Turning back?

April 21st, 2011
I all of a sudden would rather have a little point and shoot....is this a bad emotion since I have a wonderful canon rebel? I started wondering if others have a DSLR and a point and shoot. I have a trip coming up and I felt like taking my expensive dslr down to the hotel pool for a few shots of my kids in the pool was risky business but just a point and shoot would do the job...am I being selfish? Do you all take your DSLR everywhere point and shoot people take their cameras?

Oh, I'm the opposite. I abandoned those things the second I got my hands on my Canon. I havea waterproof one for rainy days (literally :p) but otherwise I haven't looked back. Also not selfish; just... responsible I guess :) do what works for you.

On my recent trip to San Francisco from Virginia I took my Canon D95 P&S and the bulkier PS SX20. I ended up never using the SX20 even though it takes better long distance shots. I just decided the compact portability of the P&S was more important than lugging the heavier camera on walking tours. Just my experience.

I have a rebel but also have a point and shoot. Although mostly I am in love with my dslr, sometimes I do love to just tuck my point and shoot in my pocket and go.

I don't think you're being selfish , I would like a point and shoot too . The DSLR is a little bulky to take everywhere , and times like that with the kids near the pool or at the beach it would be great to have a point and shoot .

I miss having a point and shoot - my phone more than matches the quality of most but is too slow.

A P&S has a great sense of immediacy and lack of worry, you chuck it in a pocket and nobody gives a damn if you're using it.

SLR's automatically garner attention either as a tourist or people asking about photography - it seems to be a subject nearly everybody has something to say about...

I don't take mine everywhere, I bring when I plan to or when I'm working.

I would gladly have a P&S on me at all times, I used to in fact, but it eventually succumbed to living with me...

I have two point and shoots, and two DSLR bodies. I have a tiny, slim Kodak M1033 that I use when I go out with friends (not bulky, and wouldn't be totally heartbroken if it got lost or broken). Then I have a Canon SX20 that is a bridge camera. I rarely use it, but it's nice for video. For DSLRs have a Nikon D80 and D300. D300 is the bulky, big camera I only really use when I'm seriously shooting. D80 often ends up thrown in my purse. I don't really care about carrying around a DSLR, I'm use to big cameras. Oh, and then I also have my Droid phone, which has a damn good camera.

Long story short, I often have 1-3 cameras on me at all times, in my purse...

I kept my little Nikon P&S and take it and my D80 with me when I travel instead of carrying around my big camera all the time. The quality is great and it just slips over my shoulder in my little carry bag with lots of room for extra rechargeable. I don't look at it as going backwards at all. You use what camera suits you at the time. Now that I have an iPhone, I'm hooked on the camera apps!! I've been using my iPhone more than both my other cameras lately. It's whatever strikes my mood that day.

I've been using a point and shoot and iphone since I broke my DSLR in Jan. And even though I'm waiting till I can afford a new DSLR I've found it ok. I suppose it depends what kind of shots you want to take. Before I broke my DSLR I took it everywhere, but then I always had my P&S and phone too.

I'm lucky enough to now have two DSLR's a Canon T1i and a Canon 5D Mk II, and I don't leave the house without the 5D in my trunk packed safely in its pelican case with all my speedlites, lenses, and cleaning supplies, but if I'm going to somewhere there might be a chance of risk to the camera of if I'm travelling then I'll grab the T1i with a UV filter. I feel the same way sometimes, there are some instances where you just don't want to risk the camera for anything, right? Buy a second (better) DSLR and then the Rebel becomes the all-arounder, I'd suggest going 7D if it's an option, it's a very fast camera with focal points out the yin-yang and a master flash built in, then you can use your Rebel anywhere you feel uncomfortable. :)

I have both a P&S and DSLR, and take one of them with me every day. Which one depends on what I have planned, or how I feel, or how much snow we are going to get, or, or, or.

i have my canon 30d for when my intent is to take photographs and then my iphone and a fujipix p&s for snapshots.

Oh, I hear you. I use a Rebel, and sold my P&S nearly a year ago. But I want to get another one to replace it - I miss the portability and see lots of great shots on here taken with a P&S. I kinda want an iPhone too - just for the camera apps. ;)

i'm now vacationing in Florida-i have both my P&S and DSLR with me but honestly,i prefer to use the P&S It's light, compact and fun !!

Years ago all I used was an SLR and I lugged it around everywhere. When I had children I just couldn't be bothered with carrying it all, changing lenses etc so I down graded to a bridge camera. These days I can't even be bothered carrying that so I downgraded again to a P&S and I take it everywhere with me - light, easy to use, great camera.

I loved my Canon Powershot. I miss it every day. I hate lugging around my Canon 20D - it's a pain in my rear and gets in the way more than it helps me achieve shots I'd like. I primarily shoot with an iPhone now ...

All I have is a point and shoot, but I would LOVE a nicer camera. I think you should do whatever makes sense to you. I understand the risks of taking an expensive camera to a pool with kids. Switch back and forth if that's what makes sense to you.

I am a crazy woman juggling cameras. I have a small P&S, a big zoom P& S, and a Canon Rebel. Both my P&S's fit in my purse, but I often have my SLR camera bag too. I find that I prefer each of them for different kinds of shots. I am still learning to shoot with my DSLR, so my macros on it suck. I find the little P&S better on macros. I also like the little P&S for it's extra wide angle - great for holding the camera out to take a group shot and fit everybody in! The big P&S has an awesome 840 optical zoom, so it comes in handy for birds, but I have lately been looking at other 365 bird shots and realizing I need to use my DSLR and get a better lens. Am I rambling? I agree with you that sometimes the portability is so nice that I leave the big DSLR behind. Oh, and - I'm so excited! I just ordered a camera bag that looks like a purse! Perhaps when it arrives, I will be able to carry my DSLR without being so obvious!

I have a Rebel and a small Powershot. My Powershot is usually always in my purse and travels to outings where my Rebel would be just a bit too cumbersome. No shame in wanting both! They can serve alternate purposes. Plus, I can let my husband and son use the Powershot, since I'm protective of my Rebel and accessories! LOL!

I have a Canon Powershot G10 which isn't really small but small enough to fit into my purse or (large) coat pocket . It's a bridge camera with a lot of possibilities for manual ISO, aperture, lighting etc. A month ago I was dead set on buying a DSLR but as I take my camera everywhere and go for street shots and public transport shots a lot I have decided not to upgrade. My camera is starting to fall apart at the seams and if/when it breaks down I will buy a Powershot G12.

My Panasonic Lumix TZ-20 goes EVERYWHERE with me (and I even have 2 others for the "i'm really gunna batter you about" days) and actually in some instances when I have my DSLR as well, I favour my P&S shots. I wouldn't trade my P&S for a zillion pounds! (well, only to buy a new one!!). DOn't see it as a downgrade, see it as an opening to do new and different things. I go running with mine in my back pocket so get out and about and still manage to take shots, street shots are lots easier with P&S, some of my best macros are with my P&S too! I took my P&S on all my big adventure hols this year where i would've liked my DSLR but there weren't many shots I missed as a result! DO IT!! :o)

I love my Canon DSLR but I want a point and shoot for the very same reason... I want to be able to go near or even in water with my camera... I am planning to buy one soon.

I have my faithful 3 year old little Nikon Coolpix S200 which is always in my pocket or handbag just in case, but I also have my Canon 400D which I love with a passion, I just can't get the quality of shots with my P&S that I can with the Canon.
That said, I've got some gorgeous shots with the Nikon that I just wouldn't have got with the Canon as I don't have it with me all the time (although I do have it on me most of the time when I'm not at work). I guess if you don't want to lug around a big camera, getting a P&S would definitely be worthwhile, I wouldn't be without either of mine!

I have both but I have practically abandoned my p&s now. I hate picking it up. It is a great camera though and the shots from it are amazing but I just love the freedom I have with my DSLR and being able to make my photos how I want them rather than relying on the p&s to do all the work for me. Yes there are times I use it like wednesday night at the scouts but I wasn't thinking of taking a camera with me that night, my hubby brought it along and I was grateful I had something. My problem I have is I have a big bag for carrying my DSLR and it does get annoying carrying it everywhere I go so looking for a petite backpack where I can put my DSLR and it's spare lens in so I can carry it around easier. If I don't get one, come my hols I may just leave it behind and just use the p&s. It's a dilemma for me, lol
