Would You Help Me Identify This Spider?

September 30th, 2011
Hello all!

I photographed this spider in my garden, between 2 rose bushes. I have yet to be able to identify it. I live in central PA. Could you help me identify this spider?

Thank you, Linda

It looks like an orb weaver to me but I would have no idea what kind.

It's the white dotted, round bellied, eight legged spiderus horribillus!! Great capture.

lol @ Maria. I know what you mean! I was nervous getting so close to it! I felt as if it would grab me and roll me up in that spider web @dmcrisp.

@robv @cjwhite always seem to be good on the bug IDs. =)

It's an orb weaver, looks like the genus Neoscona. I can't be sure of the species but crucifera is common in your area, I'd have to see the dorsum to get a better idea of what it is.

I have one of those too! I guess it;s a common spider to see in the fall http://365project.org/5unflow3r/andere-zeug/2011-09-26

Linda, ask Kimmi Stephens (@kimmistephens). She's an entomologist. :)

@wndswptlady It definitely looks like an orb weaver. I live in Eastern Pa. and the kind that's listed in the Audobon guide is a Marbled Orb Weaver- which would be common for both of us. But Laura's right- Kimmi Stephens is a pro- and if that doesn't work, check out your local environmental center.
