So my new camera arrived yesterday and it is missing the cd-rom handbook. Amazon will credit me $250.00 if i want to keep it or I can send it back and get a new one. $250.00 is hard to throw away but I am having a hard time figuring out even a simple thing like changing the date & time. My question is has the cd-rom been helpful to you, can I live without it? and please how do I change the date & time? I get to it in the menu but it is grayed out and inaccessible :(
I hate trying to learn a new camera settings, bring me back to feeling like a High School kid in algebra class :(
have you gone to the manufacturer's website to see if they have a pdf of the handbook/manual available? Also try "googling" it and see if you can find a pdf of it...
what cd rom handbook? i'm pretty sure mine came with a printed manual... plus i bought a book (which didn't cost me $250)...
the menu system on mine is enough to try the patience of a saint... i just sat down and started pressing all the buttons one afternoon to see what happened... and i'm pretty sure that's how i figured out how to set the date...
@l2lumom I tried that and am not getting anywhere. @nanalisarocks i thought it was time and today now i am not so sure @northy There is an envelope for it but no cd, I have a very thin manual but it's not much help, the manual says look at the cd :(
Is the book worth the $25.00
i dunno... it's sitting on my bedside table gathering dust... ;p
given the price of the camera, i assume ultimately the answer will be yes... but frankly, i'm just doing what i did with the canon... waiting until i desperately need to figure out how to do something and then looking it up... haven't scratched the surface of the camera's capabilities yet...
@sunshinephoto5 Hi Dawn, I had a quick google and I can see various people on the net hosting NEX manuals in dropbox etc. Take the money, keep you camera. And find the manual.
If you need a hand let me know what model NEX you have and I could help you find it if you like.
@jantan I swear by those for dummies books @frankhymus I spent time with it last night and it was not much help. But I did find a blog that suggested I put it on manual and try to get to the settings that way and it worked. No where in in the manual does it say it must be on manual mode! lol!
Again I feel like I am plowing through algebra all over again!
As a Sony alpha user, I find the menus of the NEX camera's confusing. Not to what the items mean, rather it is navigating the menus. However, I know canon users who have succesfully made the switch to Sony NEX. As stated above it seems that Sony would have the manual in PDF or available to pusrchase. Also, I have not used the programs that came on the CD's from Sony. You may want to look at a book published by Magic Lantern for Sony NEX cameras.
@chapjohn@mikehamm thank you! and since I am a life long Nikon user nothing about this camera in intuitive to me :P but i am up for the learning curve! Thanks again for your help!
@sunshinephoto5 OK. I browsed the manual, and found it quite well written. The menu system does look a little quirky in comparison to others, but nothing a few minutes work shouldn't take care of. Take your $250 from Amazon and silently thank them for a nice gift.
Hey, Dawn! =)) i personally hate hand-books =))) wahahah =) o i never used mine, I just went trough all the camera settings (not that many as it may seem=) But alternately, as many suggested already, can you just find the manual on the internet?
i pulled out the disc... at a very quick glance, the PDF manual on the website i pointed to is the same as the one on the disc... what i think you don't have is the image management software... and based on my experience with canon, you may not be able to find this online easily and download it... of course, you probably don't need that software, but if you ever wanted it, that might be a sticking point for you...
I have a Nex 5 (was not my choice of cameras but my husband bought it for me) after having it for 1 year I bought David Busch's Sony Nex 5/Nex 3. I learned more in 1 week reading the book than I did the entire year. I am always going back to the book for information. I bought it on Amazon for about 18 dollars. Then of course the more you use the camera the more you learn about it
@dmdfday@northy@mariyakey I have just spent the better part of the evening trying to load the photos onto my pc. I stupidly shot the pics today in raw and my pc won't recognize it :P I did finally get 1/2 of the pics loaded but the pics i took yesterday won't load. i am going to go have a glass of wine and chill out before I give myself a stroke!! It seems like I need the sony blah blah image converter softwear blah blah...to load the pics.Oh boy...tomorrow hopefully will be a better day!
@dmdfday mine came with a empty envelope. Amazon will credit me $250.00 so I am trying to make it work :P And for the life of me I have no idea why only today's images i could load but yesterdays i can't! i can see them on the camera, i know they are there sooo weird!

@northy @petja @l2lumom Thanks again for your help!
I never use my camera manual, always the 'For Dummies' book instead - much more user friendly. Sounds like a $250 windfall to me!
(take the money - you'll soon learn the camera - and as people say - plenty of info/books, etc out there to make keeping the 250 a great bonus)
