To get out of the friends bubble, what I always do after uploading a picture is going to latest in the browse section. There I pick the photo that strikes me most from the set and comment upon it.
Who is whith me on doing this regurlarly?
Sometimes a discussion thread is put up here to go to the latest page and show the picture that caught your attention, tagging the photographer so they get a notification.... this encourages people to look around on the latest page and gives the person whose photo gets featured a little boost, perhaps you could start one every so often. :)

@olivetreeann Thank you Ann! And as a newbie, I am very much in favour of this practice. I’ve been trying to follow and comment on other new folks, but I like this idea too!
