Canvas print - color issues

April 18th, 2013
We ordered our first sets of canvas prints from two different sellers (based on deals from Google). Just got them back and are hugely disappointed with the one from a company called Fabness. The colors looked grayed out and faded. (We also had a lot of issues with their site - took over an hour to load and order the picture, because it kept having us restart.)

Here's a picture of the canvas compared to a print of a similar image as a calendar (from another printer).

And here's the original shot, as sent to the site:

Are we expecting too much or justified in sending it back?

Oh wow, that’s a huge difference. I think you’re justified in sending it back. I’ve ordered a few through Canvas on Demand and they turned out beautifully.

Totally justified!! I wonder - in the ordering process for Fabness, did you opt for "colour correction" (or something along those lines)? Sometimes they put it in as an option - they think they're "correcting" your colours for you when in actual fact you've submitted them perfectly as you wanted them without needing any changes. And sometimes the option is just part of the ordering process so you can skip over it without realising! I've almost fallen into that trap once or twice.

Wow, that is quite a difference! I had been ordering my aluminum through Aluminyze and thought they were pretty good... until I received some from Fine Art America ( http://aaron-aldrich.artistwebsites.com ) which were much better; richer color, tighter grain, better finishing, better mounting hardware, just better everything. That was my first introduction to how different results can be. I hope you get it resolved, because that fantastic color in the original shot (and calendar) needs to come through on the canvas!

I have ordered once and only once from fabness with a groupon. I thought the results were a bit oversaturated (you are dramatically under) and I thought the construction was just not as quality as what I have gotten at CanvasPop.

Just to buck the trend, I would say that both of those prints are incorrect, but the calendar print is a bigger deviation from the original as posted than the canvas print.

The canvas image seems to have a slightly cooler temperature than the uploaded photo, and is possibly slightly less saturated -- I think the effect is being emphasised by the most saturated part of the original image, the right-hand edge, being cropped off the canvas.

The calendar photo appears to just be totally the wrong colour, especially when you look at the blue of the water, and is underexposed. Again, it's hard to make an exact comparison because the calendar photo goes a lot further to the right than the source photo posted.

Only had one from them and the color was fine but thought the framing and quality was pretty weak. I think it matches the photo more so than the calendar myself. But if you are not happy- send it back for sure.

I find the calendar photo to be more off the original than the canvas. While the canvas does look a bit lighter or more washed out than the original, the calendar seems to be much warmer with more contrast, the colors seem completely different. Beautiful photo, either way! No advice on printing places, I'm afraid.

I am in Oz so would use different suppliers but some here specify what colour space your photos should be in. Most are SRGB, but for my photo books they need to be in Adobe RGB. Don't want to confuse you but it often makes a difference in the results.

I've had 4 canvas prints done from Fabness, and was happy with the product considering the price I paid. Used Scoopons for all of them. I had no trouble on the site, found the upload and ordering OK.
Yours does look quite different from the original, and I would definitely send it back, with a print of the original for comparison.

Have just realised you are in US, and I'm in Oz.....so would be a different company I think. Mine didn't come from US.

@lisabell Thanks so much for your thoughts. We got our Cafe Press orders in today, and they look totally different and much more accurate.

@pocketmouse Hmm, excellent question ... we had major issues with the whole upload process, I wouldn't put anything past them.

@grizzlysghost Thanks so much, Aaron, I hope so too! We ordered a different print (of a geyser) on metal from Cafe Press that should be arriving today, and I can't wait to see what that one looks like! Maybe I'll have to get my own fine art america site just to order prints for myself!

@phillyphotos Thanks for sharing your experience too. We also ordered from Cafe Press on another google coupon and are much, much happier with the results.

@abirkill Thanks for your thoughts, Alexis. The calendar picture is a slightly different shot a few images before, and may have been a little differently exposed for the sunset colors than the canvas print. If I had to choose between which deviation I would prefer though, I think I'd go for the calendar's vibrance, because it's much closer to my memories of the sunset!

@jannkc Thanks for sharing, Jann. I think there's a lot more subtly in the original that has gotten lost, for sure.

@breigh Thanks so much, Breigh! It was an amazing sunset, so I really don't want to lose the warm tones.

@debsulzberger Cool, thanks, Deb! I will look into that one.

@onie Thanks so much, Leonie. Ours was printed in NC, so it's too bad to hear that maybe they aren't as 'up to snuff' as other printers they use. For us, we kept uploading the picture, getting the preview where it showed you the image in context, and then when we tried to order it would tell us we didn't have any pictures selected! Sheesh.

Your photography is really a good view. WOW.
I agree that it lacks color and lights. Take them into bulk exif editor and use brighten and lighten. Then they should be better.
