Hi friends, my brother in law needs a P&S that he can keep in his truck to take a decent picture from time to time for his new boss. He will be shooting wild life and landscapes and the features need to be quick and simple.
@helstor has just got a new P&S he seems well happy with - want to chip in, Helge? My Canon Ixus 75 is probably antique now but I have no complaints about it...
I love my FinePix F550EXR - it's a great little camera. Light, zoom is amazing, easy to use and has the capabilities of shooting a lot of what a SLR does as it's able to be set to manual.
Canon powershots are spot on. I started out with a 3.2mp one years ago and have since used 3 models. My current Powershot is the A490 and its a few years old now so can be bought new on-line for about £40. Mine was 90 with the Canon printer, I'd say it was worth £90 on its own.
I just ordered myself a new p&s today based on reading on here, a Panasonic Lumix...I wasn't familiar with them at all before but since I don't have it yet I can't really say what I think about it, I have my fingers crossed tho ;)
The 95% of my shots were with a Cannon power Shot SX100 IS.
I have never had a problem with it and the battery life is very good, I also use it for video. Also wuite easy to use.Feel free to check out my postings
I got a Canon G12 last year and love it. Very easy to carry around although a little larger than some p&s. Has some manual settings and a great HD video. Some of my pics are taken with it on my album.
Loved my Kodak Easyshare, and they are going really cheaply right now. Got some quite nice bird shots with it. Had to replace it (got sand in the lens mechanism) and got a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H55, which I am also quite pleased with.

I've done most of my 365 with my Canon PowerShot A3100 IS, even though I have a 30D. It's a basic consumer level camera in that it doesn't really offer manual settings, but it's very small, the battery lasts nearly forever, and if you know how cameras work you can force it to do stuff it doesn't automatically do.
Easy to carry around, survived one 2' fall (the tape is actually cosmetic in that I'd much rather carry around a beat up looking camera than one that is shiny and a tempting target). Click through the to the actual post on the above pic to see a few of my favourite examples.
As much as I like canons, if your BIL is more gravity prone than me or he's just using it in rough environments I'd suggest looking at some of the drop proof or tough cameras, a number of companies have them. If it's just a P&S for a few quick photos you don't need to spend all that much on one.
Like Phil @filsie65 says, I have been shooting most of my pics with a Canon SX220 (SX230 is the same but with GPS) compact camera. It has a great zoom lens (28mm - 392mm) and you can shoot in Auto mode or full manual and anything in between. For web use or normal print sizes it's perfect. I have just upgraded to an SX240 (SX260 is the same with GPS) and I love it... wider at the wide end and longer at the long end.... and the best thing is that it is so small that I can keep it in my jacket pocket and have it with me at all times.
Check out the Canon S100--great little camera with a larger sensor than most and full manual controls. It's a lot of power in a small, pocketable package.
