can't decide.....well....I don't know, maybe the first one. They are both rad.

The first one. I love the tones and the perspective. They are both lovely though!

Definitely the first one, much more interesting and the reflections are great

I love the castle, but I think the lighthouse makes for a more dramatic shot. The reflections through the water are wonderful and the whole scene is beautifully balanced. In the castle one, I'd be tempted to crop away some of the green at the front to place more emphasis on the castle... but that's just me...we have nothing so stunning and dramatic here to photograph - I'm very jealous!

Love the lighthouse! The reflections are awesome.

definitely the first one

I'm all about the castle! Both of these are pretty awesome.

I like the castle. The contrast between the sunny yellows and the neutral grays of the castle make it interesting. Also, I love the sky!

I'm a big fan of using negative space, so I vote number one.

The first one. I love the grey moody sky reflected into the almost perfectly still water. The white lighthouse really stands out against the dark sky and water. And I really like the little splashes of bright color in the background.

First one keeps me looking much longer. Beautiful space countering the vertical.

The first one, reflections and colourings are great.

First one! ... and good luck!

Yup, the first one! Love the second, also, but my eye keeps getting drawn to that dark weed, or whatever it is, on the left. Clone that out, maybe?? Both shots are fantastic!

Definitely the first one-very moody.

I had to undo the processing to straighten up the lighthouse and have struggled a little to get it back the way it was. Any further criticism or suggestions for version 2 ( http://365project.org/lluniau/mwy-more/2011-05-22) would be very gratefully received!

Thanks again, Elin

I prefer version 2 - besides the lighthouse now being straight, the picture is also brighter.

@lluniau Version 2 is better than version 1...who would've thought it would be possible! In your version 2 of the lighthouse, there's a source of light making the whole picture brighter and crisper. Definitely like it better! Good luck in your competition. :-D

Hard decision. But I think the photo of the lighthouse is more atmospheric. The one of the building is brilliant and beautiful, but I see those photos all the time. My only thoughts when I see it are "pretty. wish I was there." So my vote is with the first one of the lighthouse, because I feel like I'm already there! great work! :)
