Is processing the makeup of the photography world?

February 27th, 2011
This is not a post about hating on processing, I always process. This morning I posted a SOOC (Straight Out Of the Camera) that was similar to my previous one. It was hard, I felt sort of naked, exposed, vulnerable. And It made me think of my sister who wont leave the house without makeup. Being a boy I used to think that was silly. Now I think I get it. Processing for me is like her makeup.

Sorry SOOC stands for straight out of the camera.

What's funny is nearly all digital cameras process images themselves, so nothing is really "SOOC." Saturation, sharpening, compressing to jpg...

People forget that photos have always been processed, it's not something that is just a digital phenomenon. What do you think people do in a darkroom? A lot of the things done in photoshop are done in a darkroom with negatives as well. However, there's not the "fake HDR" option in a darkroom or "put a tree growing out of someone's stomach" option.... which might not be a bad thing...

Cam
Thanks, I admit I was mystified about what SOOC meant.
I am wary of processing as many amateur attempts seem to detract from the image. But I have started to play around a bit after comparing RAW with JPEG images and realising the camera is doing a lot of processing by default.

@hmgphotos @ukcam Right Heidi. In my case I have been trying out the vivid setting on my camera.

@hmgphotos Precisely!!!! Can't agree more. Good example is Ansel Adams!
There is no such thing as unprocessed SOOC.

Am I alone in generally preferring photos with minimum post processing? Are photos that have been post processed a different art form? Cropping is usually as far as I usually go.
