Congratulations Hope on winning the camera settings challenge with her gorgeous manual shot and thanks for asking me to host the Camera Settings Challenge this week.
Do some of the camera settings intimidate you? Do you want to learn how to develop your photography skills and learn how to use your camera effectively without always going back to the “auto” function? These challenges are for you!

I can’t actually find that this one has been done before. If it is I apologise…but we’ll do it again anyway. I’ve chosen a very simple and easy one for you based on some funny comments that I’ve been reading on the site. It appears that there is some software around which will give you nice starbursts. Well forget about it! Instantly! Right now!
Your challenge for this week is to take a shot with starbursts in it. Now that does mean that you have to go out at night, with a tripod and a camera so please take someone with you if you feel insecure in these circumstances.
The trick to good starbursts is to shut your aperture down. F16 or smaller. This of course means that those night shots take even longer to take than they already did. So choose your spot, (somewhere with lights of course). Set up your tripod, set your camera (now that everyone has tried on full manual this shouldn’t be a problem), and start shooting. If you don’t feel confident on full manual then set your camera to aperture priority mode. Bear in mind that some lenses will give you more interesting flares than others depending on how many flangey thingoes (technical term) they have. You might like to try this with several different lenses to see how they differ.
Just a hint: If you don’t have a remote cable, please use the self timer on your camera. There’s nothing spoils a night shot like camera shake and that’s what you’ll get if you put your finger on the shutter release.
One more thing: Just to make this totally fair…no sharpening up those flares…post your shots as they come out of the camera.
Tag your photos CSC-36-Seeing-Stars and post them to this thread if you’d like.
The challenge remains open until midnight November 23rd Australian EDST.
@swilde At least your not on the half-hour time shift :-) Of course, I sometimes like to tell people that we don't go to daylight saving time, we just shift to Mountain Standard time.
That would be Friday, November 22, 2013 at 6:00:00 AM PST (UTC-8)
@byrdlip thanks for working that out.
