I have a brand new DSLR Nikon D5100 -
Now I want to learn about all those settings ISO's, aperture, lighting etc.,etc.
So I would like to start a challenge for the inexperienced/less experienced photographers to enter for 5 days to post under challenge.
Comments and suggestions encouraged from more experienced photographers.
Suggestions for improvement is also encouraged. Day 6 is vote for the entries.
Day 7 winner is announced. The winner finds/selects an experienced photographer who would be willing to host the next Camera Settings Challenge (someone you follow, someone who comments on the challenge, etc.).
What do you think???? Is this something you would be willing to participate in?
If there is some interest I will select someone to start off the first challenge.
I think anyone could enter but the purpose is to have people try settings they don't have as much experience with. I also thought rather than having the winner select the challenge we would all learn more from someone whose work they admire
Kathy, I got a Nikon D5100 for Christmas. I have YET to figure out manual mode, so I know I am not utilizing the camera to its fullest capabilities. would love to participate and hopefully learn something in the interim.
I just did this today... used a setting I have never used before!! It's a little daunting at first and scary, but once you do it it's like... WOW that was easier than I thought lol.
Once you start using the "M" button you will never look back. I did a course last year and learnt more in 1 week than I had done in the previous 3 years wit my camera. It allows you to tak control of the camera, rather than it control you. It makes taking photographs FUN and isn't that why we all do it!!
Perhaps contest days are Saturday - Wednesday. Thursday is voting day.
Friday winner is announced and new experienced host is picked. Saturday new Challenge starts. This way shots can be taken week day or weekend.
Trust me, I am also afraid to do this, but I would like the host to give links to tips and possible suggestions - kindof the host mentor of the challenge. Other experienced photographers also add their opinions on the shots in relation to the specific challenge.
I am going to write the basic challenge rules out. I posted on someone's wall to see if they are interested in hosting the challenge. If I don't get a response quickly I will ask someone else.
This is what will be posted each week with specifics to the dates and challenge will change.
Does this look right? Did I forget something?
Camera Settings Challenge #1 -

(brief tip on specific challenge - optional)
Link(s) to help learn that particular setting

Hi Kathy - I have a starting idea that I think will be fairly simple but will get everybody started thinking about what the settings mean and I have a few links. Would you like me to e-mail you something? I'll post my e-mail address in one of your older photos so that you can contact me. Cheers!
IT is Official!
Judith Greenwood is going to kick-off the first Camera Settings Challenge starting tomorrow. She has a great idea for the challenge and I can't wait to learn more about my camera.
For some of us this is going to be new territory.
For those of you who are experienced please plan to help serve as mentors and offer comments on pic's that are posted. We don't want to just hear "great shot" but rather "I like this but you could also try this...".
@djepie I highly recommend and ask that you also comment on those posting pic's in the camera settings challenge. I think you would add a lot of valuable input as well. Especially after more shots are posted!

Hi Kathy,
Count me in, although I might not be around much this weekend.
As you'll see from my page, I've just got back from Lincolnshire, where I've been looking after a group(s) of schoolchildren for a week.
Great fun but now I've got a whole lot of stuff to catch up on.
@jester glad to hear you will be joining in. I'm excited about learning more about camera settings.I'm glad we have the time to enter & post that covers part of a weekend and a few week days
