27 THOUSAND photos later....

Well, it has taken some time, and sweat, and tears, but I seem to have finally recovered most of the photos I lost when I dropped my external hard drive, minus September and some of August of this year. Contrary to what I thought, I did NOT have a backup of that drive at home. I certainly set up that backup to include any connected devices, but somehow it didn't happen. Not sure what went wrong, but I guarantee that I'll be looking at my backups from here on out to make sure they're happening as intended.

Fortunately, as I was swapping drives and setting up new ways to store photos, I had at one point transferred all the photos to the big drive, and a Deep Scan by the EaseUS recovery program was able to find them. Let me recommend that program if you ever need it, tho I hope you never do! I found that many recovery programs will let you download and scan with a trial version and then, if it finds what you're looking for, you purchase the program in order to do the actual recovery. EaseUS was the 3rd program I tried before the photos could be found.

Word to the wise: Back up your photos and MAKE SURE the backups are working!

Now I just have to figure out a way to get them organized and back into LR, preferably in date order again!!!!

goodness - what an ordeal! so glad you managed to retrieve them all... i'm paying for a service to back up to the cloud, but i never really check to make sure everything is properly there... i probably should... years ago i lost all of my first digital photos to a computer crash and it still makes me sad to think of it...

Wow. Glad you managed to get most of them back. I'm currently in the process of backing up my entire system. It was set up to do automatically but it has not been done since we moved way back in June.

@Weezilou A new low? When I realized the backups hadn't been working, I laid my head down on my desk and cried!

So glad you got all your photos recovered. I need to remember this. I still have some photos on an old computer. I think I backed them up, but we can't find the cord to the backup drive. I may need this to recover my pictures from the computer hard drive, if my husband can't get it to work.
