As many of you may know we just started a serious of challenges called the Camera Settings Challenge for those of us who want to learn how to use our cameras and stop the auto reliance. For these challenges the winner of the challenge chooses a professional to host and challenge (and teach) us for the the next challenge.
Here is the issue - I would like to make a list of people who are willing to host a challenge who feel they have enough experience under their belt that they could come up with a new challenge.
1) Would you be willing to be added to list of experienced photographers that could host a future challenge? Come on please don't be shy.
2) Do you know someone you would recommend to be added to the list (if they agree)?
First off, thanks Kathy for starting this challenge, it is such a good one to learn more about our cameras.
I have some recommendations of some 365ers who have been really helpful and generous with their advice to me on a number of subjects. I guess they will respond via this thread if they agree to be hosts
In no particular order @gurry@38mm@orangecrush@sdpace (not posting, but I see her pop up still in discussions and comments) @ronphotos365@shadesofgrey and my own personal mentor, @peterdegraaff , when he gets back from his holiday
@myhrhelper I'm afraid that even though I only use manual settings, I wouldn't be of much help except in the area of post processing, which doesn't help people trying to learn the settings on their cameras.... well... except white balance... its a setting most people don't worry about because it can be corrected so easily in post processing.
@onie Oh wow, as flattering as that is to be mentioned in that list I'm not sure what use I would be. I wouldn't know one end of a DSLR from another :)
Though if you want a challenge about using a camera which is older than yourself, then I'm your man.
@38mm
you do use settings on your film camera? That's what this challenge/learning experience is all about! @gurry
I was hoping you would. You have a great way of explaining things. I printed out your "lesson" on ISO, and of course you introduced me to reverse macro
@onie Haha, yeah I haven't really been following these challenges so assumed it was stuff like white balance, and changing ISO etc. the stuff I don't have to do.
Ok, yep I'm in. I have one which might be fun for people to try
sweets. I know nuffin! but I'll challenge the shit out of it if the need arises, my areas of expertise are 35mm, natural light, lomography, shooting models and pizza toppings.
If this is an attempt to corale all the experienced mentors on the site its not exhaustive, I have a couple of go to guys, but I wouldn't be able to give advice about shooting models whilst Weng @toast is around, he told me most of what I know.
@myhrhelper
not me
its hard to say really. @noo@toast@pocketmouse@lbmcshutter
all seem to know what they are doing. It would be an interesting thread if it could find out the most clued up people on the website. I'm a big fan of the website/community www.modelmayhem.com and they have mentors on there, people who've been around for a while. And admins and gatekeepers and experience is visible and advice is given pretty freely. For all the discussion threads that come up here the amount of actual usable knowledge which changes hands is laughable. Mostly its a repeat of threads like 'Having trouble uploading?' I'd love to see long standing 365 members being given 'VIP' or 'Mentor' titles. Maybe if favs and popular page appearances were shown in some accumulative way like the star system on eBay. But then favs and PP is a bad indicator of experience and skill.
I don't know the answer in other words but I think its a great idea to record the people who actually know what they are doing, and give solid advice, and get them to make challenges. The education side, and the critique side of this website could stand a lot of improvement.
@myhrhelper
I think you should make a longlist, on second thoughts, ask for nominations, make a long list and then ask for votes. You could start another thread and word the title to get results - vote for the best/most knowledgeable togs on 365. then another one later where you whittle it down to 10. Then ask them to do the challenges, but probably a longer process than you plan.
Any folks wanna see how it could be should look at flickr and modelmayhem.com I'm not saying 365 is wrong, I'm saying it could be better. Model mayhem has daily contests, galleries of different catigories of pictures, advice and tutorials posted like blog posts, guest bloggers, all made possible by assigned mentors and admins. Also themes fav lists, like 'My fav sunsets' where you collect together other peoples posts that you love. Ah well, I've gone off task I think.
@myhrhelper
There's been some confusion Kathy. I shouldn't be on the list!!! I just gave some recommendations of the people who have helped me. Up until a couple of months ago my camera had been locked on fully auto. @chewyteeth
My interpretation of this thread is that Kathy is just trying to find some experience people who are willing to give up some time to host a challenge for inexperienced people, to encourage them to learn about the settings on their cameras. Not a competition to find the "best" photographer on 365.
@onie
hence my signing off with
" ah well I've gone off task I think"
she'll get any number of volunteers but my idea was that Woody Allen might volunteer advice about being a step father, but the advice mightn't be any good.
@chewyteeth
I see what you mean. I just think this challenge is such a good idea for auto shooters like myself. Even if I get it wrong, I've still learnt something. Now that I have discovered what you can achieve using all the settings, I get it wrong on a regular basis, but it's great to have some people who are willing to help you get it right.
@onie Yep, if you get it right first time then you haven't learnt shit. Anything that gets people off Auto is good, though anything that gets people shooting film is even better :)
@38mm
You are so right. My first attempt at the slow shutter speed of water took at least 20 goes before I got one that I was mostly happy with. I only used shutter priority, and played with different times. I'm a long way from fully manual!!
I do have a film Pentax camera.....never got off auto, and I think it's broken :(
@onie@onie@38mm
I just got my first DSLR, I had a point n shoot. I wanted to learn how to use it and all the wonderful settings and thought there may be others who would like to learn as well. So I started this Camera Settings Challenge.
The winner of each challenge selects an experienced photographer to host and come up with a new camera settings challenge. The winner can pick whoever they want to host but it became clear that the winners don't always know who to go to to host the next challenge. So I thought I would put together a list that if they want they can ask one of the individuals on the list. They can pick anyone they want regardless if it's on the list or not.
Leonie I will take you off the list, and I'm so glad to see this challenge has really taken off well. I want to keep learning.
@beetle365 The winner of the Camera Settings Challenge selects an experienced photographer to host the next challenge. Since some people don't know who to ask I am creating this list. The host comes up with a challenge idea, gives tips on how to do it, and offers links for reference points. Those individuals that take part can post their pic's on the challenge thread and experienced photographers (anyone) and the host offer suggestions on how to improve based on the specific camera setting they have chosen for the challenge. Sometimes there will be very basic questions since it is very new to many people and they have never ventured out of "auto". At the end of the challenge the host will select the top 5 pic's that best demonstrate that specific setting and then everyone votes. The winner is selected and he/she picks a new experienced photographer to host and give us a new challenge.
