I picked up those color flash filters at a Smithsonian gift shop last year. Haven't really used them much. Just bought that bokeh-kit and am hoping it is a lot of fun during the long winter nights!
Thanks to the earlier posts about dinosaurs...... I've been trawling that site most of the evening, sadly I'm in the UK, shipping is possible, but probably expensive. I had my eye on a whole bunch of stuff, especially the bokeh kit!
@swguevin You do have kind of a valid point. I can't really see myself using those at length, the bokeh kit will probably be really fun. [besides the fact, you can use a lot of around-house-things as flash filters]
@nicolaeastwood another vote on the bokeh kit. :D
Good eye. =D
You never know if you don't check, and if it makes you happy it's okay to splurge on something once in a while. ^^
I have just ordered the bokek kit...usuing my $5 discount code from your previous post about this site. You should have $5 in your shopping cart now! @nicolaeastwood
I only bought a couple of things, and the postage was $11. I had the $5 coupon so that helped a bit http://photojojo.com/r/a62t
I find with camera equipment I only spend on what I will get the most use out of and i put this on my christmas list and am still a bit bummed that I will be buying this myself. http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/level-camera-cube/
@nicolaeastwood If you decide you want to order something [or two somethings since she put her code, too] here's another 5 dollar off promo. :D
@onie Glad I could help, you just talked me into ordering it. Also, I noticed that their shipping is super fast. My Flash bouce wasn't supposed to be here til the 30th but it came like 4 days early. They are on it. I wonder who my next dino-pal will be. :D
@phillyphotos That seems like it would be way useful to have in a kit. Pretty much for any sort of picture. My only problem with it is that my hands shake. I'd sit there and be obsessed with making the bubble sit steady. Which would prove to to be exceedingly difficult for me. xD
When it comes to camera gear, so far, I like to experiment. I'll buy something if I can afford it and it looks like something I could play with for a while. =D
what about grown up toys though? like an nd filter, lens hood, off camera flash transmitter, polerizing filter, close up filter 2x converter....just a thought.
@nicolaeastwood my phojo parcel went to post office depo, I had to pay import duty before I could collect parcel. It made it a very expensive purchase. Check somewhere like amazon first
@chewyteeth I'm looking at a lens for my macro fixation, ideally I'll be able to buy it next semester. But I like have to just experiment and have fun, I'm trying to figure out what I want to specialize in. I have a lens Hood and a fliter set [that I don't use a lot, including polarizing filter along with a macro set and a couple others]. I know I"m considering getting a remote so I can do portraits of my boyfriend and i. But that's after I get a tripod. :D
with the colored filters, you can use pretty much anything for a filter, realistically. Last year I was holding up pieces of bottles, papers, plastic, etc, in front of my flash for a filter-y effect. So I [probably] won't die with out them. I'll probably cave at some point and splurge though, knowing me.
@lisjam1 I only use flash for portraits, pictures of my dog, or photos of my fish. Or like, pictures that I feel need high contrast in camera with B/W, But, I'll probably use it more now that I have a bounce for my pop-up.
I'm all excited, I'm probably going to take it a the park or just straight up hunt down places that I know have lights. I just think it'll be cool to have in my arsenal. I carry my camera and some equipment EVERYWHERE. =D
@paign
well I reckon you'll use the bokeh filters like once. I just got a transmitter and two receivers for off camera flash, off ebay for $22. just an idea.
@lisjam1 I carry it just because, like you said, you never know when you're going to see something. I carry my Kodak [a P&S] so sometimes I'll catch a picture with that. But I'm just trying so hard to never be ill supplied for an op.
@chewyteeth I just can't see using an off-camera flash too frequently. I mainly prefer to shoot with out flash because I haven't found a way that I like. I'm just an amateur at the moment, later one when I find my craft requires more weapons in my arsenal I'll look into it. Thank you for your input
well... you can make your own bokeh filters. Aaron @grizzlysghost is very knowledgeable as to how to do them and can provide a link to you. For what you get at photojojo for $25, it seems overpriced. I considered ordering it myself because I'm lazy when it comes to tedious things like cutting out little shapes with an exacto knife, but then I thought about how often I'd use it, which isn't a lot since I'm not an "omg bokeh!" person and decided against it.
I'm on the fence about the bokeh filters. I keep seeing that I could make these things myself but that sounds like a real lesson in tedium and disaster. How much is an exacto knife anyway and then there's the part where I'd end up having to get my finger stitched back together. Yea totally leaning towards the buy the bokeh filter side of the fence.
@jsw0109 I was considering that.... but you haven't seen me with an exacto knife. xD Also, me and patience.... not really besties. I think it'll be a fun experiment, and it'll be cool to have them for christmas when I do tree pictures again. :D
@aponi I feel you there. I thought about it. I really did. But, in the end I was like "I don't like doctors or really sharp knives xD"
@godsloverphotography Those are so pretty, you've got me curious as to what you used for a light source? Was it a string of lights like for Christmas or...? :D
@jsw0109
I followed all the advice and had a go at making my own. I managed to make 2 shapes..a Christmas tree, and a fat angel. I've decided I'm not a good drawer, and even worse at cutting out little shapes. (I work in a hospital, so had a super sharp scalpel for cutting!!) Then I managed to put them at the bottom of the bag and they are very squished.
I agree the price is a bit up there, however I like to have a bit of fun, and I'm sure I'll get a bit of use out of them. @chewyteeth
Am awaiting my ND400 and ND1000 filters, but I'm sure I'll have a bit of fun withe bokeh kit. I do hope it's not as un-usable as you think!! Buyer beware off the internet :)
@paign haha i have BOTH in my cart.... i made my own bokeh kit a while ago but i like some of the cut outs they have... though mine is EXACTLY the same... i made it from the black plastic in those sleeve project folders... worked perfectly... and the flash colours i decided on the gary fong diffuser kit with the gels....
Im soooo unhelpful! LOL!
I just placed an order yesterday and used the free shipping option... I just now checked the tracking status and its already in Indianapolis... so I imagine I'll be receiving it Thursday at the latest... that is super fast.
@nicolaeastwood another vote on the bokeh kit. :D

@onie it recently took about a full four to five weeks to get a package from @peterdegraaff.
@phillyphotos Well, I suppose it would be super helpful if you use a tripod frequently. And thank you. ^^

I've posted links to the tutorial about DIY Bokeh Kit. It's very cheap make it by yourself. :D
Here's another one:
Yes, I used a string of Christmas lights for the light source. :)
thank you for your advice ^^
