"Replicate Me" Challenge #1

posted August 26th, 2012
I'm not sure if anything like this has been done, but I would like to start a series of "Replicate Me" challenges wherein a photo is posted and photographers are tasked with "Replicating" the shot, both in subject and technique.

As this is the first one, I will keep it simple. Replicate the attached Reflected Selfie to the best of your ability.

Please, don't give away any secrets in this thread as to how a particular technique is achieved until I have chosen the finalists next weekend; then it's open season to learn from each other. Until then, it is up to you to use your whits to figure it out, set it up, and Replicate the shot!

Major Objective: Replicate the shot as closely as possible.
Sub-Objective: Replicate the technique using different medium or different subject.

The "Winner" will be tasked to set up the next "trick" shot and start a new thread.

Make sure you tag your photo with "replicate-me-1"

Here we go:

@ymrdigitalphoto Great Nina! My son starts Thursday!
@hueymilunz I'm sure you can figure it out with a little experimentation :)
@boogie Nope Mags, no photoshop and just one CLICK! I also took a short video of it I will post after the challenge :)

This is a GREAT challenge. We did this as an assingment in one of my classes last quarter (specifically, to recreate a conceptual portrait). I replicated this (as a selfie). http://www.the-most-expensive.info/art/most-expensive-photograph.html. You'll just have to use your imagination because there's no way in hell I'll post my results here. From a replication standpoint, it was good. But it is probably the least-flattering photo ever taken of me. At least I got an "A" for the pain and humiliation of giving up all vanity. :)

@mabelkitty Haha, that must have been a heck of an assignment! :)

I'm going to give it a go, but I just wanted to say, that is a great selfie! You're actually pretty congenial looking when you're not a glowering high-key ghostie! (And i just looked at your icon pic larger, and Gage looked over and said "that looks cool.")

@m9f9l Haha, thanks! I think I prefer "glowering" though :)
@ozziehoffy Haha, you'll figure it out I'm sure! :)

@myhrhelper Oh Yeah Kathy, that's the stuff! Well done!

@grizzlysghost Thank you - so glad I didn't have to have facial hair and the same shirt, I had no idea how I could replicate that!!

So much disappointed me when I saw the final result as far as photography and portraits go but when I saw it large I was quite pleased with the replication.

So where is the video with the great reveal you promised??

@lisjam1 I will post it soon! And "Great Reveal?" LOL, something tells me you are setting yourself up for disappointment! :)

@geocacheking - great replication! Does this require 2 mirrors?

@bobfoto Yep, set at a 45 degree angle to each other. It makes me dizzy trying to picture it in my mind, but was so obvious when I stepped into the "reflection zone" :) Actually that is how I came up with this, I kind of stumbled into it! :)

@grizzlysghost - might have to pass that info onto The Seven.

@bobfoto Yes and I had to have a lovely photo assistant help me to get our into place. It was fun trying to get her to hold still and hold the mirror high enough for me. She's at least 8 inches (20ish cm) shorter. She was so patient. :)
