What else should I challenge myself with?

March 31st, 2012
I've got less than three weeks before I finish 365 and am really trying to push myself to learn what I can in those three weeks. There's a lot I have tried and quite a few things still on my "to do" list, but is there anything else I really must do? Any mandatory shots that are absolute musts?

There are a couple of caveats - any answers have to be cheap - a new camera or lighting rigs aren't options, and I'm using an old point and shoot so there are limits to what I can achieve

Photography types:
* Landscape
* Buildings
* sunsets and sunrises
* night shots
* reflections
* Street candids
* macro - insects, flowers, droplets
* Staged photos with lighting or daylight
* food shots
* Self-portraits - and I still hate, hate, hate them
* crystal ball shots
* moon shots - there's one on my project, but decent shots are out of reach
* food colouring in water
* use of light
- I need more practice on portraits, but I do quite a bit of that doesn't feature here
- I haven't and won't tackle nudes because I work with teenagers who are aware of my project
- bird pictures are well beyond the x 3 zoom on this p&s

Of the mandatory shots that everyone does, I realise I haven't taken any pictures of a daisy, a dandelion clock, anything in fizzy water, anything with crayons, no heart shapes using a book and a ring, or for that matter heart shaped anything, no pegged up words .. and I'm not that sure I want to. Still on my list to do are bubbles.

Processing - I've learnt a lot - partly my daughter, and much from on here:
* cross-processing
* lots of the filter effects from GIMP
* selective colour
* collages
* HDR
* layers - but still masses to learn on that one
* cloned shots - I have an idea for another one, but I'm not sure it will work.
- tilt shift but I need to go find a better subject to use

OK - what are the suggestions to try? No promises that I'll manage them or have time to try, but I've got a fortnight of school holidays now when I've got a bit more time to play

Shane i am a new follower of yours so forgive me if you have already done one or two of my suggestions ..these are some i have seen on here that i interpreted as a must do....One being Blinds, Fog over water is always a cool capture...then again i dont know what is available to you in your area...Early morning fog over water ...And maybe some sports or action shots with night trails!That would be my suggestion!! Good Luck!!

@ellimae you're a star for replying -
fog over water means travelling - I've taken loads of photographs of foggy sunrises but haven't put them up here - just didn't make the cut for the day's picture
Night trails - the most this camera will do is 1s exposure, and I have pushed that one as far as I can go, without stacking pictures
Action shots would be a challenge - thank you

Hi Shanne there is so much you have done that it will be tricky. I dont see b/w on your list and dont remember seeing them? Might have missed them or forgotten and maybe not enough challenge. Will you leave the project.. Will really miss your photos and comments.

@jennywren - I'm useless at doing b&w although there are 6 up so far in March, if you count the sepia, I regularly try and challenge myself to do more of them.

I'm leaving when I finish. I think I've pushed myself as far as I can with this camera and a new camera isn't an option at the moment. When and if I can buy a new camera I may well do another year to learn how to use it.

@shanne Thanks for putting your list of accomplishments up. As someone who is just starting out.....my challenge is finding ideas right now. Plus i need to learn to take my camera with me more. May i ask, what type of camera/lens do you currently have? if possible you can go to borrowlenses.com (i think that's the site) and rent a lens or camera for a few days and push yourself that way. Good Luck to you.

@irabat I'm using a Sony Cybershot - 7.2MB x3 optical zoom ... which I really do take pretty much everywhere.

@shanne I don't have any suggestions right now... but I'm going to miss you being around!!!!

what she said ^^^^^^. Really gonna miss both your photos & your thoughtful comments on my efforts!

@shanne Hi! I have recognised your boots from comments as I've been online but have only today had a look at your shots - they are super! I can't think of anything you haven't done - but mention that I've just done a month of alphabet letters (finding the letter somewhere in real life and snapping it).. the challenge I found was doing the macro shot, then editing the letter by straightening/cropping etc but also getting rid of bits of lettering nearby. If you find an initial you like (churches have beautiful ones) you could see what I mean. Enjoy your last couple of weeks and call back in occasionally as some do if you have sudden inspiration to share :) Good luck!

@filsie65 you're a star for responding and I've seen you commenting and also on the weekly selfies threads.

There are several Alphabet threads, there's the found alphabet which Jani Maki and Nadine did beautifully -
@deens http://365project.org/deens/overflow and
@janmaki http://365project.org/janmaki/good-stuff-too/2011-09

There's the A is for ... type, which Lisa Conrad @lisaconrad did for her final month http://365project.org/lisaconrad/365/2012-02 and I did in May last year

I think if I had Ace membership I'd go for the found alphabet thread for a month in a different album

(and the only two links in a post is getting boring now)

I have a different take on this. Instead of trying some new thing, maybe you want to go back and look at your past pictures and see if there is anything you can do to improve them. I'm never satisfied with mine so I'm always looking to go back and take a pic of a past subject in a new way, different light, etc. Or, try some new PP technique or method. FFT.

Realy respect that you came this far! I don't even have 100 days yet.
Maybe an idea you can do anywhere with any amera, is to do one week one color. So look for objects with this color and try to make them the main object in the pic. Or a bit more difficult: make shots that follow the color wheel along all colors ( http://bit.ly/Haiv8g). And ofcourse don't forget to ave fun these final weeks!

@shanne Gosh those alphabets are gorgeous - I saw one last year in 'calendar' form which gave me the challenge to do it one month (should have made it February!)
It was taking and editing the single letter which I found a challenge. (Four of mine were from church including the medieval letters).
Tried this for the first time yesterday & enjoyed it... http://365project.org/filsie65/just-stuff
Hope you enjoy whatever you choose ... if it were me I think I'd be doing my favourite shots again as well as the challenges :)

I'm going to be miss your shots. You have done great. I think you're gong to be surprised who much will transfer to your new camera when you do get it. You will already have a wealth of knowledge for what matters in photography.

I personally would like to see more of Epping, the tube, the church, and see more shots that are zoomed and where the subject fills the frame. That's is another great ways to get great DOF with a blurred background when you can't afford a pro level lens.

Thanks in advance for all the new shots you do take.

I look forward to whatever you decide, I love your photos!

download hugin free software and do some panoramas, this is fine with point and shoots. Ask for more info I can point you to examples in my proj.

@mwarren365 the beginning of my project is pretty much all the town and church - and I stopped taking so many pictures of the church when someone commented that it was in all my pictures.

@chewyteeth I've got hugin, it's where to take shots that work as panorama shots - getting to a vantage point that gives me a wide enough view, although there's somewhere I've used. All the towers are locked and you need to arrange access.
