Teleconverters....?

April 2nd, 2017
This hasn't been in the topics for a few years so I'm wondering what your thoughts are on teleconverters. Im considering one for my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens. I've ruled out the TC-20EIII 2x converter as it seems it renders most lens to manual focus. But the TC-14E or TC-17E? My biggest concern is with my camera itself , its a d5000, can my old camera handle this? But even if you don't shoot Nikon....whats your experience with teleconverters in general...are the worth the $? Any thoughts would be helpful!

I had the 14E for the 70-200 Nikon lens, using the d600. In the end, I didn't find it all that helpful except in situations where there was a lot of light, as you lose a stop or two when you add the teleconverter. So it sort of depends on what you had in mind for its use. You'll definitely need a tripod with it, from my experience, as it's long and awkward to hand hold.

I don't have a Nikon, but my I have a 1.4 converter for my Canon. I hardly ever use it. I find the pic are a bit soft and it is hit and miss with the auto focus. I use is on very rare ovations. It there is something really far away and it it still, like a moose standing in a field, it can be helpful. But I generally have to use a tripod too, otherwise my pics are a bit soft for some reason
