Nothing days

June 18th, 2013
Hi everyone

I'm enjoying the challenge of doing the project so far but am having difficulty with the hardest part - the days where nothing happens! How do you get inspiration on the boring days where you go to work and don't do anything else? I'm fast running out of pictures of my garden but don't really have time to go anywhere.

Any ideas much appreciated!

We have just been helping another 365er with a similar issue. Something always happens, or you make something happen. You seize the moment. There is a fly on the window, a bird in the tree, or dying flower in the vase. Life goes on, but you have to open your eyes. Read these posts for some additional guidance....

I'm not sure any day could ever truly be a 'nothing' day - what about around your home? your journey to work? your workplace? - photographic oportunities are everywhere - indeed my main problem is often just chosing which of a days pics to use.

Why not pick a theme for your project - narrowing your range actually focusses the eye I think - this is my current project - as you will see, many of these are not the result of an epic trip anywhere - just documenting life around me....

I had worried about finding shots but found that there are pictures to take everywhere. You could find things in your house, out the window of your car or office window. Things in your office.

We have the June word of the day which you can find here: http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/17998/just-4-june

I have learned so much from 365 project and have become so much more observant. I hope you continue and have fun with it.

I agree with Carol. Sometimes you just have to make something happen. Look around, grab a couple of objects, arrange them, think about the shot and what you want to do with it, and shoot. You could also browse through some pictures here and see if there are different things you'd want to try and experiment with, such as light trails.

Another option is to have a personal project to work on. For an example, I know one person who is working on mushroom images, with both in "studio" and in nature images. You could choose a technique or subject or ????

Boo
there is always something to take a shot of...you have to open your eyes, look at the wonders around you and soon you will see things happenning around you all the time. xxx

When I was having a blah day, I took a picture of my gardening tools -

Also the kitchen is a great source of gadgetry.
Check out projects of Paul @paul2782 and Paul @steampowered - they both use all kinds of creative things (amazing photographers, and super talented).

What is on the northwest corner of your house that is interesting? Door nobs? broom sticks? (sounds like a movie title) Coffee cups (tea, if so inclined)?

One of the people I follow went into their yard, looked at the sky, framed it with trees and took a picture a day of the sky.

This was taken on a day when NOTHING was happening at work :-)

You let the day direct your flow - example one rainy day had me going back to a previous shot site to photographic and the subjects in the rain as opposed to afternoon light. It gave me a whole new set of parameters and challenges as well as rewards. Also, I practice framing pictures in my mind as I travel around - by doing so it makes me ready to take photos when I do have my camera.
