Anyone had experience of purchasing from slrhut in the UK?

March 11th, 2013
I'm just wondering if anyone has purchased a camera from slrhut.co.uk in the UK. They're an American company that apparently ship to the UK and their prices are extremely affordable. I'm looking to purchase a Canon 7D. On their site it's £879 whilst on Amazon it's £1279. A big difference. I'd just like to get the low down on other people's experiences. I was also concerned about the warranty - if it would be covered under an EU warranty. Thanks.

No, but I have bought a couple of skateboards from the US, and then had to pay the customs duty, import tax and royal mail admin charge as well, would have been cheaper to buy from the UK in my case.

whats it on ebay though? I never heard from them, but it don't mean they're bad. If you're happy to get an American product then B&H ship to the UK but the postage is hefty ~I think.

Just looked £729 with 3 years warranty on ebay.

I googled and this is the first thing that popped up: http://blog.photo3.co.uk/2011/12/is-slrhut-scam-slrhutcouk-reviews.html

I am in the USA and I have never heard of this person or company - but the google search was not encouraging.

In the absence of the daylight extortion that was Jessops, bear in mind Digital Rev, as a seller. there's lots of .co.uk camera sellers around, buy a digital camera magazine and you'll see their ads. Also curries website.

@jankoos Yeah I read this review also but it wasn't quite definitive that it was a scam. You generally tend to hear about complaints from people and don't necessarily hear the good stuff.

@chewyteeth What's B&H?

I know that Nikon products bought in the US have no guarantee in the UK and have to be shipped back to the US if there is a problem but not sure about Canon. Do your homework as there is always a reason that 1 site is substantially cheaper than everyone else and it's usually bad!!

hubby bought me a camera from slrhut for christmas. he ordered a 600d, and we got the american version of it the rebel t3i. you dont pay customs as youre buying from a uk company even though they get their stuff from the states. also, this camera arrived within about 4 days i think. i can rememeber he was pretty surprised at how fast it arrived.

the only thing that could be percieved as a problem is it has an american plug with adapter, rather than an UK one, but i dont mind that. we have had no problems, but check it out as much as you can for your own peace of mind.

Hi Kareen, I've bought lenses from the US without issue, but you always got caught by Customs. I think photographic equipment from the US is still zero rated for import duty, but you will still get charged 20% VAT and Royal Mail's handling fee (which was £8 last time I had to pay it) if it's posted to you from the States.

I bought my Canon 7D from Canon's own UK eBay outlet where they sell refurbs with a one year guarantee and next day delivery. They currently have a 7D with 18-135mm lens for £899:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EOS-7D-Digital-SLR-Camera-with-18-135-EF-S-IS-Lens-Refurbished-WARRANTY-/281064392432?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item4170be46f0

My experience of their service was very good. The camera looked brand new, as did the packaging, and the guarantee is good too, as it's been back to them for a check on the sensor.

Here is an interesting conversation about them on DPReview:

@kareen
Leading US camera shop.

Kareen - if you read down on that link I sent you, there are lots of comments from people who had less than satisfactory experience with them. Perhaps not scammers but definitely beware. :-)

@jankoos @trbo thank you Jan and Travis. I think I'm trying to convince myself that they're ok to save myself around £400. In reality it looks like they're maybe a gamble too far.

@humphreyhippo Many, many thanks for this link. I actually bought by canon 400 from these eBay guys and five years later its still working fine. I think I might just get a refurbished one :)

@chewyteeth Thanks Dave. Currys website are extortion. Digital Rev looks interesting. Have you used them before?
March 11th, 2013
Kareen - I have not used slrhut but would recommend you look at Digitalrev, i recently purchased a macro lens off them and was really happy with the service......any more importantly the price !!!
March 11th, 2013
nah I use ebay!

Digital Rev do look good for prices, their reputation for customer service used to be a bit patchy but may well have improved. I used procamerashop.co.uk for my LX7 - excellent, fast service and a good price. They're currently offering the 7D body for £700.
March 12th, 2013
@automaticslim Thanks for that. Their prices are very good.

@stanners72 Did you have to pay extra custom duties or vat when ordering from Digital Rev?
March 12th, 2013
@kareen Hi, no did not have to pay any VAT/Duty
March 12th, 2013
I don't know the price but when hubby got my camera for christmas we went through Pro camera shop which looked like the best deals at the time. The service we got from them was really good and the camera arrived quickly.
March 12th, 2013
I think the issue will arise if you have a problem with the camera. Not sure that it will have a European warranty and therefore Canon may refuse to repair it under warranty.

@coolgirlsar @stanners72 @automaticslim @chewyteeth @jankoos @humphreyhippo @jase_h Thank you so much for your comments guys and gals. I've now got a much wider scope to look at in regards to where I can buy what I want at a reasonable price. Big love x
