Why is the Filter Gallery not available in PS for photos that are brought over from LR? In LR, when I choose "Edit Photo in Adobe Photoshop" the filter gallery is greyed out. There are times that I'd like to possibly apply some of those filters after I've done the other editing I wanted to do and then send the photo back to LR. The only way I can find to access that filter gallery is to open the photo in PS directly from the hard drive file, but at the point that I decide I want to try one of the filters, I'm already in PS having edited directly from LR. In addition, if I open the photo in PS directly from the hard drive in order to use the filter gallery, I can't export it back into LR, and I do like to finish my photos and export them as jpegs from LR.
I had the same problem. Apparently some filters are 8 bit only, some are 8 or 16 and a few are 32 bit so you need to check the mode your photo is in.
Hope that helps
@cindyloo@thistle yup - it's an 8 bit vs 16 bit thing... Possibly this only arises when you shoot raw... Or possibly it's a default setting issue... I think you can set up PS to default to 16 bits vs 8 bits somewhere along the way
@thistle@cindyloo@northy So, are you saying that when I "export" to PS from LR, I should make sure it's at 8 or 16 bits, not 32, and then the filter gallery should be available?
@shesnapped I would export to PS as you always do... If you want to use a greyed out filter, then once you're in PS go to image, adjustment and mode and switch to 8 bits then... You won't always have to do this and i think it can affect image quality in some cases, so I would only switch to 8 bits where truly needed...
At any rate, that's what I do... I'll be interested to hear if others have a different way to do it...
Ok.My apologies, as I completely fell asleep.lol
I pull up the photo in LR right click on it, then "edit in PS". When PS comes up I receive the message " this document contains 16 bit layers, which are not supported in photoshop Elements. Consider either flattening the document, which will allow only limited editing capability, or converting it ti 8 bit color depth, which will maintain layers and still support millions of colors". I hit convert depth amd it works fine. :)
@deborah63 That happens for me also, but only when I use the 'Edit in PS' from LR. I don't think it does that when I open the photo in PS straight from the hard drive.
@cindyloo oh sorry, i've got no idea about PS elements, i Use PS CC
@shesnapped if you right click on the folder in LR, there should be an option to synchronise the folder. Click on that and you'll see thumbnails of any new images. Select, hit ok just like you would a new import

Under file settings choose PSD and Profoto RGB / 16 bit if you want to the maximum possible colour space
Dont select image resizing or anything else... except maybe post processing. Open in PS
