Hi, Help Please

I am looking for a camera body to use as a backup for my Canon 50D. I am having some issues (from dropping it, I believe), and will have to send it off to Canon, but I also just want to have an extra body. I think all I really need would be a Rebel T1i. I was thinking of upgrading before, but now I just think I should spend the big money on glass. Plus, I've seen the amazing photos on here taken with Rebels (not to mention point and shoots, polaroid cameras, etc...), and I'm a firm believer that it's the photographer, not the camera. Anyway, I digress.

I guess my questions are what you think of the Rebel T1i, if you have any other suggestions, if you can tell me where I might get a good deal on one, or just any other advice before I make the purchase. I appreciate it. ~Lacey Jo

I have the Rebel T1i (or 500D as I'm in Britain!) and I absolutely love it! It's fairly light (comparatively) and easy to use. I find I get nice clear images from it. It's got the video etc. I'm afraid I can't give you any suggestions about where to get it, but I got mine in November for £500 with an 18-55 IS lens.

I actually take Koshi's old 400D with me to weddings, for use as a macro (I've just never gotten around to getting an EF macro lens). It also means I have another capable backup body with me, in case the unthinkable happens. Other than the poor low-light performance, I can't fault it. I imagine the 500D is quite a bit better.

Another option would be a 30D - they're so cheap now - or even a 5D - those go for as low as $400 or so now too. My old, old 20D is still totally reliable, but I'd probably draw the line there.

On another note, it's funny that you're having trouble with your 50D. One of my 50D bodies won't switch off for me anymore, and is having to be sent to Canon. Mind you, my two 50D units get driven very hard!

@jinximages Exsqueeze me?! Where are you finding those so cheap??

@laceyjogautreau My workplace just sold a whole stack of them at $400 per unit when they upgraded them to the Mk II's. That's in Australia, so I figure they should be found for even better than that elsewhere. Well, it would be typical, but not a given I guess.

@laceyjogautreau Not to depress you further, but a mate of mine got one for himself and it had less than 300 shutter activations on it.

@laceyjogautreau Ummm, I'm not sure. It seems you get a lot for the $$$, but some of that stuff seems mostly pointless. I mean, the 450 is obviously an older model, the 75-300 is, well, nothing to rave about. And a 500mm f/8 has limited use (and with a teleconverter it's an f/11 at least). I mean, it all looks like usable stuff, but of limited use. If you think you will find uses for all that stuff, then it seems good, but if not, well, you need to weigh up the value of the parts you will use.

@jinximages i totally needed that opinion, thx. i wasn't really sold on it, but i will admit, the advertising ghouls had me really looking. :)

they're expensive, take a risk on ebay maybe or look at used elsewhere maybe pros who upgrade. Canon bodies are top but the lenses are real expensive me thinks. I'm a panasonic boy but if you have Canon lenses already stay in the family.

I just bought a Canon T1i when my xs died. I am loving it! I found it at a reasonable price since I only needed body only.
