Film February success!

February 29th, 2012
Film February, for anyone who didn't follow it, can still be enjoyed by searching film-challenge2012 above. The theme was a great time for me and I wanted to give a big high five to those who made this month a stand out month from the usual hum drum.

I loved film before this, but it's been nice to share it - at the end of the day thats what this project is about. The odd roll being ripped, thats one for me and a few for other guys I know, my TLR let me down a bit with some shoddy pictures, but my other cameras surprised me. I got used to not seeing what was displayed on the back of the camera, and instead looked forward with excitement to, twice a week, going to the lab, and standing on the busy pavement afterwards scrutinising the contact sheets, then driving home at 80mph to upload. And the variety has been ace, from Megan's journeys through Eastern Europe, Peter's tranquil beach shots, the crime torn streets of Jase's Portland, Denise's colourful instants, Diane's peaceful buildings, Stacy's portraits, Shelly's trees and blue skies, Myla's cat on a step, Barboras double exposures and Hannah's darkroom experiements and Chris guiding us like a leader with some Kodak excellence. And there were others who joined in (check out the tag).

After that long winded introduction, my question is, which was your fav (or yours and someone elses), to film, and non-film (of someone elses) photographers.

oooops, forgot, this is my fav!!

February 29th, 2012
It was a really cool challenge, and I'm so glad I participated. Over the course of the month, I racked up 4 new flim cameras, but only shot with one for the challenge. I also really enjoyed the excitement of waiting for film to be processed, usually taking my rolls to the 1 hour pharmacy because I couldn't wait to see what I did. I shot 6 rolls of film, one of which was expired and a total fail (and the only non-film shot in my Feb film album) and one that got stuck and I had to rip half of it due to a buckle, which produced some pretty neat results on the film that did turn out. It was also the perfect month for me to have this challenge because I'm currently in a class called World History of Photography, so I have been able to put some knowledge to use during the challenge. :)

Since you mentioned my portraits, I'll post this as my favorite - it was my first film post of the challenge - shot on the film that was in my Canon AE-1 when I bought it - my favorite girl, Andie Noël :)

Oops, I posted my own FAV....here's my fav of all the shots posted for the challenge:
from @timeweaver
February 29th, 2012
Yeah, I meant other peoples but either way its fine, just so people know that isn't my picture at the top of the page, he he, its Peter's!
February 29th, 2012
@chewyteeth hehe i just edited my post :) maybe post your own fav and your fav of someone else? :)
February 29th, 2012
(@grammyn @myla (@jml0306 also. ;)
February 29th, 2012

@sdpace Good decision! my own personal best (I peaked early!)
February 29th, 2012
@chewyteeth Thanks for posting this Dave. So nice to see that I am not the only person on this site that appreciates the beauty of a film shot. I thin we proved that. I still have 2 cameras with a full roll of 120 and 35mm. Once done, that is 6 more rolls to send for developing. So, I have lots more to post in the coming weeks and months.

My fave, as it appeared to me to be the most real image I have seen on this site in awhile:

My fave of my own:

February 29th, 2012
I loved this challenge, as it gave me the the excuse to finally learn using my hand-me-down Pentax spotmatic. The anticipation of seeing the photos was hard, gotten so used to digital, and I'd end up taking crap shots to finish the roll to see the ones I really wanted to. I've gotten a bit better, and still have a roll, trying to take only shots I really want prints of. I'm sure to continue, as a hobby within a hobby. And on a search to find the original lens to my camera, a super takumar 55mm.

My fav of someone else's: Peter de Graaff @peterdegraaff

My own fav

February 29th, 2012
@chewyteeth that wonderful portait of Megan was the somehow the only other film shot I faved. I still think a kitten suit would be awesome!
February 29th, 2012
@myla she saw that comment and asked for one. ;)
I'm shooting with her tomorrow.
and that's my fav of yours too, and maybe the cat on the step which I love
February 29th, 2012
Haha, was going to start a similar thread but @chewyteeth beat me to it. This month has been the most valuable photography lesson I think I could have ever had, so big thanks to @cluvlj for starting the challenge, and to @beautifulthing for getting me interested in film just in time for the challenge. My camera of choice is now a 45 year old manual Fujica, so I now understand how aperture and shutter speed actually work together with each other :) So I will be using a album purely for film shot's. My personal fav is prob todays post, which was shot yesterday.....

And picking just one from the other guys is hard, but will go with @chewyteeth simply cos I'm jealous that I didn't take it.

Get on ebay, freecycle etc. people and get yourself's a film cam, you will have so much fun.
February 29th, 2012
My last 3 fav's are all film, so I've chosen one by my inspiration @chewyteeth and though I love all his Megan shots I also love the mood this one convey's, wonderful

My favourite film pic may still be on my roll but @chewyteeth broke my film camera so I'll go with a cool light leak one,

I still have polaroid film left so I will still keep up with the odd film shot, who else is carrying on?
February 29th, 2012
@charli321
That's bitter sweet, faving my picture then blaming me for the camera lol. I think it's a given that we're all carrying on!
February 29th, 2012
@chewyteeth LOL bitersweet, but true :-P
February 29th, 2012
I just noticed, as of this moment, there were 486 film shots posted. It would be nice for nothing but a benchmark, if 500+ ended up being posted. There's still time, peeps!
February 29th, 2012
You all got some great shots! Funny, before I started on this website I had found my old film camera from high school (a zillion years ago) and was wondering what to do with it...I couldn't decide so I just put it back in the back of the closet where I found it! So glad I did since now I'm inspired to try it out again, I just need to get some film...somewhere!?
February 29th, 2012
Glancing thru I have to go with @beautifulthing 's Red Rocks shot as it is the best place ever to see a concert!

February 29th, 2012
It took me a while to get my 35mm up and running, so I only did the film challenge for one week, and there are three of them that I really love. But rather than all of them, I'll just post this one- which also was a favorite for the entire month.
February 29th, 2012
@jasehoad :) @tamsg4 thank you!
February 29th, 2012
I have been dabbling with film since about 2010, when I got my first Holga. But I didn't get serious about it until I found that dirty dinged-up Mamiya Sekor 500TL for, what was it, $7.99, at the Goodwill. And I have been a goner since. :) Shooting on film has taught me more about photography than any single other thing that I have done thus far. I like having to be purposeful, and I like having to actually think about the shots I'm taking instead of firing off a card full of images and hoping for the best. I like taking part in reviving a fading art and way of doing things. I don't even mind waiting for my film to get developed. Much. :)

My favorite cameras have definitely been my vintage mechanical ones, although I did get a few (yes, I said few, I buy too many cameras) more automatic ones for Film Challenge purposes, and those are growing on me too. I can absolutely see going totally film when it comes to photography, and if I wasn't smack in the middle of my 365 project, I would probably do it. It made "shooting a picture a day" challenging, though. You either have to find a wide variety of stuff to shoot so that every couple of shots on your roll are different, or you have to subject people to 24 days of "oh, look, Shelly went to the mountains". So, while I'll be grudgingly taking my DSLR back out (I've barely used it this whole month!) I will be posting copious amounts of film, both to my project and to the album that I've set aside for it.

My favorite so far of my own has been what I posted for today - shot on a Minolta Maxxum XTsi, Minolta AF 75-300mm lens, and Kodak T-Max 400 B&W:

I have loved @chewyteeth 's Megan shots and especially, his ever-popular street shot that I call "Serpico" in my head for some unknown reason. I have loved @lalola616 's Diana shots, and that cam is most def going on the list. @peterdegraaff 's nature shots have been amazeballs and my bff @sdpace has proven herself to be just as awesome with film as she is with digital. :) I could go on and on - everyone has been so fabulous - but, instead, I'll just pop up my favorite film fav of someone else.

@jasehoad

February 29th, 2012
Wow, just woke up and everyone is having a film February party. Still have several rolls being developed and many more to post. Managed to destry one roll, and also the local shop mistakenly developed a roll of Velvia as C41 stripping the colour to give a strange effect. Totally understand @sdpace waiting at the one hour shop. Stood around myself in shop in anticipation and was delighted when one place said they could process in 20 mins. Overall posted 48 photos for the month from 4 different cameras and a range of film. @chewyteeth Thanks for the inspiration to go and buy vintage Olympus cameras. @cluvlj Thanks for coming up with some rules and the challenge for month. It was wonderful to see so many participating, to follow new photographers and also be followed. There is a real sense of cameradie and many other 365ers I'm sure are thinking of getting some film. Absolutely loved the subversiveness of @beautifulthing posting a WWYD 44 using film. It was inspired, subversive, and produced some of the best images ever.

It was terrific that many of the photos on the film-challenge2012 made it to the popular page. My faves (and there are two) are a colour by @cluvlj using Velvia and a b&w that @beautifulthing just posted

My own favourite for month was Pentangle

February 29th, 2012
@peterdegraaff hanks Peter. Hmmm, they developed a roll of Velvia C41. I have a roll of "I don't really care" images on Velvia I haven't sent out for E-6 yet. Tell me, what does Velvia gone C41 look like? I may try this for giggles.
February 29th, 2012
@cluvlj These are links to some of shots that were developed that way. when i went in the other day with another roll of Velvia they said would have to send away and admitted they had got it wrong and tried to colour correct when scanning images from negatives. Thought at the time colour didn't seem right for what I was expecting.

February 29th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Makes sense. It is a Bleach bypass look, as pre-bleach and bleach are 2 of the 6 components of an E-6 Process. And, if E-6 is not within a half degree of 100 degree bath temperature, it can also screw things up. Toxic stuff those E-6 chemicals. I think I might give the one roll of Velvia for a C41 bath, May make it more interesting.
February 29th, 2012
@cluvlj Certainly made the clowns heads look more Stephen King and nightmarish.
February 29th, 2012
This challenge has been so good. I have loved seeing everyone's images everyday, and of course met great new people to follow. It was a fab excuse to bust out the weird members of my vintage camera collection and test a few new oldies out. But of course my biggest film love is instant film and I had a ball with the instax and the polaroid SX70 model 2. Im with Jase Im going to keep an album for film shots only but I only have about 18 days left to complete my 365. still not sure if Im gonna come back for another year. Faves? way too hard to pick. I will try......
February 29th, 2012
@chewyteeth Thank you for liking my beach shots so much
February 29th, 2012

A fave for 'Chasing the Rozzers' and being on the spot at the right time!
SO many other favorites, can I just say all of the pool with the film challenge tag?!
March 1st, 2012

My fave of my own is actually from today! I have to think about my fave of someone else's...there were SO many good film photos this month!
March 1st, 2012
I think I'm also going to go with this photo from @chewyteeth! So good!
March 1st, 2012
@noo Thank you very much :)
March 1st, 2012
@peterdegraaff your beach shots are so etherial and other worldly its like they are from some dreamy realm elsewhere. I love them.
And @chewyteeth Dave. OMG your shots of Megan are stunning. But your willingness to try new things like a Recessky and redscale is awesome. @beautifulthing Shelly your shot of today is amazing. Grand in scale and dramatic in its intensity. An all time fave for me.
March 1st, 2012
I came to the party very late, but watched from afar with much admiration. I'm definitely hooked on film and can't wait to learn more when my B&W film & processing class starts in a few weeks!

There were so many amazing photos, but I just have to go with this one from @cluvlj:

I really only had a few shots and still had a hard time deciding. Must have been tough for many of you to pick only one of your own! Here's mine:

I heart film.
March 1st, 2012
@chewyteeth Hey, I rescued my film, it actually only had 24 exp, not 36 as I thought, I'd taken 24 when it got bust, I'm off into Chorlton tomorrow so I will get it processed, EXCITING!
March 2nd, 2012
@chewyteeth Thanks for posting your comments! This month has been amazing for me, and I'm so glad we had this challenge. I still can't put into words exactly why I like film so much. Part of it is sort of a reverse snobbishness--look at my low-tech photos!--but more importantly, there's just a different quality to the colors and textures of film photos. I've also developed a renewed appreciation for film photographers, especially those who took news and action shots with manual cameras. How did they manage to get so many variables right?
March 2nd, 2012
My favorite for the month:

Beautiful, Shelly!
March 5th, 2012
Had great time - and am still using film.

Someone elses:

Mine:

It was difficult to pick an absolute favourite as there were so many good images.

I knows some of you kept a folder going anyway but is there any argument for saying we should do another month?

I thought Analogue April
Or maybe Analogue-May which doesn't have the same ring to it. Even if there's just a handful of us I'll post a discussion. Get everyone smiling again. ;)
March 19th, 2012
@chewyteeth I kinda liked your idea of Film Fridays. I still have 5 rolls of 120 to send in to develop. Also, I have 3 cameras still loaded!
March 19th, 2012
Maybe may would be better, because April is comming really soon. (And I dont have money for developping my film actually :D )
But I'm certainly looking forward :)
March 19th, 2012
@chewyteeth I don't have another folder anymore but I am MORE than happy to do another month! I loved doing a whole month of film - I'm really thinking of switching to it almost entirely. Plus I've gotten a fair bit of new cams in the last month, and I need to give those a go. :)
March 19th, 2012
@beautifulthing what you got?
Lets do it, lets do May, is that too far? Save up our film stocks for a month?
March 19th, 2012
@cluvlj
I still have a frickin film in the lab since about 6 weeks ago, the pigs have lost it I think and they keep giving me a different reason each time I go! I need a whole month man, else I'll just use old shit and cheat.
March 19th, 2012
@chewyteeth May is good - dat's when my birthday is. :) I might do April too though. ;) I have that Polaroid Super Shooter on the way. Then, I got a Yashica Electro 35 GSN, although that one makes me sad - I finally got the battery squared away, but it looks like something is wrong with the circuits inside, and the exposure meters still don't work. :( I can use it without the batteries, but it will always fire at 1/500. Maybe that'll be a good challenge for me! I also got another little film point-and-shoot - that's my new thing, the little point-and-shoots, because they are so bloody cheap. It's a Ricoh RZ-770, I think. I'm most excited about the Super Shooter, though, I've been wanting an instant cam for ages, as you know!! :)
March 19th, 2012
Shooting impossible project film?
I've got a photoshoot with a tattooed lovely on saturday and I'm using PX70 impossible project film in my Polaroid 1000 red button.
Maybe April some of us and May some of us, maybe we can form a film-army and do shifts clogging up the popular page with film.

There's a fukn picture on there right now of two flies at it. wha t fk?
March 19th, 2012
@beautifulthing tag+message above=my intention.
March 19th, 2012
@chewyteeth Well, I'm game either way! I'm in. You know that!
March 19th, 2012
@chewyteeth I like the picture of the flies. At least SOMEONE'S getting some.

Oh shit, did I just say that out LOUD?

The Super Shooter takes that Fuji stuff that they still make, so that's good. Impossible Project is hella expensive. :( But I applaud what those guys are doing. I'm going to see how I like the Super Shooter, and if it doesn't float my boat, I'm getting an Instax.
March 19th, 2012
@beautifulthing @cluvlj @chewyteeth @lalola616 Happy to do another month or Fridays, etc. am still taking lots of film and posting irregularly across folders. As well as digi wigi
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth I thought you didn't look at the pop page?

I'm ok with whatever I have some impossible film left from film feb. not so active on here anymore, I've become quite disheartened by the whole thing!
March 20th, 2012
I've been savoring my last roll of film, trying to make it of shots I want printed, trying to be frugal. But I'm game for more film days/month. I've been taking a bit of a break from here, only popping in to take a peek now & then, but I'll probably be posting again soon.
March 20th, 2012
@charli321 @myla
Well guys we need a month of film fun if only to get you two back into the game!
Charli what you disheartened by?
Fun, fun fun!
(I'm pulling a I-believe-what-I'm-saying-face)
March 20th, 2012
@beautifulthing
you did say it outloud, or maybe it was the voice in my head taunting me, that I heard.
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth I got my Super Shooter in the mail yesterday! It came with film but, alas, the film was a total bust, so I couldn't test-shoot it. :( The chemical packs were totally dried out and the adhesive had disintegrated, so the negative side wasn't even sticking to the paper side. BUT, I did get to use it to get the hang of handling film in the cam, so that was cool. I have a pack of Fuji on the way from Amazon. I just hope the cam works! It had a lot of battery corrosion in it. :(
March 20th, 2012
@beautifulthing
oops
I don't know the super shooter, the battery packs which encase polaroid film can usually be transfered, so that when the mercury battery has failed in old packs you can darkroom the paper into another case, would that help? I've binned all my old packs though, doh!
Hope it works, and if it don't get your money back off the seller and get the instax. x So we doing this April?? whoooooo!
March 20th, 2012
@myla @charli321 @peterdegraaff @beautifulthing @cluvlj

Well maybe its on, with those who have three albums it seems an easy decision, I'd rather do a month again rather than odd days because I won't shoot film often to fill odd days, just go back through the pics I have already, I'm lazy. Jase was up for April, I think, and I'm in the gang of folk who need the kick start again. So for anyone who wants to, lets do it. I hate tags but I guess we could use the same or make it Analogue-April2012

blah, and those folks who didn't get involved in time last time can do this time so spread the word. Shall I do a thread? Would be nice for some fresh blood. I'm gonna be shooting with an OM1 and I might just hit eBay now to see if there's anything else I could perhaps purchase....!

x
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth I'm lucky, this one takes regular alkaline AA batteries, and they are separate from the film pack, so I'm set there. I can't find a manual for it anywhere online though, not even on the Butkus site. But there's a group on Flickr and bits and pieces on YouTube.

Also - I'm up for April and May and whatever. :)
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth @beautifulthing I'm game! Lotsa film cameras, lotsa film here. Let's go!
March 20th, 2012
@cluvlj Yay! Have you picked up any new cams since February?
March 20th, 2012
@beautifulthing Nope. I have enough toys to play with now. My goal with this next one is convert the old 1904 Kodak 122 format to a 120. Believe it or not, yes, I know how! Almost picked up a camera at an antique show last week, circa 1950. It was still in the original box, and had the original 2 rolls of the original Verichrome Pan (exp 1954) that came with the camera kit. Decided against it at the last second.
March 20th, 2012
@cluvlj Ooh, what kind of camera was it? My only 'big' purchase has been the Yashica Electro I just got - I've got the Super Shooter now, too. Plus a couple of 600 Polaroids and a 110 camera, which I probably should have passed on, and a whole bunch of small point-and-shoot cams, which I probably should have passed on too. :) I think it's time to stop buying and start shooting.
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth Oh y'know I'm taking some bloody good photographs yet cr@p like 2 house flies shagging makes the pop page, the top 20 etc etc. people I like get kicked off for shooting their mouth offend others not able to take a joke. Now I know these things shouldn't bother me, but they do. So I decided to not take any photos, only my OCD kicks in and I end up posting sh!t and thus self fulfilling never getting on the pop page. It's a viscous circle! Anyway, maybe I should offer up my services as photog asst, need any1 on your next shoot?
March 20th, 2012
@beautifulthing I call it a "kiddie" camera. A Brownie Hawkeye. Here is an exact replica of what I saw:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39250372@N06/4387497655/
March 20th, 2012
@cluvlj Awww, that's cute. :) I almost got an Argus TLR the other day, but I passed that up, too, because those buggers are basically filmless. I also found a Canon AE-1 at thrift, but they wanted $75 for it, and that's just a little more than I'm willing to spend - especially after the whole Yashica thing. $50 and the circuit board is crap. Yes, I'm cheap. :)
March 20th, 2012
@charli321 I feel the same way about things lately. :( Except the photog asst part, I'm too lazy for that. :D
March 20th, 2012
@charli321
ha I'll bear it in mind, but I might get penis-size complex when you start thrashing out the Canon super-camera and take over the shoot. I've got two this weekend but I don't think I can spring new plans on them at this stage.

Yes to the PP stuff. Although my recent Louise pic shot to fame stats wise, I was surprised, the house fly thing makes me sad. Keep trying I'd say and find your own pride. I've been bad commenting by the way! Will zoom over soon but I've gotta deal with a shit load of comments on my thread.
Also Tina.....bad times. I wanted to punch a Christian in the head, but that's not allowed where I live so I had to settle for a Jew.
x
March 20th, 2012
@beautifulthing

Oh yeah, camera talk, i'm getting stiff. Roll on April!
March 20th, 2012
@chewyteeth LMAO :) Also, I am stealing "find your own pride" as a quote. Thank you. That is all.
March 21st, 2012
@chewyteeth @beautifulthing @peterdegraaff @charli321 @lalola616 @jasehoad And anyone else I missed. I am SO up for some more film challenges. Film fridays sound great as does any other. I have a shitload of cameras to use and am very happy to have another crack at it. Sorry for the late reply I have just finished my 365 and have been away on a canoe camp for three days.
March 21st, 2012
@noo Hope it wasn't a barbed wire canoe!
March 21st, 2012
@chewyteeth @beautifulthing you've got me looking at cameras again on eBay.
March 21st, 2012
@peterdegraaff Lucky for me it wasn't and I did have a paddle too. LOL
March 21st, 2012
@peterdegraaff Ah ha...so it begins! :)
March 21st, 2012
@chewyteeth I shall leave her at home! I need to get myself a decent film camera, may pop into that place in norther 1/4 this saturday!
March 21st, 2012
@beautifulthing It's weird I can't bare to go and look at peoples pics these days because it is just making me feel so inadequate. I guess I'm just going through one of those bad stages we all get and getting myself all het up about it, LOL! Here's to finding our pride and kicking the PP's ass with film fabulousness!
March 21st, 2012
@charli321 YES!! :)
March 21st, 2012
@charli321
erm, will be expensive, have you been in there, its all Leicas and Bronicas. I know they'll sell you an FM2 and stuff but I bet its not cheap. There's a Nikon F SLR with three lenses on eBay right now, going in about two hours I think and its at £25 including postage. might even be a bag with it. I'm in the city Sunday if you wanna meet for a coffee, you can come in at the end of the shoot, are you free sunday morning, do you want me to ask my male model?
March 21st, 2012
@chewyteeth I'm in manchester sunday as my hubby is touting his wares at a wedding fare at the crown plaza hotel and he needs me to help him drum up business, we could always meet for a drink after in northern quarter? I'm trawling ebay as I type, may go to the shop in manchester just to drool! I dunno what you've done but all the 35mm SLRs that are about to finish have just shot up in price!
March 21st, 2012
@charli321
you need the magic Dave touch. You could borrow one of my cameras for a month if you don't wanna buy one? Maybe the MZ7 which I was shooting with on the day in Manchester, or the Praktica. Well you'll have to text me on sunday when you's done cause I didn't save your number, and if I'm still around, I have a window between shooting with Peter and buying my sister an early dinner because it's her birthday.
