Help! What's wrong?!

December 26th, 2013
So, I got my first DSLR maybe 2 weeks ago or so. A Nikon D3200. But ever since I got it, it periodically freezes. This especially happens on initially turning it on, or after taking a photo, or when reviewing a photo. I will either get an hourglass symbol, a blank screen, or it will just freeze on the current picture.

When this happens, it freezes for about a minute and there is nothing that will change the screen. Even if I turn the camera off the screen displays whatever it was stuck on.

Is this a camera problem? My sister thought maybe it was an SD card problem. (And, one time my camera did give me a message about the SD card being broken or incompatible or something). I am using a SanDisk Extreme 16GB, 45MB/sec, class 10.

Do I need to get my camera replaced though amazon or do I just need a new SD card???

Oh, also, this happens whether I have formatted the SD card or not....

Thanks for your help!!!

Do you have another SD card to try? ( just a little whisper - you have a Nikon camera, not that it makes any difference to your current problem.)

@sianipops No, I am thinking about buying another to see if that's the problem. And of course I have a Nikon! I must have had Canon on my mind when I typed up there. How embarrassing! :)

Format your card and try again. Or try another card. The other option to to see if you need a camera firmware update. I'm sure Nikon has a site for that.

Hey we've all been caught typing something quickly, posting and then realizing the error ( I think there is a thread on here about funniest auto corrected comments). Initially reading your post I was going to say my Canon will have the hourglass or say waiting - but figured it was the sd card being too slow when doing some longer exposures, but a 45MB/sec shouldn't be giving you such frequent problems. It would just be easier to check SD card issue vs sending it back. Hope it works out and just to reduce embarrassment - i got a mirrorless camera today - it had shipped from Japan and all menu options were in Japanese - I had already sent an email to store as a quick online search said if bought from Japan the only language option would be Japanese! Needless to say minutes after sending email I found language options.

I'd try a different card first as well. Did you buy the original card from a reputable supplier? There's a huge market in fake SanDisk cards that show problems like this, and the fake cards and packaging are virtually indistinguishable from the real versions even with a side-by-side comparison.

If you've taken a number of shots the camera may be tied up waiting to write them to the card. That explains the hourglass, which is just a sign to say that the camera is busy. It does sound a bit like a card problem but I'd format the card and see if it still happens.

Perhaps the card as others have said. Have you thought to remove the card and try to read/write to it from your PC? Or just buy a new fast Class 10 one, they are not expensive.

The computer seems to have no problem with it, and I format it each time I put it back in the camera.

Did you take pictures then delete some and continue to take pictures? Use a card reader to download the images to your computer, then reformat the card in the camera.

As stated above use brand names that can be pronounced! PNY can not be pronounced! Or any three letter names of cards.

Nikon and SanDisc both direct from Amazon.

Took it into a photography store today and found that the problem is with the camera itself. Luckily Amazon's exchange policy is easy and pretty painless.

Glad to hear you found out what the problem was - things like that can be very disconcerting - my suggestion would have been to have downloaded the latest firmware from the Nikon website. Anyway, happy shooting - you've got a great camera there!

@pistonbroke Thanks for your input. I checked on the firmware too and I was all up-to-date.

Nikon D3200 issues. I was scheduled to photograph and outdoor event, temps being in the teens. My camera froze up and it was stuck on an hourglass icon. I removed the battery and sd card. I reformatted the sd card and still the same issue. I missed the whole event. The camera was sent in to Nikon a few months ago for this same issue. What to do?

My firmware is all up to date also. :(

In the past I had an issue when I used my Nikon D5100. I found out it was an SD card issue. I use Scandisk Ultra and it always works for me.

I am using a Scandisk Extreme 32gb. I will try to get another sd card. This one is fairly new. Thank you Kathy Burzynski.

When I first got me D3200 I used a TDK Brand memory card, took 600+ photos perfect no issues, when that memory card was full I bought a Sandisk 16gb SDHC card, then the issues stared, freezing when I took photos, freezing when viewing photos etc. I thought it was an issue with the card so bought another Sandisk card but 8gb this time, same problems, lots of camera freezing, bought a TDK 8gb SDHC card like I did when I bought the camera, works perfect, no freezing at all, maybe Sandisk and Nikon have an issue with each other? Definitely going to stay with TDK SDHC cards from now on, and before you ask, I don't work for TDK :)

Hi, I have had probs with panasonic camera freezing while using Sandisk card. I never had issues until using this card so I agree that it is likely a memory card prob. I sure hope so since I am going to buy a lexar card and pray my camera works again!! This forum is really helpful btw. I just wasted $80 on a camera repair place that gave me no help whatsoever...
