HELP, what should I charge....

January 16th, 2013
We have a new Hotel near completion in our town and they want to use my landscape pictures of our area to showcase in the rooms. I have no idea what to charge. The owners say they have their own frames, which worries me a little as I know the frames should match the type of picutre. They would pay for the printing cost. What would you ask for in additon for the work???? I am clueless and have no idea what the going rate would be for something like this??? THX all.

Wow, that sure sounds like an awesome opportunity, well done! I have no idea what to charge on this kind of scale, but I would think a contract limiting their "license" to just the prints you sell them would be a good idea (so they can't put them on a website or something, unless you want to include that). If they want to showcase their rooms on a website which include your photos in their "room views" I would include that too. And the more prints they want, the less I would charge. I currently charge about $80 per print above my cost, but I only sell limited prints on aluminum and acrylic, and certainly not to this scale! Again, congratulations!

Caz
I have no clue either, but wanted to say Congratulations Shirley ! That's awesome !

@grizzlysghost Thanks, that gives me some idea as to where to begin and what to charge...is that 80.00 just a set fee for the actual art aspect of it? So no matter what size the print (since they are paying for all those costs) I would still charge 80.00 above and beyond for my craft.

Shirley, Congratulations! I too have no idea, but Aaron offers some good advice. What ever you settle on for a price I would insure that you are properly credited and that they are authorized ONLY to use those prints. If they want them for more, then I'd seek professional advice. Good luck.

Congratulations!!! That awesome!

I have know clue, as to how much it should cost them. But do you know how many they want?? That might give yourself an idea as to how much to charge them.

@tryeveryday @grammyn Awww, thx ladies!
January 16th, 2013
@shirljess I feel a connection with you because my sister lives in the Palouse and so am very glad to see a "friend" do well!
January 16th, 2013
@grammyn Yes, that is right. I remember chatting with you about that last summer. Thx again for the well wishes ;)
January 16th, 2013
@shirljess Well I won't tell you my price's, you may be in the US but are still competition. My rates vary on what rights I am also selling, size's, whether it was digital / film, a limited run or not.

I would not allow them to print themselve's unless I knew the printers quality of work, and would place restriction's on frame style. Remember this is advertising your work, do not allow a bad frame or print to ruin a reputation.

@shirljess Congratulations!

I have no clue. It's good that you started this discussion. I have someone asking me about my mountain shots too. The only thing I can advice would be to make sure you add your watermark logo. I don't know if that would make a difference......

@grizzlysghost gave some good advice too! :)

No idea here either ~ but ~ WAY TO GO! :-)

i would let them hang my work, at the hotel for free, as long as they would also display the artist and contact information so i could get potential business. the hardest thing is affording the printing and framing... however if they can offer you that then you should get as much of your work on display as possible. If people like your work in the hotel and can pick up postcards with the work with your contact details then they may well end up in some nice commissions?? then you can charge what your time is worth..... Also would be a good way to barter of the possibility of having an exhibition at the hotel????

failing that it depends whether you are selling them the image, or the picture. if you sell the image it is theirs and they can do what they want with it, sell copies etc.... If it is just the work then you can reproduce it and sell it to people who enquire about your work..... lots of options, exciting!!

i sell my prints in a limited run of 25. for about £80, A2. as a starter for ten.
but i do my printing etc..
January 16th, 2013
Congratulations! Clueless on price but wanted to tell you well done.
January 16th, 2013
whoop, well done.
think how many people gonna get in there and see that. So I'd wanna have a mount between the photo and the frame with my name legible on it. I think £80 (I think $80 is too low, thats only about £50, but maybe you can find your price between $80 and £80) sounds good, over costs, so if they are handling the costs you charge £80 straight, but if they have five drop it to £75 maybe and ten drop it to £70, 20 maybe drop to £60 but then no lower. Let them pick the frame, they'll do it to match the decor that's normal, and you'll never see them so it won't bug you. That's a great opportunity, well done.

I am not surprised at this at all. A great deal depends on what size they want the prints. Also what setting you may have had on your camera to get the best quality inlargement. I have reciently sold a few matted framed prints to some people, and charged way to little 75 80 $$ per print. They were done up quite nicely though. One thing I would make sure of is that you have a very visable watermark/name on everything you sell and also index #s on each. Remember, that some prints that make it to some magazine covers can and do go up to the high hundreds and more. It would be a shame if someone else sold one of your prints for that purpose.

Congratulations - have a look at Etsy or other photographers web sites (eg. http://www.panoramaart.co.uk/prices.html) and see what they are charging (Etsy variation is huge). You need to address the copyright/IP issue.

Congratulations!! That is a great opportunity!! Way to go!

Congratulations. I have no idea how many photographs you are selling them. Where does one get quality artwork of your caliber for $80 plus the cost of the print (which isn't much!)? I think that is a bargain price for them, considering the cost of opening a hotel and how long your photos will hang (as opposed to how often they need to change other items in the room). I stayed at a Marriott in Florida recently and they had photos in all the rooms. In my survey, I told them that it is such a beautiful location and it is a shame they don't use local artwork instead of standard photos. Regarding the frames--remember, they'll have to screw them to the wall so people don't "walk away" with your prints! Maybe that is the reason they want to supply them.
