Where is the photographer during a wedding?

I know the real answer is depends - ask the officiant, etc.
But what do you typically do? Do you move around?
(obviously you don't want to block anyone's view)
Tomorrow is my first wedding. The church is not a very big church and so I'm not sure if it will be easy to go from the side to the middle etc.

Originally my husband was going to be the 2nd photographer. But at the last minute he has become the videographer (which is not something is has done much of (during our kids program at church). He does not have an expensive video camera (only a point n shoot designed for videos). He has a Nikon D3100.

Anywhere he wants ot be that isn't too distracting! Of course follow the guidelines of the officiant too!

Yup! I would like to know the answer too, as I have a wedding to shoot in January next year.

Having watched the (same) photographer at each of my children's weddings, he arrived very early and took some general shots of the church, flowers, arriving guests, etc, before the arrival of groom and then bride. After the bride's procession he mainly stayed at the back, but moved quietly around, taking shots with a long lens (no flash) at each main part of the service, including close-ups of the readers, members of the congregation, and so on. The signing of the register was in a side chapel, and he went forward for that.

My son was married in July - and he and his wife selected a venue that wasn't a church (it was an old restored art-deco ferry - very awesome). We had a photographer team (husband and wife).
Ahead of time, they had us send a list of family pics we wanted. We did those prior to the ceremony - including pics of the bride and groom starting with when they were getting ready. During the ceremony, they moved around, however were not visible to the guests. You wouldn't want to be in the center aisle and potentially block the view of the guests.
Are you able to get to the venue early and scope it out?
We also got shots of the cake, table arrangements, food, etc.
Best of luck, and have fun.

good luck, KB. i know you will do very well. and don't forget to charge all your batteries. that was one near mishap by the photographer at my niece's wedding three years ago. but his spare was charging in his idling car and someone had to run and get it.

From what i understand, you really want the videographer to have a chat with the photographer so they dont get in each other's way.

Where the VIDEOGRAPHER is may actually be a LOT different than where the photographer will be. There are a heck of a lot of funky things that they can do which a photographer cant.

This guy may give you some ideas - he shot my brother's wedding and we were all in awe at the finished product (which he produced on the day to show at the reception!) http://vimeo.com/jasonmagbanua
