Converting RAW to TIFF in iPhoto; but must convert to JPEG to select

December 6th, 2012
I just started trying out RAW. I have done some reading up on it because I am fairly new to DSLRs and all the finery that comes with them. I read that a RAW pic must be converted to another format in order to be seen/uploaded/etc. In iPhoto, which right now is the editor I'm using most, I can convert to tiff or jpeg. When I converted to tiff and wanted to upload my pic here, I could see it in my "pictures" folder but could not select it. I had to convert to jpeg in order to be able to select the photo for uploading. Why is this? Is there way to select the tiff photo? Or does it matter one way or the other?
When saving a pic from RAW, is tiff or jpeg the better option as far as retaining clarity, sharpness, color, etc?
My goal this next year is to improve upon editing (and buying PS or Lightroom or something) and work with more RAW pictures. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

@2thgirl There's a discussion on tiff vs. jpeg here http://365project.org/discuss/general/8513/tiff-vs-jpg , however for web uploads you have to use JPEG. Also make sure you export the JPEG's using sRGB and not adobe RGB when uploading to this page otherwise the colors might look less vibrant, see http://365project.org/discuss/general/13954/why-are-the-colors-less-vibrant-in-my-uploaded-photos

@primitiveprobe I wonder is the srgb is part of my photo quality problem here.

@primitiveprobe @phillyphotos I need to go back and check that sRGB thing now too. I have noticed a considerable loss of color and vibrancy with my pictures too.
Thanks Andreas

@primitiveprobe Oh, I didn't know about the sRGB vs adobe RGB issue. So much to learn! Thanks!
