Creating a photography website

August 10th, 2013
Hi, I am wanting to make a website for my photography as I have been getting quite a few paid jobs lately. Where do I start? does anyone have any recommendations? (preferably free or cheap!). I would like to use it for a couple of purposes, to share recent work, to sell some images and as a portfolio. Thanks!

@bluebell I'll be following this thread as I'm interested in some tips too! I have purchased a domain name and am at a loss as to how to move forward with it!

I can recommend this: http://www.squarespace.com/stories
Easy to customize, many predefined, cool templates, no programming, great support. For reference you might check this out: http://brunnerphotography.com
have fun :-)

You may check out Wordpress http://wordpress.com/ which you can create a free website with templates. In here you can blog about your services, activities, upload pictures etc.

Another option is to use http://www.flickr.com/ which is essentially a photo sharing site. It's also free with upgrade plans.

In order to have a website without a long back slash address you have to purchase a domain name, and use a popular server. I have had my website address for years, but I was able to move it when I changed servers. I now use bluehost.com. It is cheap when you purchase 2 yrs at a time. You can import your own design, they have great customer service, and I believe they have templates as well. It's a little of a learning curve to create a site if it's your first time, but you can tweak it just the way you want. @bluebell

I use http://www.smugmug.com it can be used as a free site but I paid for a domain name & love how easy the smugmug templates are to use & customise, it's well worth checking out!

I can recommend www.jimdo.com for creating a website. I work with it and the ad-free version (pro) costs just 60 bucks a year. Not too expensive, I think ...

I use Artist Websites; couldn't be easier! http://aaron-aldrich.artistwebsites.com

Weebly.com is really easy to use and you don't have to purchase your domain name. http://albaileyphotography.weebly.com

I used Go Daddy, purchased a domain and would NOT recommend it. It is not easy to use when trying up load photos. I've paid for a year of service, but I am going to try something else.
