How to get started in Lightroom?

May 8th, 2017
Hi all Lightroom users, I please need help! April was extremely helpful so far, but I am not there yet. It's all about the size in which to export. I tried a few options, one being 1.025 pixels and 240 resolution, It looks so small on the screen and does not seem right! I then opted for 2.200 and resolution 240, which looks much better but is still rather small. Is this the normal size for viewing on a pc screen? I would appreciated any advice as I would love to get started. Thanks in advance 😉

Hi Diana, For uploading to the web I use 2048 pixels on the long edge, and 96 pixels per inch and quality 91. https://www.lightroompresets.com/blogs/pretty-presets-blog/15402065-exporting-images-for-print-web-and-facebook might be helpful too

@ludwigsdiana The web only displays 72 dpi so in Lightroom when I export I use 3,000 for the long edge no matter if I'm exporting 1:1, 3:2 or 4:3 with a resolution of 72 dpi at 80 percent quality for JPG. The 80% quality stop the images from being screen captured and blown-up for copying as well as the 72 dpi.

If your prime purpose is web or PC monitor presentation the dpi setting is irrelevant to the "quality" (or the size) of the image display. The pixels in the image file will be presented on screen according to the resolution of your display. The dpi information embedded in the jpeg is only relevant if you are printing or otherwise use a device that is capable of varying how tight in the pixels can be rendered.

@frankhymus Maybe you could please also tell what the difference is if I post at 1.200 pixels or 3.000. I only post to 365, when I look on my screen it appears so small at 1.200. Does it make a difference on 365? Mayne I should just post the 2 recommended ones and see the difference for myself! I so appreciate your input

@ludwigsdiana 365 will resize to a maximum of 1024 pixels on the long side for display. If you look at "sizes - view all" on the panel on the right of your gallery view, you will see "large" which is the size shown in your gallery view and "main" which is in your "365" feed. In your project, you will also see " original" which is the full size you uploaded. In other people's project you won't see "original" and can't get at the uploaded large sizes.

I used to resize all my uploads to 1024 because the old resizing/resampling algorithms here lost a lot of sharpening, but it appears that Ross has significantly improved that so I don't bother anymore. I resize to about 2,000 now, mostly out of a courtesy to Ross to save space.
