Creating a Website

January 4th, 2012
I have been becoming active in submitting to contests & gallery shows in my area & often the applications will include a place for the artist to give their website of their work so the jury can see more or so they can give the info to the public on the contest sites or in the info or in your bio for the show. I have thought of doing it as a showcase or a portfolio of sorts but have no idea how to go about it. Is a special Facebook page acceptable for these sorts of things or is that not professional enough. Any suggestions or info is welcome as this part of this is all new to me. TIA

You could use a facebook page but if you want your website to be more *you* then I suggest a website builder like wix ( http://www.wix.com/) where you can relatively easily create a custom-designed site. :)

Blogsites are great because they are an easy and free way to build quick SEO. Plus they function exactly the same as a website but have the added benefit of a blog built in. Most are free to start up. Wordpress and Blogspot are the best. Wordpress is definitely better for SEO, but Blogger is probably more user-friendly and easier to customize quickly.

You could do a pretty easy and free website with Weebly. iPage helps you register your domain name and has a Weebly Builder included. Or you could have a more polished but costly result with Zenfolio or Bigfolio. All have templates to use so it's basically a matter of drag and dropping your photos after deciding on the style.

If you're serious about looking professional, get a proper web developer to make your site, or take the time to learn how to code it yourself. (Just my opinion, but I don't think free web-based templates cut it, for a business site. Sorry.)

Consider getting your own URL as well. To my eyes, this seems more professional.

I agree that WordPress would be a quick way to set something up. I think WP looks more professional than Blogger. I also agree about getting your own domain name that would become part of your "brand."

I have both a Facebook page for mine https://www.facebook.com/TerryBeigiePhotography
and a true website I started www.terrybeigie.com
Facebook is free, of course, but you can also do a blog for a lot cheaper than the full website. There are free and cheaper versions too!
