Haha, if you'd left it at "Show me your orbs" this thread would have been very interesting indeed!
I use a very big sphere (110mm), which frankly is too big. I did take a shot though with a smaller orb (about 1.5 cm). I am pretty sure the smaller ones work just as good as larger ones, and they are so much more convenient!
@grizzlysghost WOW - the focus in that small orb is amazing. @onie these were from an Aussie seller - 3 for $14 (plus postage). I am hoping they are OK.
One secret to orbs is Depth of Field. The image is cast on the front of the globe, and wraps around to the edges. You should set your dof to cover the distance from the near edge to the outside edges. On a large orb, I have to set my camera to at least f/10 to get all of it (any less and the edges get blurry). The smaller your orb, the better your aperture options; so in my opinion, your 4cm's should be ideal!
@sdpace Thanks Stacy - I love that 3rd photo .... my guess is that you have a 6cm ball if it is the same size a lens cap. I was looking for one of those wind-chime things and even in ugly water fountains, but the ones I found either had flecks in them or were coloured glass.
@corymbia I'd like to get some orbs too but the one's I see on ebay are all bigger and I'd actually like to try a smaller one. What did you search for to fine the 3 40mm ones here in Australia? I can't find them. Maybe you bought out the stock!
@terryvet92 I think I searched for glass balls or spheres on eBay. This listing was a one-off so I hope they are what I hope they are. So hard to tell if they are clear or not when the photograph is on a white background (and whether you believe the description).
@jreyna heh - that's when I started scouring junk shops for small glass spheres.... to no avail! @emjay8 oh that is lovely - thanks. @pizzaboy whoa - sadly I am not that clever.
@shanne yes - I had seen that one, but as I am really wanting to look at the effect of ball size, I thought it best to start a new discussion. @monika64 I'll remember that Monika, but I am thinking I will probably be able to use the 3 of them - one in the car, one at home and one in camera bag. @itsonlyart is that inside bubbles that I am seeing? @fladeb nice one @sbb1980 the waiting bit is hard - especially since I now won't expect it til mid next week at the earliest! @karlo57 interesting shot! @sharritta Thanks - I think I will see how I go with the 40mm but am still keen on a larger ball.
I agree with Aaron, I was gonna show MY orbs but alas... lol really, I thought everyone was going to show fake ghost orbs. Where do all you get the balls?
@itsonlyart I think I havea paperweight like that somewhere.... @sharritta thanks - I can't wait for it to come now. @dkg lovely - I was admiring the ones on Amazon, but sadly, they won't ship them to Australia. @mikhasus - ha very magical. I really like the effect here.
@bobfoto I was waiting for someone to do that! - I got a good shot of a golden orb this week and it's up on my FB page ;)
@chasingwishes heh. eBay seems the only option here in Oz, but I'm told that Amazon has a great selection if you live in a country that they will ship it to.

@rich57 awesome shot. Thanks.
I really need to look into buying one of these!
@emjay8 oh that is lovely - thanks.

And light orbs:
I need to play with light orbs again.

@shanne coolio - this makes me think they will be OK.
I only have an 8cm one but I do love using it
@monika64 if you check that link there might be a smaller orb on offer!
and here is the 2nd one I did (first one I liked). This one is thru a 50mm orb:
@monika64 I'll remember that Monika, but I am thinking I will probably be able to use the 3 of them - one in the car, one at home and one in camera bag.

@fladeb nice one
