Challenge: A-Z of your country

September 23rd, 2010
Alrighty, so as per Vanya's rad suggestion, new challenge is to photograph something native to where you live / where you're from (or even something familiar, but your own local version of it), with the A-Z challenge in mind. So for instance, day 1 would mean something beginning with / symbolizing A - thus if you're from... Texas, you could have an armadillo? :D (that took me a few minutes to think up, haha)

Dorrena had a few questions in the Challenges thread - I say you play it your way; keep it in alphabetical order and the rest is up to you (whether you do one every other day or whatever) and there's not really any need for a cut-off date, yes?

I'll start mine in a separate album aaaand with any luck, I can find an A today.

We can tag them Home_A, Home_B and so forth.
To see all the entries in one spot (and include yours with them) use the tag Home_A_Z in all the shots you post for this challenge :D

If anyone has anything else to add, let me know. Have fun! :)
September 23rd, 2010
is there a certain time we have to start and finish this by?

i wont be in my home until the 1st of Oct
September 23rd, 2010
I've always enjoyed photos that show the region where our photographers live, so this will be lovely to look forward to. Please, everyone, in your profiles, let us know where you live! I see wonderful photos sometimes, and have no idea where they were taken! Looking forward to some arm-chair traveling!
September 23rd, 2010
You don't make it easy do you. An A-Z challenge is hard enough. I'll think i'll skip this one. :o) I'm already having trouble as it is without more pressure.

Good luck with that though.
September 23rd, 2010
; ) I just updated my profile with me home locations. I think I will do this A-Z thing once my big move is over *sigh* It's hard work LOL
September 23rd, 2010
Oh I'm very excited by this. I love doing A-Z lists with the kids on journeys. Now we can do it on 365 too!
September 23rd, 2010
mmm, just did a tag search for home-a and it turned up 16,000 entries, this is a popular challenge!
maybe the tag should something less common like challengehomea, challengehomeb, etc. or similar, any thoughts?
September 23rd, 2010
@petervanallen; we need the tag to keep everything together otherwise we would never find the pictures. Maybe @indiannie_jones has an idea on this.
September 23rd, 2010
@petervanallen You're right about the home-a, so scrap that

I tried home_a and that seems to work fine (nothing shows up yet) so how's that? (I'll keep updating my original post with what we choose)
September 23rd, 2010
Cool idea. I'm already thinking...A is for Alton, B is for Bon Air (a popular tavern), C is for civil war prison. Ooh, when do we start?
September 23rd, 2010
How about "MyTown-A" "MyTown-B" those are available tags!
September 23rd, 2010
home_a sounds good - have we started yet?
September 23rd, 2010
@petervanallen; I agree "home_a, b, c, etc" sounds good. AND yes Peter, I've posted my *A* picture today. Tagged it! :-)
September 23rd, 2010
Oh good I'm glad we've started I've just drunk my first cup of tea in 20 years to get my A shot!
September 23rd, 2010
I'm so pleased that I could have input here and thank's to Annie for getting this one off the ground :) Now to get my thinking cap on for home_a :) I'm really looking forward to seeing everyones photos :)
September 23rd, 2010
My husband suggested getting a children's book to get suggestions for what to photograph. I like the idea and asked him to join us and share the book with me. ;-) I had a heck of a time thinking of an *A* thing. ACK!!!! I've only just begun.
September 23rd, 2010
I've started today too, but haven't uploaded yet (just got home) :D

Have fun, all! And it is agreed then, home_a it is!
September 23rd, 2010
HAHA Im still thinking. Ive know what Im doing for B and C. Typical!!
Dorrena congrats on uploading the 1st. It is really pretty :)
September 23rd, 2010
Hrm, I wasn't going to do this, but my theme-lines shot for today just so happens to begin with A and is pretty relevant to this city so... ¬_¬
September 23rd, 2010
@eyebrows You should do it because you're a wonderful princess, like myself :)
September 23rd, 2010
Haha, if e'er there were a reason better than that, I'd love to see it ^_^
September 23rd, 2010
@eyebrows :D

WHERE'S YOUR FIRST SHOT, PRINCESS?

/excited
September 23rd, 2010
Chill bizzle! Got some stuff to get out the way first, give it... an hour or so I reckon, 'til it's posted :)
September 23rd, 2010
*waits on edge of seat*

*falls off edge of seat*

September 23rd, 2010
Uploaded :)
September 23rd, 2010
Ohhhh! I can't wait to get started! I will have to get started today and will post them to a separate album as well... So, tagging "home_A" and so on... sounds easy enough. The tagging that is, NOT the challenge! Hehe.
September 23rd, 2010
Great idea! I'm in. Maybe I won't do it in 26 days, and some of my pics might not be very, very specific to where I live, but I'll try hard :)
September 23rd, 2010
Good luck, ladies! :D
September 24th, 2010
Just checking: we're not on a strict 26 day schedule are we? I'm up for completing the whole alphabet but might need a bit of slack. Just saying...
September 24th, 2010
@rich57; no worries. Annie has mentioned there is no timeline. Do it on your schedule. I will be incorporating it into what I already do. This just gives me another option along with the daily shoot, and whatever catches my attention each day.
September 24th, 2010
Ok good. I'm up for the challenge but I also guess it could get tricky over time (especially Q, X, Z!!!)
September 24th, 2010
my A will be EASY! "Aspen"! Course, I need to get home ....
September 24th, 2010
Wphew, thought I was late to the party. This is going to be fun!
September 24th, 2010
Hmm, am thinking now... How local does our area hvae to be? Neighbourhood, city, county, country?
September 24th, 2010
@wormentude That's up to you - I opted for country because Cyprus is already pretty small. But I would imagine someone in the US doing something more specific to their town / city or even state.
September 24th, 2010
@indiannie_jones - Yeah, that makes sense. Mine will be the county I think (Yorkshire). :-)
September 24th, 2010
What a cool idea! I'd love to join, but I am not home :-( Still getting familiar with our new surroundings. I might attempt it later this year ;-) Looking forward to all the photos! ;-) This will be much better than any guidebook! ;-)
September 24th, 2010
I think the biggest challenge will be the tough letters like Q and X but I will push through it! I think I may end up posting some letters out of order if I find the perfect idea but we will see how it goes! =D
September 24th, 2010
Do the photo have to be current?? as in taken within the past week of posting?
September 24th, 2010
Awesome!! I'm going to do this, starting with yesterday (9/23) = A, and I'm going to try to get them all in San Luis Obispo or Cal Poly, but we'll see.
September 24th, 2010
Fancy having a go at this - glad there's no timeline as I haven't started yet. Q would be alright for us Brits - as long as Her Maj answers the door when I call round ...
September 24th, 2010
Could you go back and add tags to pictures already taken, I wonder......?
September 24th, 2010
As I said, I believe this project in itself is something YOU set your own rules for and this challenge is no exception :) have fun and shoot away!
September 24th, 2010
@indiannie_jones I'll do my best to keep it in Washington State, current date range.
September 24th, 2010
@byrdlip Can't ask for more than your best :) good luck
September 25th, 2010
I'm in! Looking forward to this challenge. Fun stuff!
September 25th, 2010
I'm doing it :D Or I'm going to try to, anyway...
September 25th, 2010
This is cool! A brilliant idea to look for everyday.
Ok, I'll do mine, but I won't create another album.
September 25th, 2010
Silly question: how do you start another album? (just in case I'm up to the challenge...)
September 25th, 2010
@stepheesue
It's an Ace membership feature, but you can always just incorporate the challenge into your regular 365 project at your own pace :)

September 25th, 2010
I think the looseness of the challenge will make it better. I'm already loving what I've seen of Cyprus, Shoreline, Weymouth and Auckland. It would be great if we could have a notification everytime a picture was tagged home_x but I suppose that's a bit unrealistic!
September 25th, 2010
I'm going to give it a try!! Just to make sure I understand (sorry I'm a teacher and have to make sure I understand all the directions!! lol)....we take pictures of anything to show our area and where we live---or anything having to do with the state using the alphbate, right? I guess I'm asking since I live in a small town and wont have as many photo opps can it be a picture of local businesses if the name is the letter needed? love the new challenge!!
September 25th, 2010
I'm just doing anything related to my local area (Yorkshire, UK) or failing that Britain as a whole, and switching between actual places and things like traditions or whatnot (eg afternoon tea). I'm also fully expecting to have gaps where I can't find the time or opportunity to get something on a certain day.
As Annie says we can make our own rules. Hope to see your pictures soon!
September 25th, 2010
@rich57--thank you for your reply!! :)
September 25th, 2010
I am doing the same thing as Richard. I am getting shots in and around Sacramento or looking at California as a whole. =)
September 25th, 2010
@indiannie_jones I'm also going to tag my submissions with "home_a_z" so that they can all be found in one spot. Feel free to add that tag if you so wise. I will have some that might not fit the "home_#" so I thought that the a-z tag might work (not used by anyone else at this time. Tags can be changed if necessary.
September 25th, 2010
so when did this officially start? What letter are we on?
September 25th, 2010
@etiep I think this was Vanya and Annie's idea but the way I see it, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that we've started but we're not on any particular letter. Its more a case of doing it your own way and basically sharing the challenge and your pictures with other 365ers. The only rule I'm imposing on myself is to post my pictures in alphabetical order but I'm not going to tie myself down to having to do one every day. So I'd say if you're up for it get cracking with your A and post it whenever you're ready. If we follow JAs idea of tagging home_a_z as well as each individual letter then we'll all be able keep with each other. At least I think that's right! Good luck anyway and look forward to seeing your pictures.
September 25th, 2010
@etiep

Some of us started a few days back, but you can easily start when you're ready :) there's no timeline... it's easier to keep it fun this way :)

@byrdlip
Great idea! I'll be sure to check out the tag for your shots :)
September 25th, 2010
Richard is exactly right - we've started but we're not on a specific letter. My next is C and so is his, but Peter, for instance, posted his C last night so his next one (I assume) will be a D
September 26th, 2010
This is a great challenge. I am up for it. Looking, looking.
September 26th, 2010
AKK - I'm late! That's what I get for not checking in on discussions. I was just thinking about a new ABC project since I have been very uninspired lately.

THANKS!
September 26th, 2010
i think tthat this is such a GREAT CHALLENGE..... wish I could join it but it will prove to be a bit TRICKY, as am an American (from the Bay Area) - living between Taiwan and the Philippines....
September 26th, 2010
@rudit You could still do it! There are no rules saying you can't photograph several places... hey, wherever the wind takes you, right?

:D
September 26th, 2010
Yayyyyy I got my A :) I'l upload it a bit later but was so chuffed that I needed to share :)
September 26th, 2010
@vanya You're pulling a Steve on me! *waits on edge of seat*

:D hoorah
September 26th, 2010
@indiannie_jones - aaah okie dokie... gotcha..... now will give it some serious thought and plan my attack... so to speak... Thanks Annie!!!
September 26th, 2010
@rudit :D
September 27th, 2010
@indiannie_jones Well its done and I had so much fun doing this one and it was a huge learning curve on night time photography. Looking forward to some more and tomorrow is B :)
I also need to catch up viewing everyone else's but from what Ive seen it looks really great :)
September 27th, 2010
great idea and agree with @Louise & Ken re putting in the info where they are, not just the item, suburb, region but also state [and country] ... I for one am not too familiar with places in the US but a keen student.
September 27th, 2010
CRAP-am I doing this wrong? For some reason, I took it to mean, your state....so I started Michigan.....should it have been for the whole USA country?? Or just my state.....
September 27th, 2010
@deesdiscoveries Haha, nooo, you're not doing anything wrong at all! I went with the country idea because I live on a teeny island - but state is just fine. As is town or suburb or province or whatever else applies :)

September 27th, 2010
@indiannie_jones:
This is a wonderful challenge - and I am in and involved! I've decided to take it quite literally, and will have pictures of suburbs or streets in my hometown, following the A-Z. Let the games begin!
September 27th, 2010
@eleanor Hoorah :D I'll be sure to check them out
September 27th, 2010
@indiannie_jones This was an awesome idea! I have started, and really, can't wait to get them all done!!! Share some history of my awesome state! Great idea!
September 27th, 2010
@deesdiscoveries All credit goes to Vanya :) I just made the thread.
It's a fun challenge :D we already have loads of shots tagged.
September 27th, 2010
I am just getting to this project. I love the idea. I made my first photo yesterday. I am going to do my neighborhood. I heard something on the radio about a neighborhood in a big city being 72 blocks square. The town I live in is much smaller than that, so I am going to document life in small town Iowa.
September 27th, 2010
Ok, I like the idea of tagging with both "home_a_z" and "home_a,b,c, ...z".
September 27th, 2010
I think I'll start doing this when I move into uni this week, since that'll be my new home for the time being. I'm looking forward to the challenge. :D
October 1st, 2010
@indiannie_jones The credit is yours my dear as you got it off the ground, I just helped with ideas which I am quite good at but too lazy for anything else ;)
Im so enjoying looking at all the home challenges and still have a few more to look at. I got my joined b and c uploaded today hoorrayyyyy! now onto D :)
October 3rd, 2010
I've just posted my "A" photo. It'll be hard to get one for every letter but I'm definitely going to try :-)
October 3rd, 2010
@amz87 :D
October 4th, 2010
@indiannie_jones Away we go an racing! This is really fun and has re-ignited an interest in 365 for me. *thank you*!
October 4th, 2010
@eleanor Happy to hear it! :D
October 6th, 2010
So how is it coming along?
October 7th, 2010
I'm slowly getting into this 365 thing and decided to try the A-Z challenge. I've started with A is for Archives. Most of the letters shouldn't be hard for the metro DC area...except X. I'm not sure on that one.
October 8th, 2010
I've gotten all the way to C and now i'm stuck lol. I had the perfect opportunity to get a shot of a Cockatoo yesterday but didn't have my camera. I have plans for some letters further on but need to get to them first! :-p
October 8th, 2010
@amz87 I got to E before I actually became stupidly frustrated. Then at K I stopped :/ but I've since uploaded six days worth of older shots to fill the slots and get me up to date, so hopefully tomorrow I can get my Q :)
October 13th, 2010
I'm game to try this...however, I can come up with a photo for just about every letter except A...so I guess once I figure that out, I'll be good to go.
October 15th, 2010
I saw other people doing this, thought it was a great idea. So I'm a late starter.
October 18th, 2010
I saw one of my followers doing this, and thought it added another level to the 365 Project. I am now at the letter N.
October 19th, 2010
N is tomorrow for me. :-) I already have an idea of what I want to take for it...
October 20th, 2010
Wow I might have to give this one a go :)
October 26th, 2010
Phew - what a marathon but I'VE DONE IT. ALL 26! I'd done the 1-10 challenge back in April, but had no idea of the stamina required to get through the whole alphabet. Thanks @indiannie_jones for getting me on track. It's been a great way of shaking me out of some same 'old pictures' I was taking.
October 26th, 2010
@eleanor Congrats! :D
I'm going to check out your entire challenge sooooon
