Question Moving from LR5 to LR6CC

April 22nd, 2016
I just downloaded LR CC (cloud version) Lightroom 6 to my computer. When I opened it, it asks me to upgrade my catalogue and it will move previews and files to the new catalogue. Is there anyone who has done this -- is there anything I need to be aware of (or beware of) re losing my photos/catalogue information.
I can no longer open LR5 or the LR 5 catalogue.
Very very worried at the moment but hoping this is just a normal part of updating to CC from resident on my computer.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can shed light on this!

Taffy I did it a long time ago. Well at least a year. But the most important thing is to have a good back up. My problems came when I tried to move from my old computer to my new one. But I conquered that too by searching on line. There is always a YouTube that can help you.

@joansmor Do you mean a backup of the catalogue? It always asks me to back up each day and I indicate yes. Then, when I create the new catalogue, would I then give it a new name which would protect the original catalogue but create the new one?

See if this helps. The top is about Elements but go down the page and you can see from another LR. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/import-photos-various-sources.html

You know the important thing I learned is your photos are separate from your catalog. Remember that adjustments in LR are not done on the photo. So if you open a picture from you file in another program it won't have the LR adjustments. The adjustments you have made, the keywords you attach etc, etc are in the catalog. The catalog knows which pictures you have in your catalog and if you move the pictures you can direct the catalog to that place. I have my pictures on a external drive now and moved my catalog there too. It works better that way. The cloud is an expensive thing for me. I have to back up the external hard drive to another harddrive for protection. But understand the difference between the pictures and the catalog helps me understand how to back it up. When you are backing up the Catalog it is just that the catalog you are backing up not your pictures.

@joansmor Right...that's what worries me. I have the photos on their drive and backed up to my main storage drive. But the catalogue is where I have all the work I've done. What I think is the case is that if the catalogue is created under a new name, I should be okay because I'll have the old one, and can remove LR6 if I have to. Just having trouble taking the next step to say 'update'!

hmmm... i know it was a bit harrowing in LR land for me when i got a new laptop, but i think it was pretty seamless when i upgraded to LR CC... although i do think i spent a bit of time on a chatline with adobe trying to get a few things ironed out... hope you get it sorted without too much hassle!

@taffy When you upgrade it creates a new file so you keep your old catalog.

I ran LR5 and LRCC for ages where I had the original file and the second file with the -2 extension on it. This year is the first year I have completely dropped LR5.

If you like just make a copy of your catalog file and open/upgrade that one so you have the original one untouched.

When you say all your changed are dont in the catalog what it actually does if you have it saving correctly is that it embed the information into each of the files or it creates a second file with the meta data in it so you dont need the catalog as when you import into a new one it will read that information from the file.

@joansmor @agima @northy

Thank you! I now have a copy of my original LR catalogue and everything has imported seamlessly (so far as I can tell) into LR6CC. I appreciate your encouragement and logical way to go forward.
