Selling Used Lens'

July 12th, 2012
I am looking to sell my 50mm 1.8 and 75-300mm both Canon, and I was wondering if anyone has experience selling their lens' online? If so, where have you sold them?

Tomorrow, I am going to our local camera shop to see if they will trade them in, but I want to see trade in value and success rate first. I am so tired of mediocre equipment and making small upgrades as I can afford them.

Thank you for any help or advice you can give.

(I have checked the message boards and couldn't find any information other than ebay, which is well known. I am looking for advice, as I have very little experience with ebay and it is not good. Thank you!)

I've sold lenses a few times on ebay - high-end lenses. Apart from the endless questions that I got from novices I found it a good experience, and I didnt lose out by selling it cheaper to a store who will want their cut...

@cfitzgerald Avoid local camera shops, you will get way less than you deserve. Lenses hold their value very well. eBay also takes a fee so I would only use as a last resort. I would go to a photographers website forum like photography on the net or dpreview. I've sold close to 10k worth of gear there and you get proper value.

What Bard said.
But also ebay is a good back up. Basically if you haven't sold on ebay before you need to register as a seller, which involves some security checks, they rung me and I had to take down a code to verify. Then you just upload it, take some great pictures of it. Always sell individual items, don't group them together. Also search for the prices those lenses are going for, click advanced search and click to see also completed auctions so you can see what the lenses actually go for. Also use reserves or buy it now offers so you can't lose out. I've sold some 50 or 60 things on ebay without a hitch.

I also see a lot of people selling lenses on craigslist (which is where I bought my 18-200 lens).

"mediocre equipment" Don't sell yourself short. You do a wonderful job with what you've got. It's half eye/half equipment. Good luck with the sale! :)

Also consider selling on amazon. I like amazon better than eBay when selling electronics such as camera equipment. I've had very good luck.

@blightygal @bradleynovak @chewyteeth @rockinrobyn @mandyj92 @brianl Thank you all so much for your advice and insight! After visiting the store today, going through them, is not the way to go! I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences. I will be looking into each of the options!

@mandyj92 You are so sweet! Thanks! I am just getting frustrated with losing so many shots, especially during sessions. :-)
