2011 Statistics

January 7th, 2012
When I began the second year of my 365 Project, in January 2011, I decided to try and keep track of some statistics on my photographs. It's mainly to do with which cameras I used for which days, and that kind of stuff. Anyway - if that's your sort of thing, read on...

I used eight different cameras, over 2011. Here's a list of them, in order of how often I used them:

101 photos - Nikon P80 (27.67%)
82 photos - Nikon D3000 (22.47%)
66 photos - Apple iPhone 3G (18.08%)
36 photos - Instagram iPhone app (9.86%)
35 photos - Hipstamatic iPhone app (9.59%)
30 photos - Apple iPhone 4S (8.22%)
5 photos - Apple iSight webcam, on MacBook Pro (1.37%)
1 photo - Pentax K1000 (0.27%)

Total: 356 photos. Add to that the nine days I sadly missed, over the course of the year, and that takes us to 100%.

--

I also decided to split all the photos into two categories - "serious", and "non-serious". I defined them thus:

A serious camera is any device whose primary function is photography - this includes, SLRs, compacts, disposal cameras, film or digital, cheap or expensive.

A non-serious camera is any device which has had a camera added onto it, but whose primary function is not photography. In my case, this refers to my phone and laptop, but this category could also include iPads, or other tablet computers, the iPod touch, or similar media players, and really any device which has the ability to take photos in addition to performing other tasks.

In 2011, 50.41% of my 365 Project was shot on serious cameras. These were, in order of frequency: Nikon P80, Nikon D3000, and Pentax K1000.

47.12% of my 365 Project was shot on non-serious cameras. These were, in order of frequency: iPhone 3G, Instagram, Hipstamatic, iPhone 4S, iSight webcam.

The remaining 2.47% were the aforementioned nine missed days.

--

So, what does this tell me? The split between serious and non-serious cameras was fairly even. I think represents my periods of busy and non-busy work times - when I'm working less, I have more time for "serious" photography, but when I'm busy with lots of work, I grab a couple of minutes to take a quick snap on my iPhone, and that's that.

But it's also indicative of my attitude towards photography in general. It's a hobby - something I enjoy, but don't take too seriously. I'm not one of those snobs who would baulk at the idea of uploading *gasp* a mobile phone picture, or who gets all worked about the "SOOC", or anything. I just like taking pictures.

Personally, I find things like this quite interesting. You might not, but I do. If anyone else does, thanks for reading this far - and I'm happy to upload a copy of the actual files (including the distribution of different camera usage throughout the year, which I haven't really touched on much here) if there's any demand for this.

Finally, I'm sure you'll be pleased to learn that I have decided to continue keeping these records for my third year (2012). You can all look forward to a similar discussion thread around this time in January 2013, in which I bore you all again about which cameras I've used on which days, and why that might've been. Lucky, lucky you.

interesting nerd stats! I like this

Interesting insight to your project. I like your perspective on the serious vs non-serious cameras. My hubby is a mathematician, so I am used to conversations like this, but I would never keep those stats myself!
January 7th, 2012
I cannot wait until this time next year. I hope you will be producing a graph? I love graphs.
January 7th, 2012
(I didn't actually mean that to come out as sarcastically as it inevitably did. I am a bit of a stats nerd myself)

@woot
haha, thanks! :)

@cfitzgerald
Oh, well, I'm sure my little record-keeping seems very amateurish compared to what your husband does! But thanks - I'm glad people are finding this interesting. :)

@manek43509 Oh, no, he can keep stats, but he is a MAILMAN with a math degree and a love of numbers! Crazy, I know.
January 7th, 2012
OK. Anyone interested in this stuff can download the full stats file here.

@wrighty
You're getting excited about it already - I can tell. Do you want to sign up to the mailing list?

@cfitzgerald
Wow, you have to love it to do a degree in it, right? I never used to enjoy maths much at school, actually - but I do enjoy the patterns that numbers make, and I do like statistics about things...
January 7th, 2012
I've set a reminder on my non-serious camera so I don't miss out on next years stats! Seriously though I really like this idea. Might have a look over mine if I get the time. How about a breakdown of colour/black and white. And genres too?
January 7th, 2012
@rich57
Yeah, cool idea. I'll get to work! :P
January 7th, 2012
Oh and location!
January 7th, 2012
@rich57
That'll be a tough one! How specific should I be? That could end up with 365 different location categories, for 365 pictures, if I'm not careful... haha!
January 7th, 2012
How about home/work/countryside/town/beach?. Or even just the actual geographical location (eg I think I may have taken pics in 5 different towns last year). I'm going to have to have a look at mine I think. You've inspired me! I think it was the going as far as the second digital point that got me!
January 7th, 2012
@rich57
The trouble is, with the job I do, I can't just have a category for "work" - 'cause that could be anywhere! I could call all those photos "work", but that wouldn't really give you the location, just what I was doing at the time.
January 7th, 2012
OK. Here are some extra figures for people interested in the distribution of colour/monochrome/etc...

309 photos - Colour (84.66%)
39 photos - Black & White (10.68%)
5 photos - Selective Colouring (1.37%)
3 photos - Sepia (0.82%)

Again, added to the nine days I have missed throughout the year, this totals 365 photographs.
January 7th, 2012
@manek43509 I love that kind of information! Happy New 366 Year.
January 7th, 2012
very cool - love stats - they tell the tale in a way that gives enough distance to see things objectively
January 7th, 2012
Ems
Oh my goodness, so many maths type things there! Well done for keeping track of it all, it is interesting to work it out :)
January 8th, 2012
@manek43509 keep it up, I have a check list on my wall of over 150 themes, When 365 is up I will conduct my survey, looking for info like human environment, season, time of day, techniques, emotions and colors. Hard part is trying to decide which gets a check. Hoping that at the end I will see my likes and skills and work on improvement.

I do like your idea and just wanted to add my 2 sence, thanks :)
January 8th, 2012
Nerd.

I love you, man.
January 8th, 2012
@jinximages
haha, you too!

@eryck
Wow, that's really cool! I know what you mean - it'd be difficult to choose which "category" to put each picture into! Looking forward to seeing the results of this, though... ;)
January 8th, 2012
@emmaroobers
haha, thanks! I'm always interested in this stuff. :)
January 8th, 2012
Interesting! I just might have to try that, too. And I think you need more sepia, this year. And more pictures of drum sets. ;) (Hmm... I might've given myself an idea for today's picture...)
January 8th, 2012
@rainechan
haha, don't worry! The drumkit pictures will resume, I am sure, once I'm back on the road again. ;) (I've had a couple of weeks off from gigging work, just recently - but there will be plenty of opportunities to photograph the gear later on, I'm sure!)
