The Critique Game 7-28

July 28th, 2011
The aim of this is to boost 365'ers confidence but it also helps them improve. You look at the project of the person that posts last on this discussion and look at their most recent photo in their 365 account. Post it here (copy and paste the link from the "share" box on the right) and write one thing you LIKE about the photo, and one piece of CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM (how the photo can be improved).

I started with the last person who had participated on the last discussion.

It has been a month since it was last started, and I wanted to try it out again.
July 28th, 2011
@jameshayward
I like the intensity of the eyes, the choice of black and white makes the photo all the more striking.
I am not a huge fan of the processing that makes the facial features look a bit too pixelated and a tad dirty. I recently did that in one of my photos and am still not happy with that.

July 28th, 2011
@brumbe like the selective color choice on this shot...maybe if the selection would have been the whole truck
July 28th, 2011

@angievega

Love the focus and black & white for this shot

however it might have been better with a wider crop so its petals are all in the shot
July 28th, 2011
@angievega Wow...this is a really great photo. I don't know how to make it better...maybe if the front white part of the flower was more in focus, too, but really it's just beautiful.

July 28th, 2011
@An-G

This is a beautiful picture, I really love the soft focus and depth in it. It's wonderful. One piece of constructive criticism might be to try dimming the highlights some? The white middle of the flower is a bit overpowering perhaps.
July 28th, 2011
@thebraedenjones Great capture... maybe a wider focus to determine the true subject.
July 28th, 2011
@terek55 we just had three angie reviews, would you mind reviewing Mary Thorpe
@thebraedenjones would you mind reviewing Terry Beige.

The next new person reviews Braeden
July 28th, 2011
@brumbe i just got lucky...thanks everyone for your great feedback :))))
@mjkthorpe @terek55 @thebraedenjones
July 28th, 2011
Maybe I'll put tomorrow's up for review, cause I love the critique game, but I only posted today's shot for sentimental reasons, I know all the technical issues with it, lol
July 28th, 2011
@paulremulla this is really a stellar photo, all I can come up with is to adjust it so the building on the right is more defined. I really like it the way it is though too.

July 28th, 2011
@shadesofgrey Thank you, Shades of Grey =)
July 28th, 2011
@shadesofgrey I love the cross process. It's probably my favorite processing tool. The composition is great, and this is an awesome clone photo. I have no idea really what my criticism would be. The only thing that I initially thought was I wished the clones weren't so dark. But overall, this is a great photo!

July 28th, 2011

fab picture, really hard to find much to critique, for me the only thuing i would change would be to have moved forward a bit so that the bit of bridge framing the foreground isn't there as it sorts of blocks my eye from following the tracks
July 28th, 2011
@sallycheese

Love the processing, fun, and almost edible colours ;)
I find the leaf in front of the wheel a little disturbing. The wheel is such a beautiful shape and your pic is so graphic - it just jars. Otherwise a cool entry for the theme!

July 28th, 2011
@eliserose781 thank you. I wanted the clones lighter but I liked the way the sky looked. I realized after I posted it that I probably could have masked them and made them brighter while leaving the sky and rocks cross-processed. Ah well, maybe next time!
July 28th, 2011

@thebluegnu
i love the angle of this shot and his face is so cute! Only thing i guess i would change if i had to nitpick would be make the background slightly brighter. Other than that its a fab picture
July 28th, 2011

Cute capture. I love the compostition and the feeling of fun, but its blurry. I think if you set you ISO higher you could get a faster shutter speed and have a better chance at a clearer shot. @cariadon
July 28th, 2011
@mjmama

I like the edit with the chakra lights over the body, I think if I was going to change anything it would be to crop closer to the portrait and have less pattern on the fabric :D
July 29th, 2011

Carly- you are a very fine photographer! And there is really not much I could say to improve this picture. I think as far as composition goes, you did well with your subject. The lighting is fine and the processing works well for the subject. So my "criticism" is not really aimed at the picture. It's really more my personal taste. I think the flower would have been just as lovely "au naturale". I think it's a Rose of Sharon, but I can't be absolutely sure. Anyway, you are welcome to disregard that critique because it really has nothing to do with your picture! And a word to the one who critiques mine- today's picture was not one of my best!!
July 29th, 2011
@olivetreeann I like it alot! ~ I think you did great. ~ What would I change not a thing! ~ But I'm not an expert and this is my first critique!~ Sorry!

July 29th, 2011
@sanera This is a lovely shot and you've got great focus on the single water droplet. The background is a bit busy so would probably try and crop some out and get it a bit more blurred by using a shallower DOF

July 29th, 2011
@pennymilner~ Thanks~ I will figure out how to do that!
July 29th, 2011
I love the purple hues in this shot, so so pretty! I can't think of too much to change in this shot, possibly add another element of interest such as a bird or the moon peeking out. Well done!

July 29th, 2011
@mariboo This is my first critique...it seems a little too washed out (could just be my monitor, too) but I love everything else about it :)

July 29th, 2011
@sanera Thanks Samantha- you're too kind! My own personal critique would be that it was a sharper image- but that's just me! I appreciate the critique! I like your picture too!
July 29th, 2011
@kynosmom
Very difficult photo to critique. Maybe the stem could have been a bit sharper; that is really stretching though. Great color and focus. Awesome depth of field.
July 29th, 2011
@musicguy1982
my only real critique for this, is that the focus is suposed to be on the animals, but with the lighting it's hard to see and focus on them. it's overall a really great picture though!
July 29th, 2011
@lilkitty90
Great dof, lighting and bokeh...I just wish I knew what it was! I'm guessing it's a horse's back? It would be great just to see a bit more of it to be able to recognize what it is. Wonderful shot, though...hard to critique :)
July 29th, 2011
@tinatmmc I like this a lot . The choice of B&W is fabulous and I really like the simplicity of the shot. If I were to ask you to change anything it would be to change the crop ever so slightly to include a little more of the left hand chain and a little less grey space.

July 29th, 2011
@swilde

This was a REALLY good photo...i dint really know what should be changed. I think that you should add a better description of the photo so that the viewer would be able to know more about what the picture is. One thing i loved about this photo is the color. well done :)
July 29th, 2011
@nimi This is beautiful! I really would not change a thing. I love the vibrant colors and the way it fills the entire space. Great eye for such a young photographer! Nice!

July 29th, 2011
@irishmo awww, thanks so much Maureen!
July 29th, 2011
@irishmo I think that this is a creative theme shot and the title is sad but true! My critique would be that I would have liked it if you either had a different, more unique angle or maybe a closer crop.
July 29th, 2011
@egad Thank you e.gad! I edited this one rather quickly. I'm going to go back and try some of your suggestions! I appreciate the help.
July 29th, 2011
This is such a stunning idea! Constructive criticism is one of the kindest things that one person can do for another. To take the risk of criticism is itself huge. To offer an alternative is generous. If anyone would like to take a squizz at mine and offer comment, I would be most grateful. At the moment there are only nine to choose from as I am a 'new kid on the block'. Thanks in anticipation.
July 29th, 2011

Really love the angle and power of this shot, only thing I'd like to see is maybe in black and white?? Just a suggestion/ I'm by no means an expert:-)
July 29th, 2011
@rocket27 This is a good shot. The lighting is very well done!
The composition is good as well, and i like the Bokeh

One minor-ish thing i would say for shure (Lol pun) is that you probably should have focused on the text instead of the end of the mic. I think you would still get good focus on the end of the mic still by doing this (If not youd need to up the aperture a little)

July 29th, 2011
@3nder I love the photo. I love the bokey and the rain drop streaks down the window. I also love the composition on this. If I were to change one thing (and it was very hard to see anything I'd change) would me to maybe lighten the color and possibly warm the color just a hair. I think this would make the bug show up just a bit better and really make him "pop". Great shot and loved the caption with it....who hasn't had a bug in the car with them that's scared them.... :)
July 29th, 2011
Nic
@veronicab This is a great photo. I think the depth of field is perfect. And i like how the hair doesnt obscure the horses eye and mouth. I think the only comment i have is that maybe the photo could have been improved slightly if the angle that the photo was taken was adjusted slightly in order to get the front horse's ear under the barbed wire as well :-)

July 29th, 2011
I feel like i'm copping out when i say this, but it's really hard to find anything i would change. I love the color, focus etc.. Just for kicks, i downloaded it and cropped it in half from right to left, but didn't really like the outcome. it's a great capture.

July 29th, 2011
@jeffg
i absolutely ADORE this photo! it's great i love the composition and the focus, and the colors are beautiful. my only thing is that the peaking waves are little to bright because of the sun. fantastic photo!

July 29th, 2011
@lilkitty90 I really like this photo esp the sun rays and the droplets. Maybe play round with the depth of focus? Or add some contract between the horse's back and the droplets? I think this a little contract, the detail would really stand out.

July 29th, 2011
reply @mcdougall I love the perspective of this, I feel the shot could benefit from a better light source natural or other

July 29th, 2011
I love the composition, the levitation....umm, IDK, I guess I'd like to see the face a bit clearer or brighter?! awesome though.@griff
July 29th, 2011
@arrayofblues Laura, such a beautiful photo. I only would suggest a slight more color saturation? That's just preference though.

July 29th, 2011
@lilkitty90
thanks so much for the feedback.
July 29th, 2011
@karenkool This is a fun picture. I'm sure the missing lens is part of the inside joke. Great focus also. Your daughter in the background is a bit distracting with her hands over her face. Maybe next time ask her to do something silly or at least smile?
July 29th, 2011
@renelou Cute shot with great colors and texture. The only suggestion would be to take the shot with the boy not centered, but off to the side so we can see more of what's on the stage.
July 29th, 2011
@exposure4u - Wendy, I love this shot, such a cool spot! I love the color that just pops, and the sky is wonderful. I love how everything sucks your eyes into the middle of the shot (which is the pond, and your focus so it should) but then the cloud in the reflection pops your eye back up to the sky. so fun. Only thing I would say is maybe straighten the photo a bit, so the tree line is straighter and if it were me I would crop a llittle more of the bottom and left side out, but just a little. :)

July 29th, 2011
@bekahbell Thank you so much and especially for the critique! I so agree with you about the tree line and I'll have to try the crop on the left to see what happens. Thanks again, I sure appreciate the feedback!!
July 29th, 2011
@bekahbell Lovely shot. I really like the colour and the movement. It's also totally natural which I love. Two suggestions: either crop it differently so the building in the back right is less obvious or if it had been taken with a wider aperture the building would have been more blurred. I like the columns, just not the building!
July 29th, 2011
I love the tones of this shot, my critique qould to have got the picture straight using the railings as a guide

July 30th, 2011

@griff Very neat picture! I love the concept behind it, and think it was executed wonderfully. :) The only thing I'd really change is the color of the sky; it seems almost muddy, and I find it a little distracting.
July 30th, 2011

@jessicaelaine I really like this, how the main focus is the half made sock, and the black and white is cool too. The only thing I say is to add some more contrast, and give it a bit more depth. The string leading away from the sock too.. maybe if you took it out? I think it's a little bit distracting from the sock.
July 30th, 2011
@magicmaker

This is a really lovely picture - I think you summed it up perfectly in your description. I love the colours, and the way the boat seems to be pointing out into the sea. To improve it, it could be taken from a lower angle, which would make an oblique perspective and show more where the boat is going? x
July 30th, 2011
@nic365 Thanks for the critique, I appreciate the feedback! :) I'll keep that in mind next time!
July 30th, 2011
@izzymathie

I like the perspective. I think I would have shot the view with the toes forward, or edited out the slight blurry portion of breadcrumbs in the front.
July 30th, 2011
@tamalyn

Love the angle of the picture. Makes it feel like you're walking down against the wall. I would've stepped away just a tiny bit for the pic that way it would really feel like you're walking the direction of the pic is taken.
July 30th, 2011
Nic
@veronicab You're welcome! Although i really found it hard to find something to improve in your photo as it was such a great capture!
July 30th, 2011
Nic
@jeffg Thanks Jeff! I played around with this photo a lot before posting as the original definitely needed cropping!
July 30th, 2011
@babydoll

the angle of the light makes this an interesting shot, providing something of a "pointer" to your subject. the big block of concrete and dark area above it, however, diminish the importance of your subject in the shot. cropping it down to remove some of the "overhead" may make your subject stand out better.
July 30th, 2011
@arschmidt thanks...this was my first shot at editing a pic so I was trying to get the hang of it
July 30th, 2011
@arschmidt Interesting subject and I really like the detailing, and the contrasts of white against the darker green and the textures. The thing I might have had done different is the composition to make it a bit more "interesting" rather than putting the subject in the middle.
July 30th, 2011
@elke

This is a wonderful photo and you have spent a lot of time creating the final product. The only thing I would say is to have a little less snow or whiteness as it is slightly took stark but I am really picking because I think you have been very creative with this photo.
July 30th, 2011
@nicolecampbell What can I say! This is such a gorgeous shot and their faces are beautiful. You can see that they're having such a wonderful time. There's nothing really to dislike about it. Maybe having them as separate photos as they're both such stunning shots or possibly trying some selective colouring but they're only options for showing these photos in a different way :o)
July 30th, 2011
@nicolecampbell sorry! Forgot to post the pic...doh!

July 30th, 2011
@psychographer I love this shot and think the composition is lovely, the touch of purple does bring something to the pic. I agree with your own critique the spider does need to be a little clearer. Having taken one earlier in the week I know how difficult this can be. But still this is an awesome shot.

July 30th, 2011
@hagscat Thanks so much Carin. Unfortunately the light wasn't really good enough for a close up shot. It also looked better on the camera screen than when I uploaded but I'm describing this shot as 'soft focus' ;o) xx
July 30th, 2011
@psychographer - thanks Lisa. I couldn't decide between the two photos which is why I posted both of them. I would like to try selective colouring but have no idea how to do that :)
July 30th, 2011
@nicolecampbell Nicole, have you ever used Picnik? It's the only editing I use because it's so straightforward. My 17 year old describes it as photoshop for preschoolers ;o) It's online and free. If you'd like any help just let me know but tbh if I can use it anyone can. It's easy to work out just by playing around with it xx
July 30th, 2011
@psychographer - thanks Lisa, I did use Picnik for this photo but I must admit I haven't really explored everything it can do. I have used Befunky quite a lot because that is really easy to use. If I get stuck I will certainly call out for help :)
July 30th, 2011
@hagscat I like the different lines and colors, and something I would have done on this would have been to brighten it up or add contrast to make all the colors pop! Love this photo though!!
July 30th, 2011
@tigervolleyball Thank you I did try that but thought I was over doing it :-) but will go back and try again, I know less is more but sometimes more is really good!! :-))
July 30th, 2011
@tigervolleyball I love the way you caught the water and the story that implied even if you hadn't said anything about it. I find your watermark which is pretty in itself, kind of distracting in where it's placed. It looks to me as if it has the same importance as the photo. Nice job though - and especially in view of what you share about not having a lot of time to spend that day.

July 30th, 2011
@hagscat Yes that is true!! I still love the shot. :)
July 30th, 2011
@reba Yeah, i did think about that... Thank you!
July 30th, 2011
@reba I love the different colours in this picture and the composition, there is so much to see. However I am not a fan of frames so having a frame in the centre of the image, for me, is very distracting and takes my focus off of the image itself.

July 30th, 2011
@emmar84
this is my first time, so I hope this comes out right...
I love shots involving bugs feeding on flowers!! I love the color of the pretty purple prickly flower! The only thing I would suggest is trying for sharper focus on the bug... Still love this though!
July 31st, 2011
@sparrow1138

i really like the leading lines in this! It really draws your eyes to the girl. My only criticism is maybe having the picture cropped a little wider to show more of the water or have had the little girl looking at the camera.
July 31st, 2011
@emhoff

I'm a really big fan of vibrance, and I love the colors here. I also love the partial shot of the sunflower, it's large with out being over-bearing. I have to say, for some reason my favorite part of the photo is the focus in the background. Just the vaguest hint of a landscape and sky makes the whole thing pop to me.
July 31st, 2011
I got skipped :(
@sparrow1138 you were supposed to critique my latest. Not post your own photo. :)
July 31st, 2011
@wynndeaux why don't you try to focus the sunflower. she make me dizzy when i look at the her

July 31st, 2011
Seems like the sequence has gone a bit awry, with people posting their own pics instead of the previous poster's pic!

So, the latest of @tradawn9 who got skipped

I love the light glinting off the raindrops, and the sharpness of the focus. I do find myself wondering what the actual colour of the flowers is, so the sepia effect doesn't quite work for me :O)
July 31st, 2011
@sarahhorsfall
Thank you :) Yeah I think it was more of a cropping thing for me... When I did the original there was something missing in it for me so I played around with it, and ended up liking this one better... Here's the image it comes from: http://365project.org/tradawn9/365/2011-07-30
July 31st, 2011
@sarahhorsfall I love the Neutral coloring and the diagonal Lines in your photo the only thing i would do is maybe upp your aperture (lower the number) to make a better depth of field other than that i love this pic! :-)

July 31st, 2011
@cvanheel I'm confused - are you critiquing my latest photo, or the one you've posted here, which isn't by me?!
July 31st, 2011
@sarahhorsfall oh woops its the photo you posted which is tracys hahah I just woke up and not completely awake my bad :-P do you have one that you would like me to critique?
July 31st, 2011
@cvanheel The idea/instructions are that you critique and post my latest photo :o)
July 31st, 2011
@sarahhorsfall

great shot- love the selective colouring. maybe a closer focus on the canal boat would bring it out more
July 31st, 2011
@cvanheel

love the freezeframe action here brilliantly done- maybe follow the subject as your squeezing the shutter so to get the background as motion blur
July 31st, 2011
@mjkthorpe

love the clear eyes and the natural smile for this portrait, also really like it in B&W. I wish the top of her head was not cut off when cropped .
July 31st, 2011
@cvanheel Thank you :) I was at f/5.6...
August 1st, 2011
@cazink

This pic was wonderfully done! Wouldn't change a thing about it.
August 1st, 2011
@babydoll thanks so much :D
August 1st, 2011
@babydoll

I have never been to NY. Its cool to see some of the sights. I woiuld have tried to find a slightly higher vantage point so I could completely drop out the tourists on top... but since you are a trifle short, I can see why you didnt. :)
August 2nd, 2011
@tradawn9

gosh, I am such a newbie, sorry, I loved the texture and cropping, the only thing that I can think of changing is maybe playing with the contrast a wee bit.
sorry to mess up the thread
August 3rd, 2011
@sparrow1138

Love the perspective of the picture.
August 3rd, 2011
@babydoll

i love the frame up of this!

I think, maybe, the grey background on the right distracts from the photo a bit.
August 4th, 2011
@kiwi Thanks. I'm actually now playing around with editing on photos I've taken...so hopefully they come out looking a little better.
August 4th, 2011
@kiwi

Great frame of the picture. Wouldn't change anything.
August 4th, 2011
@babydoll

I like the sense of movement and the icy feel with all the whites. I would crop out the edge of the rink in the foreground I think :D
August 5th, 2011
@cazink

Love the concept of the picture and the way you make the legos look like candy. I would just make the back ones clear instead of blurry to make it look like a bunch of candy.
August 5th, 2011
@babydoll

Great caputre! I think maybe if you cropped it a little to put more of the focus on the skater and brighten the photo to draw the skater away from the background.(: Overall great shot!
August 7th, 2011
@abbeygrace

Excellent pic...wouldn't change anything
August 7th, 2011
@babydoll Thank you!
August 9th, 2011
August 11th, 2011
@mibellesmom

i love this- colours and lighting fantastic- amazed you got good expressions on all of them.
however id have moved the table out of the way so it couldnt be seen and maybe cloned out the shelf.
nice logo but a bit distracting
August 11th, 2011
Thank you for commenting. From now on, I am doing a much smaller and simpler version of this logo. I am so glad to get honest feedback. In this project, I am rarely planning. I am capturing moments as they come. I have the option to go back, if I choose to. I was checking on the girls, and took the pic from the door. If I had taken time to take out the table from the dollhouse, I would have lost the moment. I actually like the table and shelf. It evokes a bit of nostalgia for me. But I see your point!
August 12th, 2011
@mibellesmom The table and shelf kind of add to the room... Otherwise it would be just white walls. If the logo was moved to the left a little it would look like a painting on the wall rather than a logo :) Which is what I thought it was when I first saw the photo LOL
August 13th, 2011

Fantastic photo I wish I could shoot like that! Keep doing what your doing, I wouldn't change anything!
August 14th, 2011
@wbixby

Wouldn't change it. The picture is perfect
August 14th, 2011
@babydoll

I'm not sure what it is but this photo lacksdepth, i think the composition doesnt really help, in saying that i like the fact that you photograph what you love and what is important in your life :)
August 15th, 2011
@tradawn9

I agree :) can't believe I didn't think it. ......

Little boy pic above is adorable, nice composition. It is a bit dark on his face . And too much contrast in one eye, perhaps is the look you are looking for. I would play up the highlights :)
August 15th, 2011
@alk1991

like the composition and the reflection- i really like that its in b&w however i think it would be improved by cropping it closer both top and bottom and maybe using selective colour on the tutu
August 15th, 2011
@mjkthorpe

I'm no good at portraits, but this looks pretty good to me! He looks very relaxed and posed very naturally. It's a small shame that the light on the left side of his face (our right) is a little too strong.
August 16th, 2011
@lluniau

Love the title of the pic and the pic really shows it. I wouldn't change anything.
August 16th, 2011
@wbixby Thank you :)

@mibellesmom Thanks. It's a reflection of the yellow slide that was below him while he was up on top of the one climbing thing at the park. I didn't want to edit it out b/c I thought it was cool how it was so noticeable LOL
