Show me your orb photos

April 4th, 2012
I just ordered a 4 cm glass orb / sphere.
(Well actually, I ordered 3 of them because that's how many were in the eBay listing.)

I had wanted a slightly larger one (6-8cm) but I couldn't pass up 3 for under $20 (especially since all the others were considerably dearer).

I wonder if anyone has had successful results with a 4 cm diameter orb and would share their photos below.
Thanks
Amanda

Haha, if you'd left it at "Show me your orbs" this thread would have been very interesting indeed!

I use a very big sphere (110mm), which frankly is too big. I did take a shot though with a smaller orb (about 1.5 cm). I am pretty sure the smaller ones work just as good as larger ones, and they are so much more convenient!

I'm pretty sure @sdpace has a photo with a small orb, will go look. yep it looks pretty small and is an amazing photo. I have the 60mm and 80mm
April 4th, 2012
My 60 was $15 and the 80 was $24. From China, but they didn't take long to get here

@grizzlysghost WOW - the focus in that small orb is amazing.
@onie these were from an Aussie seller - 3 for $14 (plus postage). I am hoping they are OK.

One secret to orbs is Depth of Field. The image is cast on the front of the globe, and wraps around to the edges. You should set your dof to cover the distance from the near edge to the outside edges. On a large orb, I have to set my camera to at least f/10 to get all of it (any less and the edges get blurry). The smaller your orb, the better your aperture options; so in my opinion, your 4cm's should be ideal!

@grizzlysghost thanks - I shall bear that in mind.

@onie i have no idea how big mine is. i bought an ugly spinner windchime thing and took the ball out of it. it's about as big as a lens cap, I guess.
April 4th, 2012
@sdpace :) teehee!! what a great idea!
April 4th, 2012
I borrowed this from @shanne and dont know the dimensions but even though I've got big hands I think it was a small orb...
April 4th, 2012
I have a few :)

April 4th, 2012
@sdpace Thanks Stacy - I love that 3rd photo .... my guess is that you have a 6cm ball if it is the same size a lens cap. I was looking for one of those wind-chime things and even in ugly water fountains, but the ones I found either had flecks in them or were coloured glass.

@rich57 awesome shot. Thanks.
April 4th, 2012
Oops, I thought you meant orbs, as in ghosts.....love all of these as well!!! :)

I really need to look into buying one of these!
April 4th, 2012
@sdpace You have the BEST. :)
April 4th, 2012
@corymbia I'd like to get some orbs too but the one's I see on ebay are all bigger and I'd actually like to try a smaller one. What did you search for to fine the 3 40mm ones here in Australia? I can't find them. Maybe you bought out the stock!
April 4th, 2012
@scooter oooh - I like those too. Especially this one which I like to think is my darling hubby showing me he was at H's birthday party....

April 4th, 2012
@beautifulthing yes - Stacy's pics were the ones I first saw and fell in love with.
April 4th, 2012
@terryvet92 I think I searched for glass balls or spheres on eBay. This listing was a one-off so I hope they are what I hope they are. So hard to tell if they are clear or not when the photograph is on a white background (and whether you believe the description).
April 4th, 2012
All these pictures are making me want to get one of these glass balls!!
April 4th, 2012
Mel
Yes mine is 4cm, bought it a few weeks ago and saved it up especially for this occasion for its big debut this week :)
April 4th, 2012
@corymbia Didn't realise what kind of "orb" you meant

April 4th, 2012
@jreyna heh - that's when I started scouring junk shops for small glass spheres.... to no avail!
@emjay8 oh that is lovely - thanks.
@pizzaboy whoa - sadly I am not that clever.
April 4th, 2012
I have both glass orbs:

And light orbs:

I need to play with light orbs again.
April 4th, 2012
@rich57 that orb is 40mm - 4cm so the same thing you've ordered Amanda - I've got a couple of shots using it on here

@mcrt awesome - both kinds :)
@shanne coolio - this makes me think they will be OK.
April 4th, 2012
I've done a few of these, but this is my fav so far..

April 4th, 2012
@achilleos I do really like this size orb - great photo.
April 4th, 2012
I'llbuy one of those off you Amanda if you want, by the looks of things it is a better size for photos.
I only have an 8cm one but I do love using it
April 4th, 2012
By the way - did you see this discussion? http://365project.org/discuss/general/11728/orbs
@monika64 if you check that link there might be a smaller orb on offer!

Here is my latest one it is thu a 110mm orb:

and here is the 2nd one I did (first one I liked). This one is thru a 50mm orb:

April 4th, 2012
Here is another one of the same tree as above except it is thru the larger orb
April 5th, 2012
@shanne yes - I had seen that one, but as I am really wanting to look at the effect of ball size, I thought it best to start a new discussion.
@monika64 I'll remember that Monika, but I am thinking I will probably be able to use the 3 of them - one in the car, one at home and one in camera bag.
@itsonlyart is that inside bubbles that I am seeing?
@fladeb nice one
@sbb1980 the waiting bit is hard - especially since I now won't expect it til mid next week at the earliest!
@karlo57 interesting shot!
@sharritta Thanks - I think I will see how I go with the 40mm but am still keen on a larger ball.
April 5th, 2012
@corymbia Its bubbles inside an orb :)
April 5th, 2012
@corymbia I think you will enjoy it! Good luck. I look forward to seeing what you do with it!

April 5th, 2012
My Garden Orb.

Weaver that is...
April 5th, 2012
I agree with Aaron, I was gonna show MY orbs but alas... lol really, I thought everyone was going to show fake ghost orbs. Where do all you get the balls?
April 5th, 2012
@itsonlyart I think I havea paperweight like that somewhere....
@sharritta thanks - I can't wait for it to come now.
@dkg lovely - I was admiring the ones on Amazon, but sadly, they won't ship them to Australia.
@mikhasus - ha very magical. I really like the effect here.

@bobfoto I was waiting for someone to do that! - I got a good shot of a golden orb this week and it's up on my FB page ;)
April 5th, 2012
@chasingwishes heh. eBay seems the only option here in Oz, but I'm told that Amazon has a great selection if you live in a country that they will ship it to.
April 5th, 2012
@corymbia - why don't you get Amazon to ship to one of your 365 friends o'erseas and then ask them to forward it to you?
April 6th, 2012
@bobfoto I did think of that, but the cost adds up. I've just ordered the 60mm on eBay delivered for under $20.
