Wide angle lens for a canon 450d

January 16th, 2013
I was hoping someone out there might have some advice on a wide angle lens. I have a Canon 450D (quite happy with it and no plans to change) and would like a wide angle lens - but have to confess to being totally confused by the options. I enjoy photography but am very much an amateur so can't justify a huge out ay. Any suggestions?

I use the Sigma 10-20mm lens. It is well worth consideration for wide-angle shots.

This is with a tokina 11 - 16 on my 500d. It all depends on your budget. I poured over the detail of each and you will find pros and cons for each.

i recently(3 days ago)--got my Canon efs-10-22 mm-wide angle lens--i have mix feelings 'bout it--u can check some of my recent water(beach) images--i don't really like the distorted effect,so i might returned it back.

@jodimuli

they're ace dude. At 10mm you're gonna get distortion i guess.

If your budget is big (it needs to be, good wide lenses aren't cheap) then go for the Canon stuff, and check out their zooms, but be aware distortion increases the wider you go, and portraits for one look dreadful under 35mm. If you're just experimenting and don't have a big budget, you can get a 28mm, or 24mm lens on ebay from the film cameras of the 1970s and 1980s and an adapter for around £20-£30. Just depends how much you need it I guess.

@jodimuli With my crop sensor at 10mm the lens can produce a tunnel like distoration. This is only noticable inside, it is good in the field with a bigger field of view.

Hard to go wrong with the Sigma 10-20mm if you're on a budget.

@abirkill do you have the f3.5 version? I am thinking about buying one.
January 16th, 2013
@gabrielklee No, I had the f/4-f/5.6 version -- I bought it a long time before the f/3.5 version came out. (I don't have either now, as I've upgraded to full-frame).

@jodimuli i think that's the lens i got and i think it just may take some getting used to... i love mine, but it's definitely a different feel... and i keep forgetting how MUCH it will get in frame... so i was finding that i would think my camera is level to the horizon and then see so much BELOW that i would second guess myself and tilt the camera up - only then it really WAS tilted up, if you know what i mean... i get distortion on my 17-85 as well when i shoot at 17... i like going wide, so i just try to compose on the assumption i will have to trim the edges a bit...

this was shot with the wide angle at 10mm... i didn't end up cropping anything out of it...

@northy****You're absolutely right, i think it's just a matter of getting used to---i'm used to my 50mm –so, this wide lens is a "culture shock" for me..i checked some images taken from this lens on other websites and i'm convinced—thanks for the tips 'tho..:)...and this image is stunning!!
