wedding edits - brain cramp

September 25th, 2012
Please help me stop over thinking this!!
I shot a wedding over the weekend. Very casual, very challenging due to weather and (eventually) very fun!!
I've gone through everything and done a bit of editing on each but I need a bit of guidance.

Do I edit all in the same style?
I had asked the couple what they were looking for in terms of 'look'. They have seen my work on my FB page and she knows I'm a fan of processing. She says she likes the b&w but has a love for sepia. The artwork in her home seems to be mostly sepia earthy tones.

How should I crop?
I've been cropping according to comp and how it would look best. What if I've cropped to 8x10 and they'd like an 11x14? Most shots I've shot wide, so that wouldn't be a problem to fix.

CD/DVD
I've bought some DVD-RWs to give them. They are having a bbq when they get back from their honeymoon and would like to show the photos on the tv while everyone is passing through the house.
I had thought of cropping and saving each shot in the different dimensions and edits (lots of work) but this would be very repetitive when shown to their friends.

Just wondering what others have done in this situation.

@shutterbugger Can't wait to hear what others say in terms of cropping - have wondered the same when I do pics for family and friends.

As for processing when I have had professional shoots done with my family the photographer has given us one "normal" one with their special splash - hazy, overexposed, whatever their style is and one in BW or Sepia.

I think whatever you do be consistent throughout all the pictures. Obviously there can be bw and color and even some toned ones but i would make sure they are all consistently processed. Also since they are wedding pictures that people will have forever i wouldnt over process them to much to where in 5 years they look really out dated. Think about how cheesy select coloring is now lol. I would crop to the needs of the image and not care about print size.

Regarding the CD/DVD, have you considered making one copy for them with ALL of the shots on it and making another one with just select shots on it for showing to family and friends on the tv?

what Cheryll says. you do two DVDs one titled everything, originals and edits, and one with your favourite 20-30 pictures on however you feel they were best processed and chopped. They can show either on the day, if they're like oh Uncle Jacks not on this CD, then you can say well fair enough but there will be a bit of repetition. Edit how you feel but the best option would be if you say I can apply edit X to other pictures just get back to me if you want and combinations different to what I've done. Invariably their fav is not your fav and they might like their fav in sepia and cropped a bit.
well done!

what program are you using to make your DVD? i did one in Aperture and i can't get it to work on my DVD player. It works fine in any of our computers, but won't play on the TV. I need to do more research......maybe I used the wrong kind of DVD, maybe I need to try a different program......that is why I am wondering what you were using.

If you are cropping for DVD and TV be careful with the ratio that you use.
Also loading times will be quite slow if you keep the resolution too high.

@paulaag Paula, check the manual on your DVD player. Mine will not play DVD- but will play DVD+. So might be the disk rather than aperture.

It's best to process everything in the same way. When they look through the images there will be a sense of continuity. For the DVD you will want to know what aspect ratio their television or monitor is and select that as the format. Make it an autoplay disc that repeats upon completion. What software will you be using for the DVD? Careful to buy good quality discs. Give all permissions. And try the disc before delivering!

Similar dilemma to me on the completion of my recent shoot! I've opted for little editing, other than slight contrast and brightness to make up for the poor lighting conditions in the rain. Some of my favourite shots I have cropped and turned to B&W as options for my friends. I'm going to give them a CD of the majority of shots and then one of what I would consider the best ones. I've made sure I've cropped all shots keeping proportions as I know my mates won't want to get purpose made frames . Got a secondary dilemma that the florist from the wedding wants to send my prints to a magazine to print and promote his (and my) work so need to consider the edits for that!!

If/when you give them the full edited and unedited images, be sure to have something saying that you still retain the rights to the photos and to what extent i.e. just for your portfolio, to make reproductions for them or other clients, to license/sell on stock photo sites, etc. That way you at least have them to use again in the future if you want and they are willing to release them for said purpose(s). I know that usually the photographer automatically retains the rights but just to CYA....it can't hurt.

@shadesofgrey good point, thanks. I'd just use them in a portfolio, on FB and stuff like that. I might give istock another go, but wouldn't put people shots on there!

@sparkle look at you lady!! Poor you, having to edit some shots for a magazine ;)

Thanks for your two cents guys! I'll probably use the windows dvd maker that's on my laptop. I would have no idea how to crop for aspect ratio....but can't you change the settings on the tv for that? ....or wouldn't that work.

Just had a small batch printed 4x6 to see what they look like. Not too bad! In the past, I've had a hard time with editing and skin tone...but these look good. Can't wait to show them to you to see what you think! I'll make one disc for the masses and one disc for them, with a selection of processing ideas.

I'll be getting to this on Thursday. I've never burnt a slideshow so I may have more questions! I'd like to put a song to it too...but, again, I'm a noob.

@dmortega Great link...thanks! I stopped reading the packages after #3! Great advice

@soia no worries...there will be NO selective colouring here!

What I typically do as far as cropping is to have a cropped version of anything I put online, cropped for composition and how I think it looks best. When I actually give a cd with pictures, I include 2 folders: cropped and uncropped. That way if they choose to print, they can crop from the original to match whatever size they want, but they can see from the cropped version how best to line up the crop, if that makes sense.

@shutterbugger may be worth using Sony Vegas movie editor for a slide show. Google Picasa has some cool options too.

I'd love to use Portrait+ to enhance the portraits after shooting. which software would you like to do portrait retouching?

Besides, I think it's great ideas to create your own video from wedding photos for memory
