Call me picky, but looking through the popular page I kind of expect to see inspiring shots from people I may not have noticed before which will encourage me to look through their photos and potentially (a) pick up some tips and inspiration and/or (b) follow them.
Not a random selction of stuff from the past 24 hrs.
Could we have a Random and a Popular page?
I've loved so many of the pictures, but some of the choices do seem very random.
I know personally, I've had a few pictures on the popular page (which I DO appreciate! ), up for just a few hours, but have seen others' photos that stay up for 2 or 3 days...which seems sort of random to me, as well.
I appreciate that the monkeys have a tough job, sorting through so many photos, with many of the choices being so spectacular....so it's got to be hard to select the photos to put on the popular page each day......
...So your idea might just be easier on everyone.
So why is it the popular page and not the random page?
It should be a pat on the back to be 'Popular' not a random gift, if no one is popular then are we all mediocre with nothing to aim for?
This topic has been up before and I agree with you. The popular page and the photo monkeys seem to be uninspired. They might need to eat some of my bananas
I agree with you, Craigy. Random is fine, but random and popular are completely different things. It would be nice to have both, but I'm sure it would take too many man-hours to come up with popular photos, unless the members could vote in a streamlined way.
Maybe an algorithm with a set amount of views or favs attached to a picture to work with? Still remote but with built in 'awesomeness' parameters. Surely even a monkey could write that!
Especially with black bananas to fuel them along!
And yes, I am aware that this thread has been up before, I started one myself, but the page has been getting worse recently - so much so that I barely bother looking anymore, surely not the point of popular!
I totally agree! i would much rather have both a popular and a random page ( the random because of the chance of finding great photographers who havent yet got alot of comments or followers to "up" their views )

i just stick with looking at the Day pages. You'll notice that they are in "popular" (whatever the hell that means!) order, and this seems to be more reliable than the popular page, giving a true representative as to what has been viewed/ commented and fav'd the most. And PLUS it gives you a choice to view the randoms, which to tell you the truth I prefer to do as there are some corkers to be found!
Hey, let me explain why the popular page is powered by an algorithm not by "number of views" or comments or whatever.
Do you want to see a page of the same peoples work over and over?
People with 300, 400 followers are undoubtedly going to have more views & comments than someone with 10 followers, but what if that person with only 10 followers is a better photographer (we're being hypothetical here).
Isn't it better and fairer to put everyone on a level playing field, that's what the algorithm tries to do, it's constantly being tweaked, and yes it's very difficult to judge, not only are computers pretty dumb when it comes to opinions on art, people have different expectations too.
This is a field of programming and AI i'm really interested in and if anyone wants to discuss it with me, and we come up with a measurably better algorithm they get a free 1 Year Ace account.
is an algorithm some type of monkey cuz i have no idea what it is. i check the pop page but prefer to just wander thru the pages. sometimes i go last to first.
I can see you have your hands full with it too, Ross. When there were just a few hundred of us, that was one thing, now that there are thousands...well...how to plug in those variables?? I don't have an answer. But maybe renaming that page so people don't think its an honor to be there could be a start. A lot of people, both new and experienced with the site, still don't get it. Or they think its an honor of some kind.
Maybe you could call it "the sampler" or something like that.
And not to merge two conversations into one, but something big and bold in the sign up info should be added to explain to members that this is a site for YOUR OWN work. I actually got on the phone with a member last week and had to explain to her that we are not posting pictures we find on the web that we like, we are taking these pictures OURSELVES. She had no idea and immediately pulled down the image she added and put up original work, but that one is a common misunderstanding too.
