What is your handiest photography gadget?

January 11th, 2015
Ok, so I am a real gadget lover. While many gadgets are useless, some are worth their weight in gold.

We all have cameras, lenses and our own skill, but I would like to know what the handiest gadget is you have to help with your photography?

For me, I am loving the loupe that I bought recently. This helps me to see my camera screen in the brightest of light. Worn on a lanyard around my neck, I just bring it to the camera when I want to see the shot I just took, check the histogram, etc. Saves me looking for a shady spot instead!

So what gadget makes your photographic life easier?

My giga T pro II remote... That combined w the tilt and swivel screen on my camera make life so much easier when it comes to selfies...

My iphone wifi app, I can use it as a remote (I can see the image, focus and expose all from the phone) and can also upload images from my camera to my Iphone. Love it :)

@mummarazzii I really need to invest some time in learning that app...
January 11th, 2015
@mummarazzii Oh... this sounds cool. Can you tell us the name of that app?
January 11th, 2015
@northy @catwhiskers not sure if other models have the same sort of app but the one I use is the EOS remote app.

@mummarazzii THANKS! This looks terrific!

Tripod. Don't leave home without it.

My only gadget is my camera, ha!

My favorite is also the EOS remote app, but I will definitely be looking into the loupe you mentioned! That is something that would be very useful. There have been tons of times where its super bright out and I'm like "Well...I hope at least one of these turned out because I can't tell.." Ha!

My Velbon Super Mag Slider. Fancy name for a really cool focus rail for macro. It makes focus-stacking less of a trial and error operation. :-)

My tripod & Giga T remote - unfortunately the one thing the 7D mkII is lacking is wifi so can't use the EOS remote app!!!

Ribbet 'True Vintage' post processing. I'm addicted to it.

My Black Rapid strap and Manfrotto tripod. The strap lets me carry my camera over one shoulder more comfortably than hanging on my neck and still be instantly available to grab a shot and the available bottom plate adapter means I can undue one hook and have it on the tripod in a couple of seconds.
January 11th, 2015
@kiwisnapper the battery charger - can't do anything without it!
January 11th, 2015
aside from the usual, tripod, extra batteries, stopwatch, overall i would say a small flashlight. can cast interesting light patterns, handy when setting up a shot, gear checks, all kinds of times. i use a small streamlight, it is bright, easy to handle, and durable.
January 11th, 2015
Absolutely, definitely the remote! Also handy with the swivel screen, like @northy said.

My Yongnuo remote release.

remote absolutely

Pete - behave

+1 for loupe
also eye fi card + iPad works wonders

I only have one extra gadget (besides tripod) - my remote shutter release and I use that a lot. would love to get more toys, believe me, but having caviar dreams on catfish income doesn't bode well :)
January 12th, 2015
Got to be the EOS Remote app for me too... I love being able to use that, what a difference!
January 13th, 2015
I just bought a tripod and remote shutter release. Haven't dabbled with the latter yet, but am totally crazy about the tripod!!
January 13th, 2015
Remote shutter! Love a remote:).
January 13th, 2015
@gardencat I've looked at the Black Rapid straps a little. I often wear my neck strap across the shoulders, but then it is a pain to get the camera to my face for a picture...
What model strap do you have?
January 13th, 2015
remote lol
January 13th, 2015
@ludgate I can vouch for the Black Rapid straps as well - the ones with the camera are horrible! In my case, I have the Curve. I had to buy the tripod attachment separately, the one that comes with the strap doesn't swivel.
January 13th, 2015
@kiwisnapper Ah. Yes, I was curious how it works with a tripod. Works well, with the attachment, I assume?
January 14th, 2015
@ludgate Sure does. The tripod attachment has a swiveling D ring, whereas the one that comes with the strap is fixed. I did have to drill out the base plate that attaches to the tripod a little bit, but that was easy.
January 14th, 2015
A piece of closed cell foam just big enough to sit on. Whether I'm sitting or kneeling on it, I get more and better shots from low angles when I'm not in pain.
January 14th, 2015
@ludgate I have an older model which I don't think they make anymore but it is a very basic one and I think the Curve that they sell now is pretty similar.
I too had to buy the special tripod attachment base plate separately but mine fits the tripod fine, without any additional drilling or modifiying.
