Quick Fire Advice Needed!

My point and shoot has broken :'( (don't worry, my DSLR is still working :D) I've had that little camera for about 5 years and it's served me well but now, sadly, it has died.

It was a Canon Ixus 900Ti. all my family have Canon P&S's but I have a Nikon DSLR so I'm fairly open minded as to what to get now. but I need to buy a new little P&S because I need one to pop in my bag and carry around with me.

Basically, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should get? I'd like something with decent quality and battery life but I don't want to be spending ridiculous amounts of money on it as I'd rather spend it on my SLR... although I don't mind spending a bit, if it's worth it. I'm going into Leeds tomorrow so that'd be the perfect time to get one... if I can decide what to get between now and then! Thank youuu! :)

Panasonic Lumix, I had two, for most of my first year, superb cameras. absolutely superb. I got one from Tesco 89 reduced to 59, and one from ebay worth £200 for about £70, so shop for a good deal. My sister got her fs10?? I think was the model, from Currys, £150 reduced to 90 something like that. great range.

I've got an Ixus i7 from about 7 years ago. It's as tiny as a very small mobile phone (they don't do them anymore) and it's great for carrying in my handbag. If it broke I would definitely look into another Ixus - I think they're good quality and pretty good value for money.
We bought a Panasonic Lumix for someone as a gift a few years ago, but it's much bigger/heavier than my little Canon. It does an awful lot more (I think) but if you're like me only wanting a small, handy handbag camera for when you don't want your SLR I'd probably go for something smaller/lighter. I'd recommend the Lumix more for someone who want to upgrade from a basic p&s but don't want to buy a bridge or SLR x

I have never had a bad Canon from the Powershot range and they are pretty compact now compared to there early models, last years models sometimes drop to around £50, I got my A490 with a printer for £89 and I love it and some of the images it has produced, even my 7 year old has got to grips with it.

I'm with Dave, @chewyteeth and Tracy @tracywilliams, I've always had Lumix's (now a dslr). their lenses are leica, which makes them a great p&s @tracywilliams

@monika64 The lens are NOT Leica, they are made by Panasonic to Leica specifications but it is not a Leica lens

@38mm so is there a lot of difference in quality and function or are they pretty similar?

I love my Sony Cybershot....it is my only camera though and I have nothing to compare it to. Want to get a dslr soon but right now I'm pretty happy with most of the pics I get with it.

@monika64 Well with function there are some differences in the firmware on similar models. But as I don't own a digital Leica or Panasonic I can't really comment. As for Lens, I think you get what you pay for, so google the prices for an idea.

All I know is my Leica is 21 years old and show no signs of giving up, how long do you think your Panasonic will last? Though that maybe unfair comparing a 35mm camera to a digital.

I'm with the Panasonic Lumix .... have had two ... with the Leica lens they are fantastic quality and small.

I love my Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ10

I've seen impressive results from a Panasonic Lumix, but I also like the Nikon Coolpix range. They are excellent for macro work and you can move the focus area rather than being limited to a central focus point as on many P&Ss.

I have a Nikon AW 100 and love it. Great for macro shots, is tough and waterproof. I had a Pentax W90 and tossed it in the corner cause I found the images were very poor quality. I found with he AW 100 an the D7000 I have all my bases covered... well.
Good luck with your shopping.
