What is Your Favorite Lens?

January 18th, 2011
I've seen a few discussions about lens suggestions and favorite cameras, but not much about lenses. Some simply have the kit lens that came with the camera, so this would be a good time to sell someone on a new lens.

Very simply, what is your favorite lens and why?

My favorite lens is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. It's my favorite because I can still shoot handheld shots around 1/60 exposure up to 40 minutes after sunset, which contributes to a lot of the twilight photos I post on here.

My favorite lens is my Canon 28mm f/1.8. I like it because on a 1.6x crop body it gets me pretty close to the classic 50mm focal length. And like you, I love it because I can do handheld shots in low light. That's essential when you're trying to snap pictures of the kids in the house without much lighting!

Canon 50mm f1.4. I love the sharpness and bokeh this lens produces...not to mention being able to take great photos under low light. This has been my full-time lens since I got it (my other is a Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro). I broke my first 50mm f1.4 after a week (I know...clumsy me!) and I missed it so much, I bought another one.

My fave is the one I have with me. I know it sounds cliche, but I shoot on the fly, and I don't take a bag with me.

Well considering I only have my stock 18-55mm lens, and a 50mm f/1.8- I would definately have to say the 50mm hands down.

I also love my Canon Ef 50mm 1.4. It is the easy one to carry with me all the time.
I do love my 35mm f/2 that I switch sometimes to change perspective, but if I have to choose one of the so many lenses, the 50mm is definetely my favorite.

Indoors......35mm 1.8
Outdoors......70-300mm VR
Both are equally awesome for different reasons. You just can't beat a 300mm zoom when you are outside and the versatility of the 35mm is unmatched!!

Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens. It just does everything. No need to constantly be changing lenses.

@jasonbarnette I'm with you on the 50mm 1.8. It's sharp sharp sharp! Love it. I have the 18-55 kit lens that came with the D50, which is also pretty good. I also have the 70-300 non VR lens. It's ok up to about 200mm. If anyone has compared the VR version to this version, please let me know that you think. I need something to shoot between 200-400,

I'm with the 50mm f1.4 crowd. Bought one for $50 for my canon few years back, has to be the best $50 I ever spent camera wise, well other than the $50 I paid for my first SLR! Love the massive aperture. Hate using flash so it's perfect for indoor and outdoor. The 1.5' focus is a bit of a drawback though.

I have to go with my Canon 50mm 1.8 as well. I feel like it allows me to take more creative shots than other lenses that I have. Definitely fun to play with.

I like them all. I'm especially fond of the primes but my 17-55 is probably on the camera most of the time.

Depends on the day .... currently on my camera is the Canon 60 mm f/2.8 macro - a lens I have a wonderful love affair with ...

But we're in a bit of a love triangle with the 50 mm f/1.4 too ... so it all comes down to what day and what time of that day you ask me :P

right now it is my Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/1.8....love.love.love!

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX.

Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II. It is incredibly sharp, produces lovely contrast and colour, gives that gorgeous, creamy bokeh so many desire, and controls DOF like nothing else with its wide aperture and superb AF. It isn't perfect, but I'd take it any day over my 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, 24-70 f/2.8 L, or any nifty fifty I've owned (and I do love nifty 50's). The only other lens I've used that's come close is the 'Blad 80mm - and I think, if I used it more (I have to rent it when I want it), it might knock my 85 off the top spot. ;)

my 10-22mm canon UWA is awesome!

Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD (for Canon)

It can depend on what I'm shooting but at the moment it's my Canon 50mm F1.8. In the summer when my eldest son is playing with the sprinkler though it becomes my tamron 70 - 300mm lens... I then don't get wet taking photos of him.:D

Im sure your suprised to get a response on an old discussion BUT i saw you like the nikon f/1.8, and was wondering what your thoughts were between the 50mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 if you had any thoughts about them at all. do you think its worth paying the extra 400 odd dollars for the 1.4 compared to the 1.8?

thanks :)

i'd have to say my nikon 35 f/1.8
love the speed of it, the bokeh it creates, the sharpness of the pictures, and just about everything....i've rarely taken it off since i got it a month ago

however, i still also love my kit lens....but i feel i have more creative control with the 35...

i'm also fond of my lensbaby, but i don't use it all that often...
