(Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere -- I did a quick search, but couldn't find it here.)
There are various places on the web where you can find books on photography. But one of the best is the non-profit organisation Internet Archive. Just type 'internet archive' in your browser to get there. (To put your mind at rest, this is a genuine, above-board, legal site -- and it's absolutely free of charge!)
Among the goodies there are some great standard reference works -- and no, I don't mean those hundred-year old texts that Gutenberg excels at making available. These are current, useful (and sometimes expensive-to-buy-in-hard-copy) books. In a few cases, I've even downloaded some stuff I already have in hard copy to my smartphone to give me more convenient access when I'm away from home (or simply can't be bothered going upstairs to retrieve a book from the shelf!).
Here's a sample list of some of the stuff that might be of interest to others (and which is available in full PDF versions of the printed edition, as well as in html, epub and kindle formats):
Langford. Basic Photography, 7th ed. (Focal Press, 2000)
Langford. Advanced Photography, 7th ed. (Focal Press, 2008).
Davis. Creative Black and White (Wiley, 2010).
Peres (ed.). Focal Encyclopedia of Photography (Focal Press, 2007)
Prakel. The Visual Dictionary of Photography. (AVA Publishing, 2010)
Galer. Photography Foundations for Art & Design, 4th ed. (Focal Press, 2007)
Hirsch. Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age. (Focal Press, 2008)
Busch. Mastering Digital DSLR Photography.(Course Technology, Cengage, 2012.
Beardsworth. Advanced Digital Black & White. (Lark, Ilex Press, 2007).
There's much more available too, but I've kept this list to the stuff that's been published in the last 10 or so years.
